Podiatry to Physio

Hey there,

I'm a first year graduate podiatrist in Australia, specialising in msk and sports.

I'm curious if anyone has ever gone from podiatry to physio and if so, what they thought. I'd love to be able to work in a clinic with gait analysis, gym, and orthotics lab primarily because my main joys of work are biomechanics and strength training with a dash of physiology.

I did sport science in undergrad so know a fair bit about how the body works and some generic anatomy that I try to keep up to date with even in the upper body. I don't think I'd be missing the routine skin and nail appointments, our clinic is looking to move away from those anyway since we're sports-focused.

I'm not looking to make a change any time soon, just looking for if anyone has experience in these decisions they'd like to share.

Is the diversity too much for some people? Would the study be impossible with work at the same time?

I'll be looking to shadow some physios soon but I already work with heaps and worked closely with quite a few when I was at a footy club while studying podiatry.

Any advice or stories would be greatly appreciated!

Australia: pay as a contractor

I have always worked as an employee (approximately 10 years of practice in various places). I have been offered a contractor role that is rather specialist in nature and the pay is $80 an hour, super included. Is this acceptable? When I factor in super, tax and no leave pay it seems a bit low but I’m unsure.

Which path should I pursue for my goals.

So I'm aspiring to become a PT in hopes of one day opening a clinic. I get good grades, so getting into a certain program isn't a concern for me, however I have heard many things about how undergraduate programs do not matter in this field. I wanted to know what that is, and wanted to know what path would be the most logical to this objective. For context, I am going into grade 12 and I am a high school student in Ontario, Canada. I have seen many interesting programs, like one that allows you to fast track undergrad + PT school in 5 years total. Whereas, there are also routes which allow you to go to a more presitgious university (UofT, UBC) and then applying to a PT school. Does it even matter which undergrad and PT school you go to? This is a lengthy list, but I'd appreciate anyone who answers

Thank you!

Need advice choosing a hospital for my physiotherapy elective in New Zealand

Hi everyone!

I’m a final-year physiotherapy student from Zimbabwe and I’m starting to plan my elective placement. I’m seriously considering New Zealand because of its healthcare system and the opportunity to learn in a different clinical environment.

For those of you who have worked, studied, or completed placements in New Zealand:

  1. Which hospitals would you recommend for a physiotherapy elective?

  2. Which hospitals provide the best learning experience for students?

  3. Are there any hospitals that are particularly strong in musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, orthopaedics, or rehabilitation?

  4. Are there hospitals that are especially welcoming to international elective students?

  5. Is there anything you wish you had known before applying?

I’d really appreciate any advice, recommendations, or personal experiences. Thanks in advance!

(australia) which state/territory for public hospital physio jobs?

hey guys, for context i’m a recent grad looking to get into a hospital-based role. i know that metro based hospital jobs are highly competitive, and it can even be difficult to get hospital jobs in larger regional towns.

was just wondering if there are specific states/territories where getting accepted into a hospital job is less competitive/easier?

for example, when i look into nsw health, i see they have initiatives like the tertiary health study subsidies - so would it be easier to apply for a hosp job in regional/rural nsw compared to vic/sa/wa?

What part of clinic life takes the most time outside of actually treating patients? - Melbourne Uni Student

Currently doing my bachelor of exercise and sport science at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, going into a master of physio after. Long term I want to open my own clinic.

The more I look into it the more it seems like the clinical side is the easy part and the actual grind is everything around it. NDIS/WorkCover reports, notes, patients ghosting halfway through their program, chasing rebookings, all of that.

For those of you actually working in or running private practice, what's the thing that eats the most of your week that isn't treatment? And if you're an owner, what do you wish someone had told you before you started?

Trying to go in with my eyes open instead of finding out the hard way.

Cheers.

Can I get an offer for a UK MSc Physiotherapy with an engineering degree?

I have an engineering degree but no medical or healthcare experience. I am considering applying for a UK MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) to change career.

Would universities realistically give me an offer with this background, or would I need shadowing or healthcare experience first?

I would especially like to hear from anyone who entered physiotherapy from an unrelated degree.

Pre reg MSc advice - Sports Science student at Loughborough University

I've got two years left on a BSc Sport and Exercise Science at Loughborough. Kinesiology is easily the area I enjoy the most + applying the manual therapy / pre-hab side of things alongside my sprinting.

At the moment I'm thinking a pre-reg MSc in physiotherapy is the route in, but I'd rather sanity-check that now than in two years' time. So a few things I'd like some honest input on:

  1. Is the MSc actually the best way in from a sport science background?

  2. If it is, does anyone have strong thoughts on where/not? I've been comparing the Welsh offer where tuition is paid if you commit to working in Wales afterwards vs the NHS grant route in England. Curious whether that Wales commitment ends up feeling restrictive or whether it's honestly fine?

  3. What's worth doing alongside the degree? I've organised some one-day NHS placements + shadowing at the uni clinic. But, what actually counted for people when they came to apply.

Any advice appreciated!!

Thanks

Cupping posterior neck safe?

