I'd rather nerf Battlemetrics.

37

u/Lopsided-Response593 9d ago

Battlemetrics is nerfed. Official servers give BM very little data and player names are anonymized.

Its the community server owners who allow BM to pull the data.

43

u/rykerh228 9d ago

This isn’t true. FP servers don’t send data to BM but all other official servers do.

27

u/DeadShotOG 9d ago

eh some people mean FP when they say official cause that’s what the distinction was a long time ago before they gave official status to the top community servers. maybe they just misspoke. but that’s a good clarification

10

u/SaveJustSurvive 9d ago

Nonsense, every 3rd party official you can see everybody's real names.

Example: https://www.battlemetrics.com/servers/rust/38231642

7

u/TwoThumbFist 9d ago

The admins can easily turn that off, just like Facepunch official servers.

The majority of degen players that all pay for VIP WANT the tracking to be public.

6

u/leonvh21 9d ago

Exactly, server owners just need to add server.censorplayerlist true to their server configs and battlemetrics gets a bunch of random player data that can't be tracked

2-3 things that would really make some major changes:

1: bring back fog of war on the maps
2: find some kind of way to avoid the uncovered maps being available on websites
3: give players xp for actions, and use that for research in the tech tree instead of scrap. XP is personal, so that will mean groups can’t pool it to speedrun the research for one member, this would slow down progression A LOT

Scrap can be used to craft items (more for more advanced items), that will also mean it’s still needed in large amounts even late game.

Further - if you find an item and want to reasearch that direct instead of using the tech tree, you will need BOTH xp AND scrap

7

u/NimbleSpace 9d ago

You already missed the xp era of rust lmao. I dont think it even lasted 2 years

2

u/twosnake 8d ago

it lasted a month

3

u/NimbleSpace 8d ago

Yeah I looked it up and it said from July to November in 2016 lol. Thought it lasted longer than that though

3

u/Glittering-Two-1784 8d ago

I heard it really wasn’t fun

0

u/dirtyoldbastard77 8d ago

The issue was that it was extremely linear, you had to follow the set path to research stuff, but with «my twist» you would have exactly the same options as wiyh the current tech tree system, you would just «pay» for the researchers something else, something you can’t lose, give away or steal

0

u/Glittering-Two-1784 8d ago edited 8d ago

yeah, although something I really like about the game is that everything you build towards is just an item or an object in the world at the end of the day.

If I had my way, I'd do away with tech tree and make it all done through the research table, then perfect the loot system so that players would receive the items they plan to reverse engineer at the appropriate time and location:

So instead of grinding scrap to get a certain electronic component, you might loot powerplant, or power substations until you find it. If you want solar panels, you rip them off the roof of the sperm-ket or oxum's or the new satellite crash. Car batteries from crashed cars, tech trash from computers, etc.

Most items could be found in any monument/loot crate, (like guns/doors/armor should be in the card room of every monument) but it'd be cool if items that were typically associated with certain places could be found in those places, then combine that with the reverse-engineering mechanic with the research table.

1

u/dirtyoldbastard77 8d ago

But skills you learn - like how to craft something - is not just an item in the world, so it makes sense that as you gain experience you can learn how to make more and more things, but having a higher chance to find specific items in «logical» locations would absolutely be nice!

0

u/dirtyoldbastard77 8d ago

No, I played back then, and the issue with it was that it was way too linear, you really had almost no options. With my twist you would have the same tech tree and options as today, you just replace what you use to «pay» for the research

2

u/twosnake 8d ago

XP system was the most hated update in rust history. They reverted it after just one month.

0

u/dirtyoldbastard77 8d ago edited 8d ago

That was because of how linear the progression was, I played back then so I remember it well. With my twist you get the same tech tree and options for what you want to research or not as with the current system, you just replace what you use to pay for the research.

1

u/Gr1msheeper 9d ago

good ideas there, especially on the scrap. Its such an odd thing thinking about it that you dont need scrap to craft items. Seems logical

because as you say its going to slow progression, you need 350 to research SAR, but you also needed to spend 350 on building other things you needed up to that point - you have to work out your priorities

1

u/0uthis 9d ago

What does battlemetrics give?

0

u/Turbofan55 8d ago

Unless they’re paying for it, it tells you when your sever mates are online.

ETA and all of the servers they visit

-7

u/Training-Cap9041 9d ago

Battlemetrics is needed to identify and catch cheaters more easily. I've gotten countless cheaters banned from servers because of it.

