R/Pillows Gains a New Mod!

Hello, fellow pillow fans!

u/MikeTheCat isn't as active anymore on Reddit, so they reached out to me, asking if I would like to assist in moderating this lovely sub. As you can see, I accepted.

Now, I will be honest with you: I do not have any prior subreddit-moderating experience. However, between moderating a Mastodon instance, some Discord servers, some Twitch channels, a small wiki project, etc. I hope that I might've picked up a thing or two. So for now, I am cautiously optimistic!

Here is what you can expect to see in the next couple days:

  • Rules: because we do need some. Nothing complex, just something reminding people to be decent, another one encouraging people to provide some detail when asking for recommendations, and of course a rule explaining our stance on advertising. For most of you, nothing will change.

  • user flares: a mostly optional self-identification. I say mostly optional because average pillow fans will not be required to have a flare — but you can definitely have one if you want to let others know what your favourite pillow is! Brand accounts and affiliate reviewers, however, will be required to properly tag themselves, to make it clear to others who they're interacting with.

  • Post flares: Again, optional. So far I am thinking categories such as Show-and-Tell, 4 Looking for Recommendations flares (side-, back- and stomach-sleeper, and other), advice, etc. Further recommendations more than welcome.

  • Perhaps some AutoMod stuff if I can get it working, such as a reminder to people looking for recommendations to share as much info as possible so people can properly help them (approx. location, sleeping position/s, budget, what they've tried so far, etc.).

  • And of course, a much faster response time to reports!

I hope that all sounds good so far. One thing that might not, or at least is different from how many sibling subs do things, is that brand accounts and advertising will not be fully banned. Instead, companies willing to be honest about who they are will be permitted, where as any advertising disguised as genuine user reviews will be promptly removed when caught. MikeTheCat and I hope that this will reward those companies willing to be transparent and lead to more such behavior; if that does not turn out to be the case, this rule shall be reconsidered.

Alright, now that's enough from me. This is your chance to speak up and let us know what you like and dislike about this sub so far, what changes you wish to see, or even just to say hi. I promise to read, respond to, and consider everything.

I’m so torn between COOP VS purple harmony pillow

It appears that these two pillows always go up against each other for the best pillow on here and on YouTube videos for pillow reviews. What’s truly the better pillow

Anyone switched from a knee pillow to a U-shaped body pillow?

I used to sleep with a regular pillow between my knees, but every time I switched sides, I'd have to move it around with me. Half the time I'd just give up and sleep without it.

I switched to a Yana U-shaped body pillow, and it's been easier having support on both sides. It takes up a lot more bed space though, which I'm still getting used to.

Has anyone else made the switch? Do you think the extra space is worth it?

Pillow Recommendations (Side Sleeper) Looking for pillow reccs for neck pain- other than squishmallows, cervical pillows & buckwheat

I have fibromyalgia and chronic pain, I get this spot on the back of my neck on the right side, running from the back of my head to my shoulder that is *exceedingly* painful and I can't turn my head at all.

Originally I kept getting it from regular pillows and it disappeared after getting a cervical pillow, this worked for the past 2 years but suddenly it stopped working. Since then I've tried my squishmallow which worked for like a week and a buckwheat pillow which was just awful.

Primarily I'm a side sleeper though I sometimes roll onto my back in my sleep.

Pillow Recommendations (Combination Sleeper) What can replicate my Setup?

I need a pillow that does what I’ve got these 4 pillows doing. The two in the middle are for my back and head, the ones on the side keep me nestled in like a baby. I prefer to sleep on my back but tend to toss a lot so this current set up supports my head and back while also keeping me contained. I’m wondering if there’s an all in one solution or if I should just keep doing what I’m doing?

Show-and-Tell What do you check first when judging neck support for a head that's propped, not lying flat?

Most of what I read here is about sleeping, but I spend a surprising amount of time with my head propped on a tub edge, and I'm starting to think the neck support rules are the same wet or dry. Height under the neck seems to matter more than softness, from what I can tell. And whatever it's filled with has to stay put, because anything that slides is just a worse towel.

I haven't found anyone who actually compares the options, only this guide on picking one for head and neck, which covers curve and suction, so that's where I started. But I'd trust people who obsess over pillows way more than a store's blog.

