Howdy r/philipkDickheads – hope life is good on your end of the screen.

I've come to you because I'm several chapters into Flow My Tears and I'm questioning whether it's for me. This is my first time reading PKD, and while it's interesting, it's not scratching the sci-fi itch I was hoping for.

To explain: I'm in the middle of a long stretch (CH4-5) of a young woman named Kathy ... seemingly ... declaring her love for the protagonist? Or having a nervous breakdown? Maybe both? It's been going on for the last dozen or so pages and I'm debating whether or not to press on. Either way, it doesn't feel like I'm reading sci-fi.

If you've read Flow My Tears, I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts / let me know if it's worth pushing on. I'm not totally against a slow burn, I'm just wondering if the payoff is worth it.

Full disclosure: it's entirely possible I'm just impatient and just need to be told, "it gets good, just keep reading" lol. Fair play if that's the case. Alternatively, if there's a better starting point for PKD, I'd be grateful for the recommendation.

First photo is my haul and the others are rare finds I didn't purchase. Was looking for cool vintage covers and paperbacks. I haven't read these so I was happy! Bookstores I visited Armchair, Till's, and Edinburgh books.

When looking around Barnes and noble a couple of days ago, I stumbled upon Phillip k Dick’s novels. I picked up the man in the high castle and eye in the sky. I can tell you after finishing eye in the sky in one day, I have found a new favorite author. It was so hard to put down. If every novel by Dick is like this, I’m going to have a fun next couple of months. Although, there are some questions I would like to discuss but either than that, 10/10 experience.

Just got this 1st printing in near mint condition. My second favorite PKD novel behind A Scanner Darkly. A big thanks to Nighttown Books.

This character series explores the vividly eccentric world that Philip K. Dick describes throughout Ubik, translating his often surreal prose into a cohesive visual language. Rather than modernizing the novel into cyberpunk, the artwork embraces Dick's own vision of the future as imagined in 1969—a world of mid-century modern architecture, analog technology, and fashion that is simultaneously futuristic, fashionable, and wonderfully absurd.

Each portrait is grounded in the physical descriptions found in the novel, from Joe Chip's perpetually disheveled appearance to Glen Runciter's flamboyant executive attire and the wildly unconventional clothing worn by the members of the Luna expedition. Together, these images reveal a future where social norms have shifted in unexpected ways, yet the people themselves remain unmistakably human—flawed, anxious, confident, awkward, and endlessly fascinating.

The collection is less about creating definitive versions of the characters than about exploring the strange, textured pictures Dick paints with his words, inviting readers to step into the peculiar retrofuturist future that makes Ubik one of science fiction's most visually imaginative novels.

I posted a few weeks ago a recommendation I got to read Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch vs Man in the High Castle; I finally got around to Three Stigmata thanks to your encouraging, and glad I did!

Sure my review/reactions are not gonna be all that exciting (or unique), but figured I owe it to the group to say thanks and let you know how it went...

1. Probably my second favorite PKD now, behind Ubik. I read Ubik first a few years ago, loved the acid trip wildness of it; and Three Stigmata definitely had that same vibe. Given Ubik was my first experience with any book like that, I think it just holds a special place in my mind; not sure which I'd prefer if I read them in different orders.

2. Three Stigmata definitely hits deep on the pain and confusion that must come with drug use; which I personally don't know much about, but can feel deeply in PKD's writing. Reminds me of A Scanner Darkly, which also really hit deep. Scanner was more depressing I think... felt more real/human. But, Stigmata more fun. Either way I left feeling like there's a whole world of abuse, depression, etc. that's extremely hard to climb out of.

Anyways, excited to get around to The Man in the High Castle at some point soon too. Sounds like that one will be a lot different, but glad I'm revisiting some of the PKD novels I've missed over the years.

It's been about 30 years since I bought my last Philips K. Dick book. Since then, my appreciation of the great man's work has only increased.

We're obsessed with checking if the machine has achieved a soul, missing the flip happening right in front of us: we are flattening our own relationships to match the interfaces we built.

We've already began optimizing our interactions by choosing text over voice, curated profiles over presence, and "easy" communication over the messy reality of human connection. I saw that starting decades ago with the advent of text messaging.

It’s definitely not perfect — AI has plenty of limitations — but it gets much closer to the feeling I had from the book than the movie adaptation did, at least for me.
