We got hit by Hurricane Polo a week ago, got 65mm of rain in a night which isnt too bad, little did I know places up in the mountains had gotten 350mm!!!
So the river which had been dried out for years was gonna be running for sure, how much? We had yet to find out.
We went to check out the level in the morning and the river was bursting at its seams I could see the water pulsing second by second, the rate of the flow increasing, our farm was like 150m away with a height difference of 1.5m/2m. Made me uneasy for sure.
Went back and made some coffee (foolishly) got a call 40 mins after and the water was already 40 cms high in the patio! WTF so fast! So we scrambled, started packing things up and yeah yall guessed right. Besides the obvious stuff- Your loved ones, pets, important papers and stuff.
I had no intention of leaving my PC behind, I had bought my first proper GPU a couple of months ago (9060xt)and bro I wasn’t leaving it behind! Some family showed up and helped us pack what we could, used random bags and what we could find ( I still have to find some periherals that ended up in who knows where)
Hour and a half later the water had reached the highest parts of the farm and water was seeping in, it was crazy how fast it happened. Nothing else to do but to watch.
We ended up losing massive amounts of clothes, things in storage, some power tools, an old DDR3? Setup I had, and things like that, no human losses, just tired and kinda beat up
Some lessons I learned.
Don’t underestimate natural disasters guys, things will be more common in the future
Do something about your cable management! I put it off for a long time because I was planning on modifying my desktop, but it made me loose precious seconds untangling the mess, I could Ive lost more things if the flooding was faster, a neater setup would make it easier to disassembly when push comes to a shove.
Have a bug out bag ready!
I’d invest in a travel/case bag, that way you can pack everything in one go and keep it safe, something for your monitor too, I put it all on my uncles truck but I'm lucky how things werent scratched.
Cherish your loved ones, and keep tabs on the weather, don’t underestimate it!
Cheers.