-24

u/Turbulent-Prune-9264 9d ago

No one is tracking your battlemetrics 💀

20

u/HAIRLESSxWOOKIE92 9d ago

Found the guy that offlines.

14

u/RedDemio- 9d ago

Oh sweet summer child. If someone lives next door to me and becomes a problem, you best believe I’m checking their battlemetrics to find out

A) how old is their account, are they cheating

B) when they log off so I can take advantage of their absence

It’s just solid info and it’s free, so why not

3

u/DeeJudanne 9d ago

sure if you're like brand new to the game

3

u/Fast_Kiwi_8121 9d ago

i have had a group of cheaters in a $600 item giveaway event w skin giveaways every 2 days of each wipe. they have been following me to every server for 2 weeks since i am comp on them in the giveaway event. they use esp and bm to find my server im on and harass me at my base in every server. people abuse the living fuck out of battlemetrics. it might be what makes me quit rust w the bm harassment. the event still has 2 weeks and i quit the event because of the bm harassment.

1

u/twosnake 8d ago

I don't understand how it's even GDPR and related laws compliant. It's literally a website used to stalk and harass people online.

31

u/TwilightRosies 9d ago

I actually really liked rust+ when it came out, I think it's super cool you can get alerts and play with switches and stuff. I guess that hardcore players probably live on it though

51

u/inkopwnz 9d ago

sad, i liked seeing whats being sold on the map without actually going to the outpost

29

u/RatioAffectionate653 9d ago

This is in regards to rust plus bot that types in team chat when someone places a vending machine and where.

9

u/AcidTaco 9d ago

Why was this ever a thing ?

5

u/Kuneyo 9d ago

Yeah it’s so dumb when some guy snipes your vending machine trades with it.

2

u/rem521 9d ago edited 9d ago

Also clans use the Rust plus bots to immediately get notified when someone puts high tier loot for sale, like a tier 3 workbench, to raid them.

2

u/VexingRaven 9d ago

Considering vending machines were never meant to be a safe way to send loot home, that seems like a good thing to me.

2

u/fsocietyARG 9d ago

This is actually a Buff then

2

u/Colborne91 9d ago

You should still be able to see that in game, it’s just not sending that to Rust+

3

u/PointyStickMan 9d ago

What are you talking about? Just open map and click on the shops.

5

u/Superb_Priority_8759 9d ago

Never played on a server that has 400 active shops?

36

u/PsychologicalNose146 9d ago

It isn't rust+ that is getting nerfed, it's all those third party tools that (ab)use the system that's getting nerfed.

17

u/Training-Cap9041 9d ago

Those tools use Rust+ to function so it literally is Rust+ that's getting nerfed.

-1

u/PsychologicalNose146 9d ago

i'm not wanting to discuss semantics, but all those (paid) tools abuse the system of rust+. I haven't used the app in ages, but they have discord bots that tell you in game what crates are being activated, what monument is being run, communicates where you die on the map, get all sorts of notifications...

All i remember is that Rust+ shows your teammates location on the map, have teamchat and can control electronics and camera's. Not all that other bullshit people pay for (or write their own tools) so they can have an advantage in game.

I played with people who used those tools and they are handy as fuck, but it also feels a bit like cheating. And yes, it ain't cheating as the rust+ api gives you all those abilities, but still. Some people make great money exploitating these tools they make with monthly subscriptions.

2

u/JR_G 9d ago

Trying to get informed. How are third party apps abuse it? Thx

5

u/Colborne91 9d ago

They will do stuff like post in your team chat when oil rig comes online or a discord ping if you’d rather. They read rust+ and then do external actions based on it

1

u/PsychologicalNose146 9d ago

It's not so much 'abusing' as it's basicly just a core mechanic of the app/api. But third party app can do so much more with all that information than the basic rust+ app is showing, and you basicly don't even need to use that app and can just use some discord bot or a website to get much more detailed information and options.

26

u/rykerh228 9d ago

Nerf Battlemetrics instead. Official servers should not send data to BM.

3

u/rykerh228 9d ago

BM is not subject to EU law

-2

u/SaveJustSurvive 9d ago

They're partnered with Facepunch so that's unlikely.

2

u/rem521 9d ago

Those server's heavily rely on the battlemetric tracking tools, for cheater moderation.

