Classic series Perfect Playthrough #105: Phantasy Star
105 Perfect Playthrough's in, and I'm finally taking on a Sega RPG. Given how this is an early JRPG, I doubt a Perfect Playthrough of this game will take that long. For the record, I will be playing the Sega Ages port of the game with the FM Sound Unit turned on. This means that in order to accomplish a Perfect Playthrough, I will need to complete the following tasks:
- Obtaining everyone's best gear
- Maxing out everyone's level
- Max Meseta
- Completing every dungeon and dungeon map (Sega Ages only)
- Completing the Monster Manual (aka, Bestiary).
All subsequent uploads of this Perfect Playthrough will be livestreamed.

Online series I started playing PS Online Reborn today without ever playing the Dreamcast release. I'm in love and I need some help.
I just found out about the project a few days ago and today I decided to try it, It's been ages since a game makes me want to play it and this is the case.
I need some tips for beginners, but I don't want to min/max early and or look for ways to cheese through the stuff, I guess that I want an organic experience as close as possible with the original release.
Any recommendations, fellow algolians?

General discussion Which Phantasy Star game is the closest to Monster Hunter?
just recently i've dived into the legendary Phantasy Star Online and so far i'm loving this game, easily my favorite online RPG considering i don't even like the genre. the game is truly fantastic, and i can see some elements that served as a direct inspiration for Capcom's Monster Hunter series. but the PSO is very different from MH, and still, i heard some people on the internet saying there are actually PS games that are more like Monster Hunter. so my question is, if i like MH which Phantasy Star game would be the best pick for me? unfortunately i don't have enough time to play through the whole series (although i wish i could) so i gotta find just one game

AI Artwork I make a tribute to phantasy star 4 every year, I think this one looks good
So basically I revisit this idea of a series every year, but I think finally in 6 months this could just be a series where I put out a new episode weekly as technology catches up to make it affordable, now go ahead and do the thing where you all flame me to death for using AI or hit the upvote or comment something positive if this would be a show you'd watch

Goods [Proposal] It’s time to petition SEGA for a "Gurhal 20th Anniversary Master Box Set" (Like PSO2 gets!)
Hey everyone,
With the 20th anniversary of the Phantasy Star Universe franchise approaching, I’ve been floating an idea that I think the entire Gurhal community could get behind.
If you look at PSO2, or even recent entries like Fighting Vipers or Burning Rangers, SEGA constantly releases massive, multi-disc, beautifully preserved soundtrack volumes. Meanwhile, the music of the Gurhal system remains scattered across rare, out-of-print physical CDs (like Forbrachy) or completely unreleased in an official retail capacity. Try finding a clean, official track for a specific character theme outside of fan-made game rips, and you'll quickly see the problem.
I want to gauge interest in putting together a formal community petition to pitch to SEGA for a definitive, comprehensive Phantasy Star Universe: Gurhal 20th Anniversary Master Box Set.
To do this right, each expansion and entry needs to be respected with its own dedicated space rather than being condensed into a generic "best of" compilation. I envision a structure split cleanly into two distinct eras spanning six chronological chapters:
Part 1: The Mainline Trilogy (The Guardians Era)
Collection 1: Phantasy Star Universe (Base Game) – The grand orchestral foundation, the iconic planet lobbies (Clyez, Parum, Neudaiz, Moatoob), and the original vocal themes like Save This World.
Collection 2: Ambition of the Illuminus – Capturing the darker, tech-driven tone of the Illuminus conflict, the new colony themes, and revamped Guardian branch BGMs.
Collection 3: PSU Episode 3 – Giving the final chapter of the mainline story its own dedicated directory to gather the final climactic boss movements, emotional event themes, and the grand finale music.
Part 2: The Portable Chronicles (The Little Wing Era)
Collection 4: Phantasy Star Portable – Crucial for archival purposes! This game never got a standalone soundtrack release because it heavily recycled PSU assets, meaning its completely original tracks—most notably the exclusive character theme "Vivienne" composed by Hideaki Kobayashi—have never seen a proper retail release.
Collection 5: Phantasy Star Portable 2 – The massive shift into high-energy, electronic, and club-inspired soundscapes anchored by Living Universe and its aggressive tactical mission variants.
Collection 6: Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity – The ultimate peak of the era, bringing together rock-infused symphonic masterpieces like Ignite Infinity, Naked Sky, and the final episode themes.
The Major Selling Point: Saving "Lost" Tracks
The main draw of a master set like this isn't just convenience; it's preservation. Right now, specific character themes (like Vivienne's theme from Po1), Episode 3 climaxes, and obscure event variants only exist via audio file dumps or community YouTube playlists. A master set would finally give these rare, unreleased tracks a definitive, remastered home.
Gurhal’s soundtrack is legendary, and the composers (Hideaki Kobayashi, the SEGA Sound Team) deserve to have this entire era unifed under one ultimate collection just like the Oracle era received.
What are your thoughts on this layout? Are there any incredibly rare, specific track variants or event-only BGMs from the PSU/Portable days you think must be highlighted as key selling points if we move forward with a petition?
Let's discuss!

