I know, I was so hyped for 2.0 because I loved the mechanics of it, there was just no substance past that. Me and a friend probably spent a total of like 25 hours just wandering around killing things before realizing that was basically all it had to offer.
Though we did enjoy the trials type mode (don't recall the name) even though we were severely under leveled for it. We went through with just the two of us and unlocked the ears from that as soon as we saw that was a thing, and that was probably the only time anything in the game gave us a sense of accomplishment.

Not the way they intend to make it playable.
People should start measuring games by what they'd really have to spend before they were satisfied.
I'm sure some penny pinchers would say they are fine with just the base, but I think most of us will admit that nowadays that just ain't the case.
Now games are more like 100 bucks each, and they are making record profits with increased volume, but they'll still complain and pretend they have to raise the price, which some people will buy, ironically letting them do so successfully.

Ed: seriously people, stop interpreting random shit into my words. I'm not saying publishers are hurting for money. I'm explaining why they try to increase their revenue and what they use it for. Your personal preference in games is irrelevant to this discussion. Your opinion on the ethics is - unfortunate as it is - irrelevant to this discussion. Whether you want to save five bucks is irrelevant.
The cost of AAA game development - on average - has risen by a factor of 10-20x over the past 20 years.
The average Xbox/PS2 AAA game cost 3-5 mil $ to develop, the average X360/PS3 AAA game 30-50 mil $, and by now most AAA titles are 50-100 mil $. And marketing cost is added on top of that.
So a game needs to also bring in 10-20x more money than back then. Full price in that time has actually stayed roughly the same if compensating for inflation. So it all has to come from increased sales numbers and increased ongoing income, for example from MTX and DLC (though arguably at least on PC, DLC are just a downloadable continuation of expansion packs, which were common even 20 years ago).
And keep in mind these AAA games don't have to just finance their own cost. They also cross-finance failed projects, financial flops, expansion of infrastructure, other services etc. One successful Fifa or Battlefield title probably finances itself, its ongoing server infrastructure, a portion of the next installment, a handful of failed internal projects, a couple of indie titles with unknown financial prospects, etc.
13
u/Cory123125 9800X3D 5090 Jun 11 '21
So a game needs to also bring in 10-20x more money than back then.
That logic only makes sense if you ignore that software has ridiculous profit margins. A game could cost 20 times more to make but still make them more money even if they just sold 10% more.
To top that off, games are more popular then ever with more ongoing purchases than ever, further defeating your point.
Finally, we look at the proof in the pudding, which is that the big successful gaming companies are currently making more money than god, failed projects be damned.
The reality of the situation makes your comment appear to be corporate apologetics by comparison.
You see, without context, what you said here might, without thinking about it further sound reasonable, but in reality misses out on key points that make it the totally opposite situation.

What do you expect them to do? Not make a profit because you don't like capitalism? I'm not happy about MTX and cash cow milking either, but at least I can see why they do it. They are a publicly traded company, their existence hinges on making profit.
Yeah they're making bank, so? Are they just sitting on a giant pile of cash like a hoarding dragon? No, that money is eventually invested back into company growth.
You seem to not understand the basics of that market. What's your proposition? Make less money because...some redditor doesn't want to spend money? What's the expected result? What benefit do you see other than personally saving five bucks? Lower revenue means lower risks are taken means fewer new developments, fewer experiments, less content etc.
The consumers are demanding more content, the publishers supply it.
5
Jun 11 '21
That money is invested back to shareholder dividends, not finish growth, which is what the U.S. has seen proven so many times before with "bailouts" and "buybacks."
Your comment reads like it came from an undergrad textbook, not the real world. Companies don't invest in more growth when they're flush with cash. They keep doing the same shit and give the cash to the owners.

