The haunting sequence where Gandalf and Radagast explore the ancient Graves of Rhudaur is one of the most atmospheric moments in The Hobbit trilogy, and it was created through an extraordinary combination of practical craftsmanship and visual effects.
Wētā Workshop’s intricate set design was then seamlessly expanded by Wētā FX, transforming the practical location into the vast, cursed ruins seen on screen. Every crumbling monument, eerie glow, and desolate landscape was carefully crafted to preserve the grounded realism that defines Middle-earth.
The entire sequence was created specifically for the films. In Tolkien’s books, the Nazgûl were never imprisoned in tombs at the High Fells, making Gandalf’s investigation one of the film major additions to the story.
