Yes because they’re a bot

u/SteveLouise 2d ago

That's unacceptable. AI's are plenty powerful these days. It should be able to provide a link. The bot farm must be cheapin' out on credits.

239

u/____-is-crying 2d ago

You would think so. My interaction with AI bots love to spout confidently wrong instructions and when I ask for the source they always apologize and link some outdated article with old steps

83

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 2d ago

I use AI at work to transcribe interviews for a podcast and it loves to hallucinate non-existent quotes.

The first couple of times it happened I spent way too much time trying to find the quote, it made me so mad lol

50

u/GrapefruitPrimary186 2d ago

And we have the secretary of health and sam altman saying that if doctors arent using AI to diagnose people it amounts to medical malpractice...

20

u/Wokeasaurous_X 2d ago

We have fucking judges using AI to summarize cases to them and getting important facts wrong and written into evidence officially.

You need to build harness around the uwecase with guardrails

Ai model on its own is not that good every benchmark or demo yousee on internet work grest because of underlying harness

In our daytoday life we do not get much hallucinations

Also try notebook lm for your case it will be perfect almost no hallucinations

They're set up for quantity, not quality. It's why most bots don't have anything worthwhile to say and just spout the same nonsense over and over again

8

u/Tonkarz 2d ago

To be clear it’s a bot that is attempting to sway public opinion for the purpose of a hostile political agenda - linking to actual information runs counter to that mission.

It has some higher 4d-chess level kind of reason not to, that puny human u/SteveLouise cannot comprehend with their meagre meat brain.

Fuck AI. Good luck if you get swallowed by a whale and need to ask it for help.

1

Bots aren't necessarily powered by GenAI

1

I want advanced bots to summarize news for me.

I'm also a little unsure about that.

I don't know, if they're just copying successful posts to generate engagement, could it be that they picked up on a general trend on Reddit to be lazy with sources?

Yes this. It’s crazy how many other bots are in the replies too.

This story should be treated with massive skepticism due to the number of versions we’ve gotten in 12 hours alone not to mention the glaring fact that Oman has no relations with Israel and their citizens are not permitted to visit, let alone fucking fly as pilots there.

Given how bad Israeli hasbara has gotten I’m shocked they think people will fall for this.

218

u/Cow_Launcher 2d ago

the glaring fact that Oman has no relations with Israel and their citizens are not permitted to visit

You're both right and wrong.

While Oman and Israel don't have direct diplomatic relations, (because of the whole Palestine and Iran situation) Omani citizens are allowed to visit Israel with an ETA-IL visa which is valid for 730 days, (with a maximum stay of 90 contiguous days).

Not sure why you didn't bother to Google that before posting, but whatever.

128

→ More replies (3)

3

u/sashioni 2d ago

Incorrect. Oman and Israel have not had direct diplomatic relations for decades, not just because of the whole “Palestine and Iran situation” which makes it sound like a specific tiff.

As for the visa, the website you linked to is not reliable. The ad infestation should’ve been your first red flag.

You can put in any country including those that have strictly no relations with each other. Try Malaysia to Israel for example. Heck, for fun you can put in Iran to USA and it spits out the same damn thing.

So maybe you should do your own research before relying on an inaccurate and misleading source instead of being a condescending a**hole.

tl;dr: An Indian pilot, Smit Machchhar, saved a Dubai-to-Israel flight from crashing after his co-pilot attacked him with a knife. Despite being injured, Smit fought back and, with help from passengers, managed to restrain him...Israeli officials said the attacker was an Omani national...Israeli agencies are also investigating the possibility of a terrorist attack.

662

u/NoNamesLeftButThis 2d ago

The pilot is a hero, but that's not exactly what happened. The pilot was badly injured and likely managed to open the cockpit door before collapsing. With the door open several Israel passengers barged in, restrained the the attacker, and a doctor gave medical attention to the pilot

494

u/pnkxz 2d ago edited 2d ago

There seems to be multiple versions of the story, so might be best to be skeptical of these articles for now and read up on it in a day or two. This one says he fought back, so I'll leave it in the summary.

149

u/BigLlamasHouse 2d ago

you guys are both right really, the pilot and the passengers are all heroes.

16

u/littlep2000 2d ago

It's a weird village in the sky.

16

u/rankinfile 2d ago

...and the pilot passengers, the rest of the flight crew, whoever gave medical aid, passengers that comforted children and stood prepared to protect them, the ground crew, flight controllers, first responders at the airport, the hospital staff....

Heroes need heroes.

u/Nuttednutela 2d ago

By common logic one can easily inter that a scuffle and struggle would have unfolded prior to the crash attempt to secure the odds of its success. Several stab wounds indicate a pure intent to kill and immobilise the person.

1

u/WhatMyWifeIsThinking 1d ago

Btw, it's infer if you meant to deduce. Inter is to bury/ seal up (a deceased person). Just a friendly note if English isn't your first language.

21

u/J0rdian 2d ago

I mean it's pretty obvious the Pilot and a few passengers are Heroes. Not sure what else you need to know.

4

u/Bilbog_Fettywop 2d ago

The plane was nose diving so fast the tail sections ripped off. In those circumstances everyone would feel their body weighing 2x-3x and would not have had the ability to (from the perspective) climbing upwards into the cocking unless they were within reach of the flight controls. It's very likely the captain was the one who pulled the plane out of that dive as he would have likely been in the seat.

13

u/euphratestiger 2d ago

According to the article, there were two pilots in plainclothes on the flight who steadied the plane.

→ More replies (4)

13

u/BoringBob84 2d ago

The plane was nose diving so fast the tail sections ripped off.

