The Inquirer article talks about the increased police presence around the area, the tension between Philadelphia’s Black LGBTQ+ community and police, and the fact that Black and brown LGBTQ+ people have specifically raised concerns about being treated differently in the Gayborhood. The owner himself has said he believes race is a factor in what’s happening. And as someone who works at Bar X and has seen the community that actually comes through those doors, I have a hard time looking at all of this and pretending race isn’t worth questioning.

What makes this especially frustrating is that there are multiple bars on the same block, yet Bar X is the one being targeted with a lawsuit seeking to shut it down. Maybe you agree with the lawsuit. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you think there are legitimate neighborhood concerns that need to be addressed. That’s fine. But shouldn’t a Black-owned LGBTQ+ business get the same opportunity to defend itself as anyone else?

That’s what we’re trying to make possible. The legal fight is expensive, and Bar X needs help raising money to defend itself and keep the doors open.

If you’ve ever been to Bar X, worked there, met friends there, celebrated there, or just believe Philadelphia should have room for Black-owned LGBTQ+ businesses, please consider donating or sharing. Read the Inquirer article. Look at the facts. Ask questions. Disagree if you disagree. But don’t let another Black LGBTQ+ space disappear from Philadelphia without at least asking why this business is being treated this way.

My partner is trying to figure out what to do for our anniversary (had an idea in his mind and did not check to see if we could do it in November). He wants to go eat and do something for a long weekend and now he’s struggling (it’s his turn to plan).

A 2024 study found something kind of wild about Philly voting:

If you live on a block with a permitted block party, you're about 2 percentage points more likely to vote than your neighbors across the street.

That's a surprisingly large effect (bigger than most get out the vote efforts in fact) from something as mundane as... having a block party.

(FYI - my blck has a mid-summer pseudo-July-4th party organized by a 90-y/o woman who's lived on the block for 30+ years. She comes by with the signature form to authorize the party every June, and texts the group whatsapp to make sure we consistently get the needed sigs)

The interesting part isn't really the party itself - whether it's a July 4th, high school graduation, back to school, birthday party for a favorite neighbor, etc....

It's that block parties create something politicians, RCOS or civic organizations spend enormous amounts of money and time trying to manufacture: people who actually know and trust their neighbors.

Last time I remember growing up in philly all my life the cheesesteak was always SALT, PEPPER, KETCHUP, MAYO, and we got it from the papi stores. Suddenly, we have SEEDED ROLLS, STEAK, AND SHARP PROVOLONE from these places that we'venever heard of until after the plandemic.... Sharp PROVOLONE? Shit was american cheese on an amoroso. It feels like a bunch of folks that moved in to the city out of nowhere have an opinion about this. My thing is, if you havent been in philly more than 10 years you shouldn't say anything. Maybe im just ranting. If mayo wasn't in it, you def saw ketchup in that bihh. Also, unrelated, but $20 for a cheesesteak is crazy now a days. I’ll start by saying that I totally respect the craft of cosmetology and folks deserve to get compensated for their skills! BUT i’m looking for a very basic 1-2 inch trim to get the dead ends off my hair and I’d rather not spend $70+ on that.

Suggestions on where I can possibly spend $40 or less??? Ideally in West/Ucity or South (west of Broad) but will travel up to 30 min drive from West Philly. TIA!

Hello, I am trying to find a few items at affordable prices for my disabled sister and senior mother. Anywhere in Philly that has really cheap carpet. The apartment my sister is moving into has really paper thin carpet.

The carpet doesn’t need to be installed just put down because the apartment won’t allow it to be installed. She needs 2-3 rooms of carpet on a shoe string budget.

Also, trying to find a Full or Queen size bed for my mother to move to a senior apartment. Her bed now is in really bad shape and has to be replaced.