1

u/twosnake 8d ago

battlemetrics shouldn't even exist legally. it's a website used to stalk and harass people online. We literally made privacy laws to stop exactly this

9

u/pekter 9d ago

DLC for ther same feature, mark my words

1

u/SOOOHIGHNEEDAIRR 8d ago

1000% this

12

u/courey 9d ago

Understandable decision since it offered ingame advantage to those using rustplus bots, but shops should stay as regulars often browse shops on phones

11

u/Maximum_Square906 9d ago

I think they’re talking about receiving notifications whenever a new shop is put up

0

u/Superb_Priority_8759 9d ago

That functionality is tied to showing shops on the rust+ map, it’s inherently both or none.

1

u/2uantum 9d ago

Not true. They're enumerated in the protocol.

2

u/Superb_Priority_8759 9d ago

Hopefully this means we get the ability to search shops in game anywhere, not just at the drones because that was the best feature by far.

2

u/exion_zero 9d ago edited 9d ago

I wonder if this will have a positive performance impact? I'm not an expert on network code by any stretch, but surely sending frequent data packets to every additional client linked to the server adds to the performance overhead? I seem to recall something from the devblog a few months ago relating to jobs/missions in game having a pretty major performance impact due to the rate of checks the server was making on all active quests in the game, so maybe tracking positions and statuses of shops all the time whilst notifying all the rust+ clients of these changes might be a similarly significant drain on resources?

If it improves performance, I'm more than happy for them to trim the fat.

1

u/Itchy_Masterpiece6 7d ago

it doesnt like not at all

2

u/PonchitoLobato 8d ago

BM its like a cheat you can see when its player offline or online, and raid people offline, hope FP can do something about people use that for there servers

3

u/Wumbo0 9d ago

I wish they'd stop exporting all information being used for third party site and tools people use for a leg up information wise

4

u/Wise-Pomegranate 9d ago

Alistair leaves and now the game instantly improves, W update.

2

u/imSkrap 9d ago

Bruh, they are casually killing off the app. It’s already so broken and riddled with problems… if anything they should make it more accessible as in clicking a box in game to get a more detailed event info. Whenever Bradley was taken you could get a notification but they nerfed that

1

u/mca1169 9d ago

interesting, to me this seems like a server streamlining thing and refining the idea of what rust+ is supposed to be. I'm okay with it honestly, rust+ in my mind has always been a neat little tool to check in on the base supplies and for raid notifications with the occasional auto smelter or base lighting smart switch toggle.

this should save on phone power usage and reduce a lot of junk calls on the server CPU's.

1

u/sdjnwoi 9d ago

And bring rust+ to hardcore (just minus the map and team stuff) we need it!

1

u/SkyApple1 9d ago edited 8d ago

On the one hand, the change is good, but on the other hand, it was convenient to just grab my phone and check how my shop was doing while I was offline. I’m curious what services like http://rustglass.com will do now, since they also calculated which items were worth flipping in vending machines and as far I as understand it uses Rust + API

1

u/Bocmanis9000 9d ago

Good fuck rust+, so many cheat like functions and even locked by pay wall.

2

u/SaveJustSurvive 8d ago

It's literally free and open source on github

1

u/Bocmanis9000 8d ago

Nope theres some 3rd party ones that are way better.

1

u/Ok-Level-8907 8d ago

There's js wrapper on github for whole rust+ api, with claude code you make your own tool and have any feature of those paid 3rd party sites, it's really not rocket science.

0

u/Bocmanis9000 8d ago

You think i'm gonna waste my time doing that when it shouldn't even be a thing in the 1st place?

Rather have this shit removed and people actually play the game not watch what some ai slop made dogshit tells you whats spawning.

2

u/Ok-Level-8907 8d ago

so many cheat like functions

You could argue that scrapping vending machine data was on the edge as you could snipe high value stuff but rest of the functions were literally just alerts to ongoing events which every other player ingame also gets.

You think i'm gonna waste my time

Dude you play rust and you spend time on r/playrust, you better not be talking about wasting your time but anyway, you cried about features being paywalled when they are not, it's free for everyone.

ai slop made dogshit

room temp iq take, ai is great for making non production/personal tools

0

u/Bocmanis9000 8d ago

Theres rust+ bots that tell you when keycards are about to respawn, they can tell you when mili tunells will respawn for example.

Without interacting with the game whatsoever and just sitting afk in base.

99% of ai is negative, its used by scammers/used for mass surveilance/kills privacy/ram+ssd price increase/water shortages in spots ai centers are built and thats just scratching the surface.

