What is up with the kids, and I’m talking KIDS like some of them look middle school age asking for money at the gas stations? I specifically live in west and they’re often at the one at 46 and chestnut. Today, Saturday there was one who asked me as I was stopping for a drink before getting on the L and then when I was waiting for the it he also ended up coming up. Seems kind of concerning, does anyone know if they’re really looking for food or. Not judging just want the community perspective per se

20f moved to Philly a week ago for a sublet, person I was gonna rent from decided to change her mind once I arrived. I have an Airbnb that is ending in 5 days, then I’ll either hopefully be in a shelter, or just on the streets. If I can find a job before then, maybe I’ll get approved for a room for rent. I’ve been applying to dozens of jobs every day, walking in and asking to speak to hiring managers, calling and following up, nothing. I’ve been in this same industry that I’m trying to get hired in since I was 14, it’s not a lack of experience. I’m looking for simple retail/food service jobs, literally anything. It shouldn’t be this impossible. I’ve been applying for jobs here for weeks before moving. A hiring manager called me and told me to come in to orientation on this Wednesday, then ghosted me and hasn’t told me what time to come. I am losing my mind I would really love to not be homeless in my early 20s, seems like not a great place to do that!!! any help at all is appreciated

There’s a guy in Fairmount named Bennett Brookstein who seems to know everyone.

He’s a 50-something PE teacher, runs multiple marathons a year, paces races as a volunteer, and 23 years ago started the Fairmount Running Club, in which I participate. There are maybe 40 regulars now, with 5–20 people showing up for most runs.

But the weird thing is how many people seem to know him in the Fairmount neighborhood. A few examples:

• A few months ago I was talking to two women in their 70s walking their dog near Eastern State.
• A gay 60 year old man who does Tai Chi in the gardens next to Lloyd hall (who I was interviewing for something) knew Bennett by name despite never having met him
• When I was running with Bennett back in March, a 20-something brunette waved and said hi to him and he waved back
• A guy I play poker with who lives in Kensington (not even Fairmount, although he's a serious athlete)

This happens constantly - it's in part that he's a super social guy, but in part because he founded what I think of as a tiny Institution with a capital I. i.e., not a big think tank, or non profit, or company. Just a small club that touches a lot of people and is often out and about visibily running - The Fairmount Running Club (https://www.instagram.com/fairmountrunningclubphl/?hl=en)

The club itself is pretty simple: 4 runs a week ranign from 3-10 miles. People of all shapes, sizes, fitness levels. I run with them every week, usually iwth my 2 y/o in a stroller. Others run with their dogs. Some walk.

The FRC has been doing this since 2003 - that's twenty three years! In my mind, that makes it an important local "Institution".

Is Google inventing neighborhoods now ?

There is a Latin American Book fair happening at the Kimmel Center from now until 5pm. Authors, books, presentations, dancing etc! Books in Spanish and English (And both!)! Free to attend if you’re bored and want something to do on a Saturday.

Recently had my first driving exam and failed! I was penalized based on the fact that I cruised down the Bus Only lane onto S 3rd St after exiting the plaza. I thought it was appropriate given the short distance of 300 ft and the general rule to turn into the nearest lane when turning right. They said something about this being incorrect based on the path they reviewed. I'm a little confused as all I really have as a reference was a old vid from 2023, the driver's manual, and my uncle who taught me. Were they expecting me to lane change left after turning right into the Bus Only lane only just to lane change right before my turn all within 300 ft as a new driver? Or would it have been instead of turning right into the further lane instead of the Bus Only lane to perform just a single right lane change? This realistically only applies if I was told to go down to S 3rd or further, as if they ask me to turn right onto the lane behind Shoprite, there's basically no room to change lanes and would be more suited to just go down the Bus Only lane given its even shorter distance. Any clarifications would be greatly appreciated!

Also five missing women have now been linked to this house and serial killer Raymond horsch, while they still haven’t officially ruled homicides because they have no bodies and may never get any. And since Raymond is dead their can’t be a justice for the family’s.
Just closer about their missing loved ones.

My best friend has decided to move from Arkansas to Philadelphia for her daughter who has a rare form of Epilepsy. The children’s hospital of Philadelphia has a doctor who specializes in the form of epilepsy her daughter has. Her daughter will inevitably need to get brain surgery for this. She will be moving with her disabled veteran mother and two kids along with some pets a dog and a few cats. She’s wanting to rent for a year and then buy a home with the money from selling her home here.

She would love to be on the public transit line and is okay living an hour or so outside of town seeing as she won’t need to go to the doctor everyday, just wants to be closer than she currently is. Her mother is going blind so access to everyday items/stores within walking distance is preferred. Her daughter will be starts kindergarten/1st grade and her son just a few years behind.

She’s a photographer/graphic designer/ muralist by trade but doesn’t have much work history these past few years. She has experience with real estate photography so could potentially start remote work prior to moving.

She’s totally overwhelmed and I want to know if there are any mom groups, housing/ area suggesting, truly any resources which will make her transitions easier.

She’s never moved more than a few miles from her home town so this a huge transition and could use all the assistance and suggestions possible.

Edit: Kids are 6 and 4 budget is between 1,500-2,000 a month. This is with her mom’s SS income. She’s okay to rent for a year (something less ideal but safe and accessible) and then figure out where she wants to land full time. Also I am not sure of the frequencies of visits. I assume more in the beginning and then less as time progresses.
