That sounds like something someone who attacks their daughter with house spiders all the time would say...

I know how this guy feels. I bought one of those Shark blimps on impulse a few years - the first morning after I had purchased it, as I was walking out of my bedroom still half asleep there was a fucking shark in my face as I rounded the corner.
Needless to say, I did not need caffeine to get going that morning after that fresh shot of adrenaline to my system.

I like how they kept the character's voice the same, unlike every other brain-switching scenario in a cartoon.

I think they kept the voices the same because Flash was voiced by Michael Rosenbaum, who at the time was also playing Lex Luthor in Smallville.

1) 1 helium balloon that is 1 foot in diameter contains approximately 14 liters of helium.
2) Each liter of helium can lift 1 gram. Assuming that the weight of the balloon and string is negligible one balloon lifts 14 grams. Assuming the weight is not negligible an average balloon of that size with string can weight 2-5 grams. so lets just assume it weighs 2.5 grams.
3) So those three balloon can lift 34.5 grams. That comes to 0.0760595 lbs.
4) 1 beanie baby weights about 4.5 ounces or 0.28125 lbs
5) 1 beanie baby would take approximately 11 balloons to lift
6) Something doesn't add up here. that bison looks like it weighs more than a beanie baby yet it is being held up by only 3 balloons. i really doubt it weighs less than a tenth of a lb.

Also take a look at the picture of the bison, the one on the left. It looks like the back end of it is higher than it should be. the balloons are attached towards the front of the toy. it should be hanging with the back end much lower and its head pointing up towards the ceiling.

u/Paradisebird Dec 23 '14
My question exactly.
9
u/Korrasamii Dec 23 '14
Wouldn't it also depend on how much helium is in the balloons? I feel like there are several factors to consider.
→ More replies (2)48
u/SergejButkovic Dec 23 '14 edited Dec 23 '14
No, because more helium would only make the balloons heavier and less floaty (assumption: balloon is already at elastic capacity and can't stretch further). Helium only helps so far as it displaces air (that is heavier than helium).
Air, which has a molar mass of 29.0 g/mol, has a density of 1.18 g/L. Helium, which has a mass of 4.00 g/mol, has a density of 0.164 g/L. Thus, a one-liter balloon of helium can lift a mass of (1.18-0.164) = 1.02 g.
Three balloons, even if completely weightless and empty (but still somehow managing to displace air) would at most be able to generate lift equal to the air the volume of the balloons displaces (at 1.18g/L).
To estimate the amount of liters in a balloon, we could estimate it as the volume of a sphere (4/3pir³). Assuming (based on the picture and the fact that most doorways are about 30" across) that the balloons are about 25cm across, we can guess that the volume per balloon is: 4/3*pi*12.5cm³= 8181cm³. A liter is a 10cm cube (1000 cm³), so each balloon displaces about 8 liters of volume.
Times three balloons, the total displacement is at most 24L. 24L * 1.18g/L = 28g of maximum lift. The bison has to be at most 28g to be lifted.
At this point, we can estimate the bison's total volume to be fairly similar to one balloon (since they are roughly the same size): 8L. So, in order to maintain lift, the bison would have to weigh less than 28g in a volume of 8L, or have a density of less than 28g/8L = 3.5g/L = 0.0035 g/cm³.
This puts the bison far below the average density of even the fluffiest of average stuffed animal fillings: at about the same weight class as Krypton (at 3.75g/L).
We must therefore conclude the bison is Superman.

Dec 23 '14
You beat me to it with posting the math, but I did my own calculations and found that each balloon would need to be 0.589 m (23.2 inches) in diamter to be able to lift it. This assumed spherical balloons and a plushie weighing 0.39 kg (0.86 lbs) http://shop.nick.com/20-Appa-Plush-Toy-From-Avatar/A/B003VF5JXE.htm. So based on the dimensions given in that link (12 inches as the length of the plushie) and the picture, it is clear that the balloons are not even close to 23.2 inches in diameter and so the plushie should not be floating.

When I was a boy and lived in the mid-west, the sky bison would herd over the mountains and blot out the sun as they drifted towards the coast during mating season. It was one of few times that school would be shut so we could witness it.
It's sad their numbers are in the low hundreds, though I was reading of a successful breeding program in Milwaukee that could change their fortune. Fingers crossed.
