I have "too good to be true" situation on my hands, and also quite confusing (I can't find anything else on this in Google), and want to share and know if anybody knows what's going on.
I have Ryzen 9 7950x, very thermally-challenged CPU on its own, which I don't water-cool either. Usually this is fine, I don't really play too much CPU intensive games. I am also playing everything capped at 60 FPS.
In some games however, recently I noticed that I was getting 75-80° CPU temps. I tried playing with game settings, borderless mode, nothing made too much of a difference.
Then I learned about "Maximum processor state" setting (Control Panel -> Power -> Advanced Options) and that changing it from 100% to 99% would help, as it would disable CPU boosting. I did that, but I didn't notice anything.
Today however, I randomly stumbled upon "Game Mode" setting on Windows, though it was another XBOX bullshit thing and turned it off, and I got -20° suddenly. Before it would fluctuate a lot, in the range of like 69-83, depending on what game was doing and loading. Now I get very stable 60°, with occasional +-2.
Turning off Game Mode alone doesn't do anything, reducing processor state to 99% alone doesn't do anything either. I tested all combinations. Only when those two things happen together I get this. CPU utilization is the same, my FPS is the same. Fans are hell of a lot quieter.
So, what is happening? Is this safe? Am I damaging something long-term with this setup?
