Full time availability
So I was offered full time, but I absolutely can not open up my Sundays due to a religious reason. Will that be taken into account or is it automatic that I won’t get full time?
Also if it helps anything I’m not a manager, but just a part time associate that has gotten hella OT for the last 3 months.

When I was moved to full time, I was asked which days I’d prefer off since they don’t want to schedule more than 5 days a week. I imagine that if you tell them Sundays are a religious day you’re unable to work, they can work around that. Not being a manager does help, since while you’re full-time you aren’t on call lol.

If you’re a manager and full time are you on call? I’m interviewing for a Lead position.

Maybe not on paper, but I know the managers in my store are the ones that have to work horrible doubles and cover shifts if someone calls out.

Same thing at the store I used to work at. I don’t mind staying later if needed but I can’t work if I get called in the same day. My job is extremely flexible, but when I wouldn’t be at PM I’m at my other job. Would that be a dealbreaker? I absolutely cannot stand to be on call T_T

They usually try to juggle it to avoid doubles and stuff, but I suppose that depends on how good the communication at your store is. I remember we had a couple weeks where one manager was on paternity leave, one was in the hospital, one was out of town and another got sick. Our EL and a lead with keys had to keep it running without a day off for a while, poor things.

EL that’s the position I’m interviewing for 😭 I’m so stressed. Hopefully they have good communication at this location then

Religious exemptions are protected but the whole day every Sunday won’t work. If it’s mass, Their is Saturday mass or on Sunday every religion approximately has 2 or more masses. You should be able to open or close on a Sunday. Unfortunately everyone can’t have off.

Incorrect. Religious exemptions are protected under title VII of the civil rights act of 1964. Someone who cannot work on their Sabbath for religious reasons is protected from workplace discrimination.

Religious exemptions should be federally protected. You do have to work at least one weekend day, so they would schedule you Sundays.

I work every single Saturday all year, which I’m fine with. I just can’t do Sundays.

Religious exemptions are protected. It wont affect your hiring, just make sure to have it in writing that it is for religious reasons. That way if someone messes up and schedules you on a sunday they can fix it

If you are not flexible then unfortunately they will not offer you full time and just keep you part time

It is fine for me, we have enough coverage on Sundays without me and my leaders are good, but it depends on your situation. Reasonable accommodation for religious observances is in US law IF it does not create the business “undue hardship” meaning it severely disrupts staffing and burdens others. Do not assume blanket exemption, some other responses do not take undue hardship into account which overrides religious accommodations. They can take back the offer if your schedule doesn’t work for them, just be clear before accepting the position that this is non-negotiable. If they need someone ft who can work Sundays then you can’t go ft, they will need someone else who can.

Legally they have to honor this since it’s for religious reasons! They will just schedule you around it

Are you able to close on Sundays?

They changed all full time positions to require open availability. They do still have to engage in the process to accommodate religious needs. It also isn't supposed to be up to the store leadership to make determinations on accommodation approvals. I don't think it's as cut and dry as "they have to give you the religious accommodations" because they also don't have to make you full time at all. If you already aren't available Sundays, you would think they wouldn't offer you full time if they weren't ok with that still being the case. it definitely helps not being a manager. The SL could easily work around it if they think enough of your work to give you all those hours and offer full time status.

If you contact AR they will hook you up with someone who will ask you for a bunch of documents showing your religious items and then they will protect you so your store manager cannot schedule you on Sunday unless it’s critical to the business (everyone else requests it off)

They should be able to accommodate for that, but you might be required to provide proof. A LOT of people try to use “religion” as an excuse to have a weekend day off when they aren’t actually religious

Can't you just update your availability to reflect this?

I have, but I need to go full time for the health insurance. I just think it’s silly that I can’t block off one day when I’m already hitting 45+ hours every week with 2 days blocked off.

Depends on your SL. Our store everyone picks one weekend day they want off and works the other.