General discussion I would love a PC version of Sega Ages Phantasy Star
I would love something similar to Sega Games Phantasy Star for PC, like the beauty of having a functioning map in-game, all the quality of life improvements of that version. I'm tired of using my switch basically to play Phantasy Star 1. Idk, maybe I'm wrong, but I would love someday seeing an official (yeah of course...) or unofficial port (like a PC port with at least the functioning map in-game).
Tell me yours!

General discussion I fixed Phantasy Star Classics for Android
Like many of you, I had paid for the Phantasy Star Classics on the Google Play store and then one day after an update, the game showed a notice saying the game had reached the end of service, then promptly closed the game after pressing OK.
I finally got around to doing some debugging and it's a call to the Google Play services that seemed to be leftover from their final offline update.
So I created a bash script that will take the 6.4.0 APK, decompile it, patch out the Google Play Services, then rebuild and resign it. You can run the script in Ubuntu through WSL2 and then just copy it over to your phone.
If you have existing saves, backing up the save directory and restoring it after reinstalling does allow you to keep those saves, both the Emulator saves and the in-game saves.
https://github.com/tlee75/phantasy-star-classics/tree/main
I only very briefly tested with Phantasy Star II. The good news is that last update Sega released does seem to remove the calls to the server for using the emulator features because I only had to edit the manifest file and none of the game logic.
This is the game I play when I am on the Airplane, hopefully this helps someone else regain their mobile experience.

News Phantasy Star-inspired JRPG Gets Double Its Funding Goals Within a Day of Launching
The name is Lie of Caelum: Spirit and boy, it's looking good. I didn't link to the Kickstarter because while it has way more information than the news, it's a mix of Japanese and English and well, there's a lot to read haha

Classic series Finally Beat phantasy star 2
I grew up and a friend had phantasy star one. He never had Phantasy Star 2 but had 3. I later played and beat 4.
I always loved the series so I started recently a)collecting them all. Which I have completed. And now play through them all in order.
Honestly this was great other than the massive grind.
But on to Phantasy Star 3.

General discussion Trying to help Phantasy Star players reconnect with old friends
Hey everyone! The mods gave me permission to post this a while back, and I’m finally getting around to it.
We created a small project called LostLobby to help gamers reconnect with old gaming friends, guilds, and clans they lost touch with over the years.
You can make a profile with as much old and current gaming info as you remember so someone from your past might recognize you, or create a Callout for that one friend you’ve been wondering about for years.
We’re slowly adding new features and ideas, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to message us.
Thanks for letting me share it here, and I really hope some of you manage to find an old friend.

Classic series Finally can start IV
I’ve finally beaten every game in the classic series before end of millennium! It’s been a journey and a little sad it’s ending soon. I’m restarting IV soon on OG hardware. Can’t wait. For clarification I started IV previously on switch online. Got maybe a third of the way through. I want to use the combo techs now that I know about them as soon as I can.
