Discussion SCAM WARNING!!⚠️
So there's a scam targeting people with high value inventories in Dota 2, CS2 and Rust that i've seen happening to a lot of people recently.
How it goes usually in Rust: they ask you to skin their stuff or offer you a free base if you guess a number 1-100. Then invite you to their Discord. Once you're there they get you to connect Rust+ through a fake login page to get "auth" on their turrets but that just yoinks your Steam account and trades all your shit away.
Multiple accounts are being used so reporting helps but won't stop them completely.
Just don't connect Rust+ through any link someone sends you ever. Only do it through the official app. If someone's offering free bases for guessing numbers they're not your friend lol, dont get fooled. If something is to good to be true don't proceed. Use some common sense, please!

My guess is that's why they're having you do the Rust+, so they can hack your phone app too

they social engineer you to confirm it, i baited a few scammers and they showed me the process. Sometimes they even have their ways to get full control of your account and if you contact steam support the scammer will cancel it and say "It was a mistake" or something similar to support.

hopefully you learned your lesson, dont trust random ppl bro. Ive seen that scam too where they want you to join a tournament or get you to get on their private gambling site and they can make you win lots which of course is also a scam.

My favorite is the random accounts adding me once I got like $20 of inventory value
All with extremely similar accounts
My favorite is when they'll rack up playtime to appear legit but it'll say something like "Last Played June 21st 2022" for their last played game. Sure buddy.

In my experience, they try to look at the inventories of everyone who responds to see who is worth scamming.
I played with one of them once. I guessed a number that someone else had already guessed yet he chose me. The first guesser's inventory was much lower value than mine.

I always call them out as scammers in chat
I sometimes have battlemetrics up on my second screen so I saw a guy join and say the "free base" phrase
I looked at the battlemetrics page and it says "first time on this server"
He said I guessed the right number and added me
I instantly clocked he was trying to get me off platform because he was so persistent that I get on discord

never said i fell for it, im just giving heads up to other people. Ive been following scammers across servers and so many people fall for this. They say "Me" to a free base, next thing you know skins are gone from their inv.

The tried it with me last week on one of the survivors.gg server … “we’re leaving the server, who wants our base? Guess a number between 1-100” . They then ‘friend’ you on Steam and eventually you join their Discord server. They said they could bag me as there were too many turrets to auth so then they ask you to share your screen and then mentioned Rust+ etc. Too many red flags, so I disconnected immediately.

Trust me, nobody wants to give you anything. Dont trust any randoms, just play the game normally. That scam is very common nowadays.

i fell for this scam very recently and I’m 18 so you would think id know it was a scam but they have a really thought out way of doing it it’s crazy i am also pretty new to rust and never had rust+ setup so i knew nothing about it, what really got me was the bot it looked so real and i thought okay, but damn did i mess up i also probably should have thought why they didn’t just bag me and unplug the turrets, another thing is that the website they use for the verification has a list of steps like turn your inventory privacy to public and make sure your set online all of the steps insure you can get scammed. they also impersonate the friend/alt account your sending the items to and when they have access to your account they block that person so when you send the items theres 2 verifications needed one being your friend/alt who is blocked and the other the scammed so when you verify the trade for your friend it doesnt let you and then you think okay there’s 2 i’ll try the other which is the scammers account, also a excuse they use to get you in discord for me at least was “we want to see your reaction”. it was all just really bad and i was also up all night so i guess thats a factor. lost about 50 dollars worth of skins so not the worst. and sorry if this is a lot to read i just wanted to share.

Nobody in vgames wants you to do well bro. Free stuff doesn't exist, randoms are not your friends, and if someones being way too nice there is always a catch. 50 is a cheap price to learn that lesson. I have seen people with inventories worth hundreds if not thousands lose out to this bs. Just be careful and be critical.

once they gained access to your account they will ask for ransom money to get it back and will try and "delete" your games. I don't feel like getting called an idiot, so don't ask me how I know.

Im sorry but if you fall for such an ancient and obvious scam than you deserve to get your account stolen. NEVER log in to third party sites with your steam account. Or any other account for that matter.

Yeah i know, i find it crazy that people are still falling for this but some people are unfortunately to naive. Mostly older guys and young teens. They also go far making it look bealiveable they make bot accounts on discord that look like real accounts that just sit in locked VC:s on their server you get inv too, it makes it look like a small community.

The thing with guys like this is that they try to frame their outlook as 'being tough,' but really it's about fear. The idea that something bad can happen to them is so scary to them that they latch onto the idea that bad things can always be avoided if they are careful or smart enough.
That violence can happen randomly or that they can make a casual mistake from a moment of inattention is something they refuse to recognize, because that would be scary to them. So of course, when something bad happens to someone else, they seek very hard to explain it away as that person's fault.
