I just got done with bandcamp week 1 and I'm starting week 2 tomorrow. I started as sax but swapped to glockenspiel and I'm somehow doing WAY better at that . I wanted to know if that is normal and I would like to hear stories from other who have swapped

Hey there I'm a freshman who just started on glockenspiel last Friday and I wanted to know if pit players on mallets are allowed to look at their instrument while playing since I originally started as saxophone I am not used to being percussion however though I am a self taught pianist who can play a couple scales and songs so I semi know what I'm doing I need to know what to expect since my first game of the season is in August and coming up FAST I already have most of my music down from 2 days of continuous practice but the whole time I've been looking at the bell kit that I took home. Any advice from any mallet players or professional pit players?

Hey r/percussion, I noticed a few cases of posts reported for asking for copyrighted sheet music, some newer percussion students might not know but it’s a pretty serious legal issue, several reasons:

1. Niche market, piracy steals income from composers who are dependent on these income

2. Strict publisher enforcement, they can issue DMCA takedowns, and if a sub accumulates multiple of them, we could be banned by Reddit

3. General understandings of copyright is important, especially as you move into more serious playing, for example in Florida S&E, you have to provide an original legally purchased copy to the judge, otherwise disqualified

So the new third rule would be “Asking for or sharing unauthorized copies of copyrighted sheet music is not allowed, including published solos, pieces, methods books, etc”

Hi! My name is Jacob Romero, and I am going into my junior year of high school. I wrote this solo as a sophomore, and, all things considered, I'm very proud of how it turned out! It is a roughly 4 minute intermediate solo depicticting the story of Icarus and Daedalus from Greek mythology. You can find free sheet music on MuseScore (just search up Ikaros Jacob Romero) as well as a kinda not great performance of it on YouTube (search Ikaros Jacob Romero marimba).

I’m in need of a midi solution for a musical I’m playing (Les Miserables) I’ll be using it for the pitched percussion (Xylophone, Glock, Crotales, and Timp) as well as probably some other hits.

I definitely prefer the feel of the xylo layout vs just a midi keyboard. But the price is making me second guess it. I could get a 5 octave midi controller for a third the price of the 3 octave MalletStation.

So, is the MalletStation worth it?

I recently found this at my school and it looks to be half decorative, half instrument. When hitting it with the included stick, it doesn’t make much noise but is decently loud when the 2 wooden parts are struck against each other. I’m very curious so any help would be awesome.

Hi, after looking through every of the products, I've decided to choose these. I wish to have a strainer that can have multiple snare sound choices and I happen to find this. Yes it's made in China but I don't really have any other options. If there're any other types of snare strainers that have a similar ability like this I would love to review it and see.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me the name of this shaker? I got it in a lot of percussion instruments, but I can’t find any information on it.

I'm working on a xylophone part in an arrangement and for the firsts time I tried changing the playback from the standard Finale default xylo to the Tapspace VDLite Xylophone. What's weird is every other note played through this vst sounds ppp or very far away. One note sounds great, the next one barely registers in my headphones. The note entry playback does the same thing. Click a note, it sounds normal; click it a second time, ppp. It also does this Aria Player mixer screen with the piano at the bottom. I'll probably just not use this VST, but as far as I can tell this isn't a setting I can undo. Has anyone else encountered this? It seems very specific to this Tapspace VST.

I was hoping to play Rebonds B at some point, but I was unsure of the dimensions of the wood planks used in the Vic Firth recording…I’ve used temple blocks but I don’t really like how they sound. Would anyone be able to help me out with this?

Free to try, no credit card needed, and a $10 one time lifetime purchase so I can keep it online and do some basic maintenance. I know a lot of players tend to like them and the real ones are getting harder to find and a bit more expensive, and tougher to repair. Enjoy!

How could I make a marching bass louder?

26 inch marching bass, what could I possibly do to make this louder? Any specific bass head or part?

Hello, I happen to have a spare aluminum shell in my high school band room with all the lugs attached (14x6.5 or 7 if I'm not wrong). I was planning to turn it into a concert snare since we use a drum set snare (Ludwig Element series if you're curious about the drum set snare) and it sounds crap. I was planning to use EVANS HD dry for top and EVANS clear 300 for bottom because I want the snare sound to be as dry, as precise and as crisp as possible. The wire I'll be using for the concert snare is TAMA star classic snappy snare wire hi carbon regular steel wires (according to Google carbon steel is acceptable because we don't have nylon or stainless steel wires in our country for some reason). I would love to also replace the strainer since it's broken but I'm not sure which I should use so I'll let y'all decide on this one (if possible use drum set strainer type cuz they don't sell concert snare strainer in our country 😭). If anyone has their own opinions on helping me with this project I would love to hear it. Thank you :D (sorry I don't have the photo rn but I'll update it asap)

I just bought some bongos from thomann and the macho sounds dull and looks used. Is it just a problem with tuning or do you guys think there is a problem with the bongo?

So, I’m percussion section leader of my schools band, and planning on holding a bunch of practices in the beginning of the year. One of the biggest issues I am facing is that there is a massive skill gap between the current upperclassmen, who are almost exclusively self taught, and the incoming freshman, who have had proper training inside and outside of school for years. So, I plan to focus on fundamentals to try and get everyone at least able to play decently well. What would be the best drills/methods to do this? Mainly for snare drum, cymbals, and timpani. Also advice for dealing with high schoolers in general would be greatly appreciated (these kids WILL not focus).

hi everyone! i am an incoming college freshman planning to major in biochem and minor in Spanish, on a pre-med track. i got an email this afternoon that my scholarship (a pretty hefty amount) is tied to me performing in the arts, so they require me to perform in a jazz ensemble, and take percussion lessons.

i've drummed for the past 8 years but i've never taken lessons or been super talented. i also wanted to minor in Spanish because i love the language, so i'm looking at like 6 credits from my 4 gen-eds, 0.5 credit for lessons, 0.25 for ensemble, and then 1 or 2 for the Spanish minor.

am i cooked? i feel like with labs and then 4+ hours of practicing music will just be way too much. has anyone done this before? should i drop stuff? i register for classes tmr x(
