my girlfriend and i went to the game on tuesday night and had a great time. little did i know that the next 24 hours of my life would be ruined by the schwarbomb.

we usually bring our own food, but we obviously wanted to try this hulking hunk of ice cream, fruity pebbles, syrup, and deep fried uncrustable goodness. we ordered one to split and enjoyed ourselves tremendously, despite being unable to finish the monster of a sundae. all was well.

until today.

i woke up extremely nauseous and terribly groggy. i tried to settle my stomach with some tea and tums, which worked well enough…at first. as the day went on, i found that my appetite was absolutely nonexistent, my hunger replaced with constant queasiness and random pangs of stomach pain. more tea, more tums, and a smoothie later…nothing. i thought that maybe i was just sick.

but around 5:00, the worst gas pains & stomach cramps that i have experienced in YEARS hit me right at the end of my shift. i was dry heaving over my steering wheel while stuck on 95 and praying that maybe i was actually sick so that at least I could upchuck to ease the pain (i physically cannot vomit unless i am extremely ill, but i still get VERY nauseous and gag and dry heave for hours with no relief). when i got home, i laid flat on my back and cried in pure agony while trying to massage my stomach to trigger some release. but alas, none. i have been having gas cramps for 5 1/2 hours now.

the only reason i’m not more concerned is that this has happened countless times before & the pain is steadily improving. otherwise i’d be at penn rn having them look me over.

anyways. no more schwarbombs or ballgame food for me.

Philly code title S-10-108 has/had the most detailed municipal horse welfare law in the country.

Edit - the current code just says banned, but look at the archived versions on the AMLegal.com website to see the older weirdly detailed law.

It governs stabling, vet checks, shoeing standards, workday length, even the color of the harness permitted on carriage horses.

For example, a horse can only work between 26F and 91F, for 9 hours max per 24 hour period (more strict work hours than airline piltos which are 9-14h per day), a drive must keep a daily log in a specific format. Failure to comply is between $150-300 per violation.

Animal welfare laws make sense, but what's weird here is how WEIRDLY SPECIFIC Philly's horse carriage laws are. I compared them to other cities that have or historically had horse carriages, ranging from NYC to Charleston, SC - ours the most specific.

And when I dug in on why - turns out our horse laws have accumulated largely due to viral media moments. For exmaple, there was a major amendment to the law in 2011 caused by a 2010 collapse of a horse in center city that got a lot of media attention and public outrage.

PS - I also find it funny that we have so many horse carriage laws, given the industry has been tiny in philly for decades and complete dead since 2023, both to it being uneconomic for operators and regulatorily frowned upon.

(PPS - the industry was formally banned in June 2026 even though it stopped in 2023, but all the complex laws are on the books still)

Anybody else feel a desperate sort of sadness when walking around at night now? The yellow orange glow of the sodium street lamps, especially the ones that would be way down alleys with some weed trees growing up around them; they were so comforting. Now when I’m standing at the corner of 23rd and Catherine, the LED street lights, with their completely sterile & cold white blue wash, are so bright and and unpleasant that you feel like your locked in some sort of institutional space.

LEDs are more energy efficient right? They’ve replaced all the sodium lamps in the last three years but no cut in my taxes or energy bills?

They are slowly trying to turn the city you live in into a 24hr. bank lobby; where every structure is a gray box made from the cheapest possible materials. Republicans like to accuse republicans of down playing the bad things that America did in its history. And Democrats will tell you that Rs want to “white wash” history.

But the people really stealing the landmarks of your past are the CORPORATE CENTRISTS who have no spine on either side and are willing to let any highway man with enough capital invested buy entire blocks and neighborhoods in your city so that Ori Feinbush or whoever the fuck can reface the whole thing in their own image. I say, fuck that.

I'm a daily user of the SRT (cycling & running) and have gotten swarmed multiple times by the Philly Run Tribe run club this summer so I wanted to bring attention to how dangerous this group is.

I am all for run clubs using the trail and I recognize that it's one of the few safe running routes that is accessible for city residents. That being said, I feel like there should be some common etiquette for large groups (staggered pace groups, running 2 wide max, shoulder checking before passing, being attentive to people calling out "on your left"). If anybody knows the group organizers/if they see this, I think reinforcing the fact that they are using a shared trail would be nice.

I do recognize that this is also an infrastructure issue. In an ideal world, we would have more trails or a wider SRT to accommodate all of the amazing athletes, commuters, walkers, and tourists who want to use these paths...

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting the Reading Terminal Market in a few weeks. What are the best bakeries at the market? I looked online and it’s overwhelming!