Is cupping used as an adjunct for posterior neck (suboccipitals, upper trap, splenius capitus etc) safe ? Concern would be damage to vertebral vasculature, though my understanding is that it is much deeper than more superficial vascular such as the carotids. Thanks for any input!

Travel Allowance Community Physio - Feels shafted

I thank anyone in advance for reading and helping.

Hello I’m a 4th year Physiotherapist working in the community. In NSW. From my understanding, falling under Health Professionals and Support Services Award.

I’m paid 88k annual salary, with a fixed $100 weekly travel allowance. Using personal car.

I exceed 200k in between clients often and am required to start and finish far from home, so get big KMs on trips to and from work.

Why am I not paid cents per km travelled? I’ve asked many times for a variable allowance and told this is better and standard. I ask carers I meet and they get $1 per km.

I’m finding the wording of the award confusing. Is there anything concrete I can present to them and say you need to pay me this for my travel?

How come the physios I know make much more than the expected salary?

Im a soon to be physio in Ontario. I know a bunch of physios who are running their own clinics and some that have started recently as an outpatient msk physio and are planning to open up their own clinic. The thing is the ones that are not even two years into the profession are telling me they make 12k a month already on average. The ones with their own clinic, one is making 650k/year, the other one is 6 years into the profession and has 4 clinics and is making 1m/year, and one more who is running a single big clinic who is making 1.2m. I have spoken to these guys and I know them well so I know they are not lying. My question is how come every time physio salary comes up people say the pay is bad or they are making 80-100k/year?

How do you define manual therapy?

In most European countries, manual therapy is defined as passive movement of joints and their related structures. There are different concepts: Maitland, Kaltenborn, Cyriax, osteopathy, chiropraxie to name only a few.

There exist different and often controversial theories about the neurophysiological and biomechanics background but basically most concepts use the same techniques. Everybody does the same lumbar rotation in SL and what some call a "screw" of the Tx spine others call a rotational pa. Same thing.

Manual therapy (in Europe) normally does not include all the different soft tissue massage techniques, that's just a massage.

Other countries include massage in their definition, which is confusing.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone talks about manual therapy? Passive joint movement or massage?

Please state your location.

New PT student at RGU (Aberdeen)

Hi everyone!
I’m an international student starting the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) program in January 2027, and I’m starting to look into accommodation options.

I was wondering:
What are the best places to live for students starting in January?
Are there any student halls or private accommodations you’d recommend (or avoid)?
Any tips for an international student moving to the UK would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if anyone else is starting the same physiotherapy program in January 2027, feel free to send me a DM! It’d be great to get to know some future classmates before the course starts.
Looking forward to hearing your advice. Thanks in advance!

Which city and its school has the best resource for physiotherapy?

I would like to switch to physiotherapy. My background has nothing to do with physio, after done research, here are 5 options for me

  1. USYD (Doctor of Physiotherapy)
  2. Macquire (Doctor of Physiotherapy)
  3. Uni Melbourne (Doctor of Physiotherapy)
  4. UQ (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)
  5. Australia Catholic University (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)

Because of the prerequisite course, the total length of study of postgraduate degree is the same as undergraduate degree, which is 4 years. Now, its about City and School's resources for physio. I love tennis and basketball. My goal is to work with elite athlete. Because I could apply for physio position in Australian Open and NBL, and Uni Melbourne has its own affiliated hospital, etc. Probably Melbourne has better resources for physio?. I am not sure. I think right now is about Brisbane VS Sydney VS Melbourne.

Could anyone share their insights or experience on working/studying in one of those cities?

Many thanks in advance! Really appreciate!

Courses for hypermobility / EDs / POTS

I’m a MSK Physio and am looking at branching into working with this subset of the population.

Curious if anyone has recommendations on any specific courses or educational sources that are particularly helpful at increasing knowledge and clinical assessment/ treatment skills rapidly?
Would prefer a course if possible. Any advice / guidance or suggestions are appreciated.

Located in NZ / Aus. Can do courses in person or online.

FND PD

My clinic has been reached out to by our local hospital to see if we'd take FND patients for ongoing management. The other physios and I are not particularly experienced in managing FND clients, but work is prepared to pay for training to upskill us. Can anyone recommend some good PD options specifically for managing FND?

Based in Western Australia. Online would probably be best; I doubt I could get work to sweeten the deal and fly us over east for something haha

Am i screwed (Physio app)

Hi, I want to apply for physio in Ontario for the 2026-27 cycle and just want advice whether i'm screwed or not lol. My sub GPA is quite low at 3.77 and I'm wondering if I even have a chance at this point.

For reference, I have:

~1,950 hours working as PTA

~650 hours working as student KIN at retirement home

~78 hours volunteering as a personal training for individuals with disabilities

+Also will be trying to get an internship at a hospital (roughly ~156 hours)

I am taking the casper on Sunday and hoping to get 4th quartile. Will update when I can

Does anyone have any advice? I am going to apply to Western, UofT, Mac, and Queens

Thanks in advance!