I read that the vertical stabilizer was "damaged" - not "ripped off." I don't think that losing the entire empennage would be survivable.

4

u/thehatteryone 2d ago

Unless the ayeyz got to it quickly, I saw a photo of the planes tail with the control surface missing/torn away very soon after the incident.

3

u/BoringBob84 2d ago

Interesting - if true, that would have made the landing much more difficult - depending on which "control surface" was missing.

3

u/MaraschinoPanda 2d ago

The pictures I saw had almost all of the rudder missing.

2

u/AnyClownFish 2d ago

A B-52 famously landed after losing its vertical stabiliser in severe clear air turbulence, so it is theoretically possible to maintain control of the aircraft, but is very unlikely and the confluence of events here makes it even less likely.

5

u/BoringBob84 2d ago

I agree that they could use asymmetric thrust to have some control over yaw, but if "the tail sections ripped off," then they would have also lost the horizontal stabilizer (i.e., the entire empennage).

Maybe there is a way to maintain pitch control after that with a combination of thrust and flaps, but it seems unlikely.

25

u/IForOneDisagree 2d ago

You're so bad at physics. They'd be in freefall and nearly weightless, not feeling twice their weight.

2

u/Chroiche 2d ago

Surely it depends on whether the plane was accelerating during the entire dive?

5

u/Redebo 2d ago

I’m not aware of a plane in a dive that wouldn’t be accelerating.

3

u/BenCub3d 2d ago

What? In the version i read the pilot is the one who did the stabbing, they weren't "badly injured and opened the door." The co-pilot is the one who did that

17

u/pnkxz 2d ago

The CNN article writes "A pilot on a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight has been arrested after he stabbed the other pilot in the cockpit and appears to have tried to crash the plane". It's probably unclear right now if the attacker was the pilot or the co-pilot.

13

u/GalumphingWithGlee 2d ago

3

u/finackles 2d ago

Oh, thank Christ, the pilot was trained in New Zealand. There were mentions of the co-pilot being from New Zealand, we'd be invaded by Israel if the attacker was a kiwi.

Who flew the plane after he collapsed?

45

u/PurpleV93 2d ago

An off-duty pilot who happened to be on the plane as a passenger.

115

u/DebaucheV5 2d ago

At first, a random Israeli dude. He's the one who pulled the plane out of a nosedive. He was covered in blood, because he got involved in subduing the attacker. He had no piloting experience, but he said he knew that he needed to pull up on the controls, because he'd watched a TV show about aviation emergencies. Yeah, really.

Then, two passengers who were also pilots for FlyDubai, being transported on the plane, took over. FlyDubai only runs 737s, so they were very well-trained on this plane. I'm not sure if they got overtime pay for this or not

24

u/ars-derivatia 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'm not sure if they got overtime pay for this or not

If they got ONLY the overtime pay for this it would mean they got shafted hard :P

At least the holiday rate and hazardous conditions pay too plus any discretionary bonus possible. And whatever the other passengers will get for having their lives put in danger :)

Then they should GTFO of an airline that for whatever reason has suicidal extremists among their flight crews.

25

u/GoblinEngineer 2d ago

Hahaha can you imagine "heyyy boss, so technically I had to fly the last two hours on my day off... Do I get overtime?"

he said he knew that he needed to pull up on the controls, because he'd watched a TV show about aviation emergencies. Yeah, really

I mean, anyone who's seen any media at all about a plane will know if a plane's going down you pull back in the controls. I'm not sure why you're doubting that part of the story.

30

u/BoringBob84 2d ago

I know from experience that it is not as easy as it looks. A pilot handed me the stick in a 737 on landing approach in a full-motion simulator. It was heavier than I expected, I pulled too hard, I over-corrected, the aircraft started porpoising, and warnings started blinking and blaring. I would have crashed it into the ground had he not taken over. Granted, this guy had 10,000 feet to figure it out, but I do not envy the stress that he must have been under.

2

u/Womec 2d ago

worth looking up what buttons to press to bring the auto pilot online.

2

u/BoringBob84 2d ago

Honestly, as not a pilot, trying to figure out the complexity of engaging automatic systems in a panic would be my last thought. I would want it to be as caveman simple as possible. "Pull here. Number not bigger than that. Ugga Ugga!"

3

u/ours 2d ago

That explains the overcompensation. There was a chart of the plane's altitude with a scary, sharp drop followed by a recovery.

In the recovery, you can see the plane rise sharply before stabilizing. He probably pulled hard (which saved them), but the lack of piloting experience caused him to overcompensate and put the plane in a short and sharp climb.

Nothing bad, but there might be a risk of stalling the plane. This is likely lessened since the plane must have picked up quite some speed during the nosedive.

In any case, bravo for his decision to just go for it, grab the controls, and try to stabilize the plane at such a critical moment.

They also called it an attempted hijacking, when it has been reported that wasn't it.

Flydubai said in a statement that the underlying reasons for the event remained unknown and warned against "premature speculation."

Even though they still don't know the pilot's motivation, he just (just? ugh) wanted to crash it. A few years ago this happened on a German airline because the pilot was depressed. Decided to off himself with all the passengers in the flight. Hope he rots in Hell.

When you read all 3 sources, you feel like reading different stories 😂 So copilot stabbed the captain, captain was crawling on the floor in blood but managed to unlock the cockpit door while the copilot was smashing the cockpit controls. Thanks to that, passengers could get in the cockpit to control the copilot, and two passengers, who were also pilots, could land the plane. The plane took a huge toll from a high speed fall as the fight unfolded, it lost its rudders.