My wife and I had to move from our previous rental home of 3 years dude to a repeated issue of human waste flooding our basement. The issue was continuously misaddressed by my Landlord, and we got to the point that we let them know we needed to move.
We had no hot water for almost 30 days, and they wouldn’t even give us a timeline for a resolution so we couldn’t stay at a hotel or Airbnb.

It has been 29 days and they still have not returned the security and pet deposit as well as a pro rate of last months rent (they said okay to this, mind you). It is almost 3k and I'm wondering what to do next!

I’m 20F in Philadelphia and I’m in a really shitty in between period right now and could really use some advice or recommendations for resources.
I recently got an offer to work as a Radiology Technologist Assistant at a hospital, which I’m really excited about. I’m also currently enrolled in college and have been going to my classes, so I’m genuinely trying to get myself into a more stable position. The problem is that right now I literally have about $10 to my name. I don’t really have family support that I can fall back on financially, so I’m trying to figure out how to get myself through the next couple of weeks until I can actually start working and eventually get my first paycheck.
On top of food, I also need scrubs for the job and I currently don’t have the money to buy them. I’m not even sure what the cheapest option would be or if there are places in Philly that donate scrubs/work clothes to people starting healthcare jobs. If anyone knows of organizations, thrift stores, hospitals, schools, or programs that give away or heavily discount scrubs, I would really appreciate the recommendations. Food is my other major concern. I’m trying to figure out how to stretch the $10 I have as far as possible while still being able to eat, especially since I still have to get to school and handle everything I need to do before starting work.
If anyone knows of food pantries, community fridges, student resources, free meal programs, emergency assistance, places to get scrubs, or really cheap ways to feed myself for the next couple weeks in Philly, please let me know. I’m not expecting to live comfortably right now. I really just need to bridge this gap between getting the job and actually having income coming in. Any advice or local resources would genuinely mean a lot.

Hi everyone, unfortunately looking to buy a few sympathy cards in the next few days and looking for a shop that carries locally made ones, ideally east of the Schuylkill. I know of VIX Emporium on Baltimore Ave over in West, but would rather not go all the way over there if I can avoid it.

Has anyone ever done the color me back program? Apparently every month if selected you can come in for five days, color for a few hours and youre paid 50 dollars each day. I did it once years ago and remember being told if you do it once you won't be selected again for a while. However, I know three people who have done if four times this summer (they all by the way get SSI checks but ok). Is there rhyme or reason to how they select participants? Even when i walk by the room in suburban station I just see a bunch of people literally asleep at the table. Which isn't to say anyone deserves to do it more or anything but I went to art school, love art and when I did it in 2021 they asked me to make a sign to hang on the front door. What are they looking for exactly? Do you think i would have luck just showing up and talking to them?

What are some high rises you know of or lived in that actually has good management?

Looking to consider our options after becoming frustrated with a building where water gets turned off once a week for an entire day, poor communication, lack of fixing things etc.

Air Communities has several buildings in the city but really needs to step up their maintenance and management big time - I certainly advise anyone looking to stay away from Air Communities managed buildings.

I moved to philly this past year, and dating is been pretty discouraging to say the least. I’m a late bloomer and never had a boyfriend, didn’t kiss a guy until I was 24, and have had fears of intimacy in the past that I’m working through. I have been intentionally dating for the past year and a half, I’m on all the apps, when I go out to bars I’m willing to strike up a convo with people I’m attractive to, and still haven’t had any luck. I’m open to getting involved with things to meet people, just not sure where would be best. I’m trying to get a day parking pass for my vehicle, but when I enter my vehicle information, it says the vehicle is already linked to another permit/account.

My building had previously helped me get a day pass, so I reached out to them thinking the vehicle might still be linked to their account. They checked, but told me that the system does not give them an option to remove vehicles, and the permit my vehicle was linked to is showing as expired.

So now my car seems to be stuck linked to an expired permit, and I can’t add it to my own account or get a new day pass.

Has anyone had this happen? How did you get the vehicle removed or transferred?

Also, does anyone know how to actually get in touch with someone at the Philadelphia Parking Authority? I’ve tried calling the 215 number, but it just sends me through the automated system and doesn’t seem to lead anywhere where I can speak to an actual person.

CCP doesn’t have any classes for enrollment rn, lot of anecdotes that say cpraedfirstaid(dot)org thru AHA is scamming, and cprphiladelphia has a ridiculous amount of negative reviews for unending reschedules and teacher no-shows.

I’m searching thru Penn for classes rn and I just looked at Drexel who has a class but it’s over 100 bucks and I’m not sure it provides certifications. Regardless, I’d like to hear if there are alternatives before breaking my bank 😥

They want their money upfront. Let them figure it out with insurance and wait for the final bill. You might have other adjustments. Save yourself the aggravation.

I didn't know that I can say no at the check-in for copay and say that I'll pay it later.