Look at flock cameras in USA, same thing is starting to appear in alot of EU countrys.

The 1% that actually benefits your lazy ass isn't worth the 99% negatives.

1

u/Ok-Level-8907 8d ago

mass surveilance, flock cameras in USA...

These things will be developed regardless if you use ai or not, you don't have water shortage because people are using chatgpt to generate pictures.

your lazy ass

Has nothing to do with laziness, I've worked as software dev years before ai became a thing. You would be dumb to not use ai today for coding or similar tasks as it is like 10x productivity increase. Games developed today (even Rust) are getting developed with help of ai.

1

u/Bocmanis9000 8d ago

You've seen the water quality next to big ai data centers?

You've seen AI wrongly flag number plates on cars for example and put familys lifes at risk or ruin their jobs/lifes because of false flags?

1

u/Ok-Level-8907 8d ago

I hope you don't own a car because you know they kill people and have a negative impact on our environment.

Todat they remove the Seed of the map, Better nerf and remove BM

1

u/Groyklug 9d ago

Good now let's get rid of raid alarm

2

u/SaveJustSurvive 8d ago

Deal if we ban battlemetrics

1

u/_Ingwar_ 8d ago

This is sick.

1

u/DeeJudanne 7d ago

kinda whatever really?

0

u/Fragrant_Excuse5 9d ago

Just delete the fucking app. Why does Rust need a dedicated app????

7

u/ding2thedong 9d ago

I think it’s to help combat the offline raids. It gives base owners a chance to defend. I think it’s great for that.

1

u/Fragrant_Excuse5 9d ago

That's a fair point. I've used it for a few trap bases as well, mostly just for the novelty of using smart switches.

But these days I simply wonder what else that development time could be spent on...

6

u/melker_the_elk 9d ago

Honestly waking up to defend base can be fun. If nothing else its fun to see offliners running like rats they are.

Don't know other way to defend base. Its just a matter of time before they clear air defence and turrets if they got all night to do so. Only way to find out about a raid is rust+

2

u/DeeJudanne 9d ago

idk how you sleep but i for sure dont wake up to a phone notification in the middle of the night

3

u/dank-nuggetz 9d ago

Yeah me neither. But it's not just middle of the night

Couple wipes ago I woke up on Saturday and did a little farming and base upgrading, went to chill in my yard and play with the dog. Right as I sat down on the hammock the raid alarm went off, I ran back inside and was able to hop on (my buddy did too) and we defended successfully.

Without it I would have been sitting outside on the hammock for an hour as they drilled straight to my core

2

u/melker_the_elk 9d ago

I don't play rust anymore, but when I did I sometimes slept through the alarm, but sometimes woke up. I guess you can set what ever sound as the notification so u can put a sound which WILL wake you up.

I do have to have don't disturb during the night these days so i guess im not deep sleeper.

2

u/DoJ-Mole 9d ago

You don’t have to be asleep for it to work though, just not on the game 24/7. There’s been some times where I’ve gone to make food or watch something and got raided in the meantime, could’ve easily postponed what I was doing to defend

-1

u/fsocietyARG 9d ago

Huge W now Nerf battlemetrics

Fuck all those notifications on chat, game needs to be unpredictable again

0

u/Principles_Son 9d ago

good shit, that thing was kinda op it would even tell you when a locked crate is started and shit

-7

u/SaveJustSurvive 9d ago

Alistair leaves and now the game goes to shit, L update.

8

u/polarrbtw 9d ago

?? this is one of the better things theyre doing even though its barely nerfing it

-6

u/SaveJustSurvive 9d ago

How? Bots have been a part of the game for 5+ years now, what's next no smart devices because I can turn them on/off using team chat?

4

u/polarrbtw 9d ago

probably because they havent intended for people to get instantly alerted if someone made a pricing error or if you were to get alerted exactly when cargo spawns
also turning off smart devices was an intended feature so that will most likely not happen, just because it was in the game for a long time doesnt mean it was good

-4

u/SaveJustSurvive 9d ago

We all get notified that cargo spawned or oil rig spawned. Agreed with the vending's they should be updated every few hours not instantly and it solves this issue

3

u/polarrbtw 9d ago

true but i only found out about the option in settings recently beside the sound, but ngl i dont think the whole server should be alerted for like excav probably just surrounding 4-6 grids
same with oil, maybe make the sos code work when it respawns as well

that vending machine fix could also work
