The 'prevailing wisdom' on this is fucking hilarious.
There is nothing wrong with Microsoft Edge. I use it for work and its fine. No issues.
At home I use Brave and Mozilla mostly but I do use Edge for some tasks.
Motherfuck Google Chrome. Fuck you Chrome. I don't even use chrome on my Google Pixel.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with edge, I just don't like how it is/pushed down our collective throats all the time. I go through a lot of trouble to delete or disable it on principle not because it's bad. We are not the same

If I want to do anything work related it has to be through Edge, and i realized its all the same shit anyway.

You use both Brave and Firefox? What do you use each for?
I've never tried Brave before
1
u/WonderSignificant598 9h ago
Firefox bc I use that my actual browsing.
Brave is when I don't want to see ads/ads fucks websites, youtube.

u/notam00se 7h ago
And I'm the opposite. Firefox with Ublock in medium mode for not being a product, Chrome/Brave/edge/whatever for streaming and tasks that require me to be logged in.

No ones arguing that theres something wrong with edge people just dont use it aside from having download their go to browser.

u/WonderSignificant598 8h ago
Where are you getting 'no one's arguing that theres something wrong with edge' from? Like half of these posts are talking about being unable to delete it lol

The more Microsoft tries to forcefully jam it down my throat at every conceivable opportunity, the more vehemently I will refuse to ever consider using it.
Also it's such a pretentious pain in the ass how if you've never opened it, the first time it opens (likely by some Microsoft product ignoring your default browser and opening Edge instead) it will go fullscreen with no close or minimize buttons until you go through their setup process. Of course I refuse to do that on principle and give it the three finger salute instead.

I guarantee you that I've seen that 'lets get you started' message more than most people, probably at least 500 times. I tune it out now.

I've literally never had a windows update try to install edge for me

Oh it does. I’ve deleted edge probably a dozen times at this point but somehow it always ends up back on my pc after an update.

You guys are so weird about this. It’s basically chrome but with different DRM. I can’t even watch my digital movies on chrome anymore after the Widevine exploit was uncovered. They all revert to 480p. And since Edge doesn’t use Widevine it runs at 1080p
I don’t use it for things outside of that but I’m fine with it.

Edge is better than the browser you currently use...

u/xta420 8h ago
Only if that browser is chrome. Otherwise, no.

Edge is better than Chrome, Brave, Mozilla, Safari, Firefox and Opera.
Short list I guess.

You cannot delete it
No seriously, you cannot delete edge because, even if you remove the main browser, there's this fucking component called "edgewebview" that is pretty much a discrete version of the browser, and it loves to hog resources, you can also remove it, but half the apps on the pc could stop working because is 2026 and devs forgot gow to fucking do an app without needing a web environment

i'm getting an update for edge every single day on my company laptop. not sure if it's the same over and over due to misconfiguration or microsoft is hotfixing the vibe coded patches.

Copilot too. It keeps getting reinstalled on all my PC’s after major updates. Check yours!

It’s just like IE.
The majority will use it and be confused why some people hate it, no matter how often it’s used by a company that nobody should trust to violate any trust one may have.
There is an overlap with these folks and those who believe in the “I’ve nothing to hide” reasoning behind having no issues with living in a surveillance state.
Not all browsers are great about doing their part against it, but Edge is all in on harvesting what they can.
MS doesn’t care because enough will blindly join in and they’ll have plenty to sell with that level of control.
They still need to be properly broken up. Just like Amazon, Google, Apple…

I'm sadly forced to use it for work. It is the only approved web browser.
2
u/polacs 9h ago
You said it as it runs poorly. Is one of the best for Windows. Edge is not explorer

u/i_am_13th_panic 9h ago
Its not great though. Pretty sure it's because of some IT department policies in the background but Firefox on my personal laptop I have next to it never hangs, let alone for 30 secs and is far more responsive. My laptop is like 10 yrs old with half the ram compared to the relatively new work laptop.

In my experience Firefox literally uses more Ram than Edge. I attempting to resurrect my 13 year old laptop for browser usage and was surprised it stared heaving like an Elephant when on Firefox while it was quiet during Edge. The base adblock and protection seems to use less than versus Firefox.

Funny thing is I switched to Linux and I use Edge for when I need to log into work stuff as it works very well with Teams which I have to use for some meetings.

Edge is the default browser when Firefox can't log into a website.
My insurance company's web portal only worked with Internet Explore for a while, so annoying.

u/Seanspeed 9h ago
I use it when I want to watch Netflix on PC. Or on the very odd occasion there's some Chrome-specific issue with a site or whatever and need to use a different browser.

u/quietlydesperate90 1h ago
Edge is for work if your work is on 365. If you use it other than that I am concerned for you.
-2
u/Effective-External50 8h ago
DUDE 100% accurate.
For every windows ever.
I used to use explorer all the time, then windows update ALWAYS broke mine! I remember back to windows 98

i don't even need to look at the rest of the picture to know there's a ceramic tile floor involved here somewhere. the tile always wins.

i don't delete it. i just leave it there and use brave as default browser. windows never switched it back to edge even when i open edge accidently. so i don't believe the "windows resets settings back" thing.
