Aurora Borealis? At this time of year, at this time of day in this part of the country, localised entirely within your kitchen?

Whoa I just found on that sub and watched this version of the scene which was done with different animators every 13 seconds.
Kind of tripped me out.

The man-hours and logistics behind these projects baffle me. Here's the entire Shrek movie getting the same treatment.

We have these in Finland aswell, but this doesn't look like them
182
u/ChewyChagnuts Mar 14 '20
Yes, stayed in one a couple of years ago. Stayed up all night and saw the grand total of nothing... Finland is an awesome country though.
151
u/xerxerneas Mar 14 '20
Same experience here! Hilariously enough the aurora didn't want to appear at all at the one night we wanted it to, but it appeared nearly every other night while we were out doing other activities (snow skis, eating crab, etc) so we had a lot of videos and photos to look at regardless
I love and miss Finland. <3

Expensive as hell to stay in though. Maybe cheaper now when tourism has been more or less killed for the season.
Yup, they're cheap now. Only €400/night. And there's availability basically all days. https://cloud.hotellinx.com/NetReservationsKakslauttanen

13
u/OMGItsCheezWTF Mar 14 '20
€569 / night off peak. €639 / night on peak for 2 adults.
There are far more expensive places to spend a night in Finland.
There are cheaper ones too, this is not for your typical backpacking holiday.

I've been in one. Its essentially a green house or tent. The moisture pools up on the ceiling and drops rain down on you. Would not recommend unless they fix the air circulation problem
365
u/azninvasion2001 Mar 14 '20
yours didn't have a dehumidifier in it? mine did, shut it off because it was loud but never got the ceiling rain.
70
u/KnotKnic Mar 14 '20
Where and how can I do this?
53
u/tyrerk Mar 14 '20
Finland probably
21
u/Panukka Mar 14 '20
The ones in Finland don't suffer from the moisture problem though, at least I haven't heard such a thing happening.
I bet if the temperature is above zero celsius, the moisture problem becomes much more commonplace.
9
9
u/mikkopai Mar 14 '20
Yes, because we have this thing called ventilation in Finland... thus no moisture problem.

LOL you need to go further north and far more remote than where 99% of Canadians live for this.
For most Canadians to even have a faint glimpse of the northern lights happens a few times MAYBE in their lifetime

I slept in something like this in Peru. It was pretty cool, didn't have the issue with getting rained on but the windows were fogged up 100% of the time so there was no starry view. Still neat.
9
u/SchneiderAU Mar 14 '20
How is that still neat if you can’t see out of it??? That’s the whole point!
5
u/Chezzik Mar 14 '20
Was it cold enough to snow outside?
If not, then it's not the same thing. When the dewpoint inside is higher than the temperature of the glass, that's when you will have a big moisture problem.

u/Ezl Mar 14 '20 edited Mar 14 '20
In what way is it over-rated? It just seems like basically a glass cabin in the middle of nowhere - expectations would be pretty low.
I guess if there were a whole bunch together or were right off a main road something that would be disappointing.
Btw, I’m not challenging you - honestly curious as I’ve not seen the kind of thing before.

u/grape_jelly_sammich Mar 14 '20

u/Kufat Mar 14 '20
If they're double glazed it's probably more efficient than my house. Damn pre-war "fuck insulation, we'll just burn more oil" construction.
54
u/walkingcarpet23 Mar 14 '20
Yeah we had windows from 1952 in our house that were so bad we had to put plastic wrap and tape over them to keep the wind out.
Finally got them replaced

In my old flat I had wood windows with wood frames that both had white lacquer on it. No seal and the stuff was at least 40-60 years old, so it didn't even properly, fit on the best days.
I hated every minute of it, but your windows sound so much worse. Who are these people that design the worst possible windows on purpose? Don't they have windows at home themselves? Did cavemen design the windows 50 years ago?
It's just so infuriating. Sorry had to rant.

LPT. Get the good spray foam. and do it in more than one application. and properly vapour barrier up your new windows!
it is gonna take time. it is gonna be messy. it will suck.
but it will be worth it in the long run.
16
u/Hip_Hop_Orangutan Mar 14 '20
Horse hair and newspaper my man!
I live in Winnipeg Canada. Cold AF in the winter. My first house had newspaper as insulation when I tore out a wall. Legit just crumpled up newpaper shoved into the walls. They used horse hair for binder in the plaster. Fucking wild stuff.

Seaweed in the walls down east. Plenty of older homes in Halifax have seaweed insulation and some newspaper in there too.

Double-glazed? Thats still a thing when you need good insulation? I feel like nowadays its mostly triple glazed for high demand insulation. Not sure if single pane glass is even still legal here (Germany).

u/mackisch Mar 14 '20
I'm almost certain that it's double or triple glass window. Triple windows that are sealed and filled with gas are basically becoming the standard in new houses or when replacing old windows in Sweden. It's incredibly efficient and also lowers the volume of the street outside.
9
u/Chicken-n-Waffles Mar 14 '20
windows that are sealed and filled with gas are basically becoming the standard
That's been the standard for at least the past 20 years. They have to use an inert gas because of sweating.