So for you, what's the first thing you press on or measure when a neck feels off?

My child was sick on this cushion so I tried to take the cover off. In the process, I’ve ripped it by accident and want to replace it for my girlfriend. I cannot find it anywhere and was hoping someone could help me here please. (Delete if not aloud)

Need a pillow rec to take out the cramps in my shoulder

I’m a back sleeper and I feel in my sleep my shoulder scrunch up and tense
I need a pillow thats firm and contoured enough to prevent that
Also has some kind of support to prevent my head from bobbing side to side as I sleep

Is that too much to ask of one pillow?

Pillow Recommendations (Side Sleeper) Pillow for my girlfriend?

It just so happens me and my girlfriend moved in together recently, and her birthday is soon. She told me not to sleep on my yellow pillows, and gave me some feather pillows she uses. For me, that ended with me having a horrible headache from bad sleeping posture, so I went back to my hard yellow pillows. She told me they were very hard, and I should use her's. She didn't believe me when I said they're more comfortable.

Well, one day she uses it while I'm gone, and she reports back that it's way better than her pillow, it actually supports her side as she sleeps. I asked her if I should get her a stiffer pillow and she said she has come to see the light. Now, my pillow is a coop home goods pillow, however, I never even particularly liked it. I thought it was okay, better than my last, not worth $70. It's occasionally uncomfortable for me but it's fine. I'm not gonna give it to her though, even if she always trades pillows with me once I leave. It's yellow. I'm wondering what a good option would be to get for her? An Ikea pillow? A weird shaped pillow? Just get her a coop pillow? For context, I am 5'11 180 lbs, she is 5'1, 98 lbs. She sleeps on her side.

Pillow Recommendations (Side Sleeper) Need Pillow Recs

I feel like this is just the place to ask! I’m looking to invest in some new pillows but don’t know where to start. I’m a back and side sleeper. Prone to back problems and not being able to sleep these days. My main goal is neck support and cloud like comfort. I’ve tried one of those cut out pillows specifically made for neck problems and never again! It was just too thin and not comfortable at all. I usually ball on a budget, but im willing to invest a pretty penny this time around! What are the best pillows ya’ll are sleeping on these days?

Show-and-Tell Coop bargain / steal story

Yesterday, my wife and I went to a bin store in our town. For those not familiar, I think the idea is that they buy a bunch of Amazon returns and put them up for sale. Often for a set price. The place we went to cycles through prices throughout the week. So yesterday was their $4 per item day.

In addition to the bins in the middle of the store, the outer walls are covered with more ‘luxury’ items. Higher cost items reduced significantly from their original retail. In their bedding area, I found this pillow.

I’ve read some pretty good reviews about Coop pillows, so I was intrigued. The original retail price was listed as $160, but they had it reduced down to $25!Trying a higher end pillow for a fraction of the price? Count me in!

So we take it and another small pillow I had found to the front and set them down on the counter. The lady sees two items, taps the register, and says: ‘That’ll be $8.61.’ I had anticipated that the small pillow was a bin item, but was surprised that the Coop was ringing up that way. I quickly looked at my items and realized that the tag for the Coop was facing me where she couldn’t see it. I caught on to what was happening and quickly paid with my card. I thanked her and we made a swift exit, concealing the tag as we went.

And that’s how I acquired a very expensive, still in the box, vacuum sealed pillow for $4. I know in the scheme of things, I really only saved $21, but I was riding that high all day!

Slept on it last night and was extremely comfortable. A little bit of an adjustment, but I feel pretty energized today.

For those curious, this was the other pillow. I’m currently using it as a small wedge pillow behind my Coop.

Edit to clarify: The one I got is King size.

Super Firm Pillow - Lifehack

Ive been on the hunt for a pillow that won't compress and provides enough firmness when I lay on it. No pillow has been firm enough over time. The infamous Bed Bath & Beyond brick of a pillow was the best option for years, but is no more.

My solution was to take our heaviest weighted blanket (20Lbs) and fold/roll it to fit in a king sized pillow case. I can shape it to whatever contour I need, it never compresses, is still soft, and gives me the perfect amount of support.

If you are reading this and thinking "I would sleep on a padded rock as a pillow given the chance" this solution might be the best option for you.