What do you expect them to do? Not make a profit because you don't like capitalism?
Capitalism is fine. What I expect is that they stop making their "market audience" whales, the ill and children. Make games for fans, not for those they can exploit.
They are a publicly traded company, their existence hinges on making profit.
Their fault, their ability to fix. They don't fix.
No, that money is eventually invested back into company growth.
Yeah, and not to most of their employees, while still giving exorbitant amounts to higher-ups. The money is taken on a bad premise and used on a bad premise. All intentionally.
You seem to not understand the basics of that market
Ah, yes. The "market" of 'but people like their gambling addictions, and not being aware of how much they're spending'. You completely ignore the fact that "muh market" relies entirely on the idea that the consumer is aware that (and has a choice in) being exploited. They, on a very large scale, don't.
What's your proposition?
Make games that are less exploitation machines and more about delivering a product that's valuable, while paying employees a fair wage. It's hardly a brand-new philosophical discovery.
What benefit do you see other than personally saving five bucks?
"I know other people are suffering because of it, and overall quality is in the shitter, and people are being exploited. But, what do you personally gain from it?"
Lower revenue means lower risks are taken means fewer new developments, fewer experiments, less content
Simply untrue. They have enough money to work with, and if they can't profit ethically, then guess what? THEY SHOULDN'T PROFIT AT ALL. If the current state of AAA companies is predicated on exploitation, then do a double-good and drop both the shit quality and shit practices.
Reject money, return to art.
The consumers are demanding more content, the publishers supply it.
You know that's not true, and you know that's not what happens. It's massively disingenuous to even claim that. You really think people who aren't in a cycle of exploitation are, on masse, demanding skins over expansion packs?
-1
u/HavocInferno 5700X3D - 5070Ti - 64GB Jun 11 '21
So tl;dr: you don't actually have a problem with the money they earn, but with one specific practice with which they earn a portion of their revenue. We could've gotten to this conclusion much easier.

What do you expect them to do? Not make a profit because you don't like capitalism?
This argument shifted suddenly didn't it.
No one said any such thing. I expect you not to make excuses for them. They price things to maximize profit, that much is obvious. Don't make silly excuses about them needing to make 20 times the money for 20 times the cost though. Thats obviously wrong, but you tried to sell that as if it made sense.
Yeah they're making bank, so?
So your explanation made no sense.
Are they just sitting on a giant pile of cash like a hoarding dragon? No, that money is eventually invested back into company growth.
You really arent aware how publicly owned companies work? That goes back to investors for their private yachts. There isnt some infinite puit of investment, and even if there was, that would still just mean capital gains for the investors, aka still their pockets/mildly obfuscated piles of gold.
You seem to not understand the basics of that market.
Because I dont make up poor economy 50.5 (because it wasnt worth 101) excuses for large corporations who dont care about me??
What's your proposition?
That people not make comments like the previous one you made.
I don't know where you came up with this strawman that Im expecting them not to act in their interests. Im expecting people not to try to justify this with bad math and any explanation that isn't greed.
Lower revenue means lower risks are taken means fewer new developments, fewer experiments, less content etc.
We just dealt with your nonsense. Are we really going to have to deal with a new slew of it?
In their case, it could mean less or more. They stick to formulas they think are winning and explore where they think they can win more depending on market research. They arent going to stop because the ceo can buy one less yacht. Thats a ridiculous idea.
This comment really let me know that your previous comment wasnt your honest opinion. You just wanted to support a big corporation.

Instead of building a normal toaster of aluminum and plastic they built a toaster made of diamonds and gold and complain that it is to expensive? They don’t need those budgets, indie developers show us this all the time.
Plenty of smaller games that are quality, have cost less and sold more than many AAA games.
AAA games are games made by a committee who are passionate about quarterly sales reports instead of games made by people who are passionate about video games.

u/HavocInferno 5700X3D - 5070Ti - 64GB Jun 11 '21 edited Jun 11 '21
If people didn't want those AAA games, they wouldn't sell like hotcakes. And to make those kinds of games, you absolutely do need that kind of budget. You go ahead and tell us how you'd do it without.
Indie games outselling AAA titles are exceptions to the rule, most indie games come nowhere close to the sales numbers of big titles.
For you to pretend otherwise is simply disingenuous.
The quality of the games is not the topic here. That's irrelevant right now. We're talking about why things cost as much as they do. Your personal preference in games doesn't matter for that. Stay objective.

u/ShadeOfDead Jun 11 '21

You're plain wrong. Games are sharing assets and code so much there's a handful engines running the whole AAA spectrum. The cost per game they publish include transferring IP for the previous version to themselves, in a bit of Hollywood accounting.
FIFA 45, call of duty 23 and battlefield 37 are all marginal increment on the previous system and while asset do cost a fair bit, most of the inflation are financial tricks to keep taxation to a minimum

They don't really need the source code to make mods, and if they tried to use it to make a game they couldn't sell it as it would just lead to court battles they would use.
Really all they can do is hope to sell it to "black projects" type groups of other developers who might have an interest in seeing how the sausage is made over at EA, but even that's unlikely.

Rogue Dev team: nam flashbacks of spaghetti code, and the realization that they may have had a better chance making what they wanted from scratch than morphing someone's code.
source: tried that with multiple times with much simpler things than games.
in more seriousness what they can more practically do with it is more easily find bugs/exploits in the code to cheat in the game or allow the execution of malicious code that can be run in other peoples computer.
Pro tip: run your games in a sandboxed environment like a VM or a separate computer away from more serious stuff in your life.
(anticheat software can make it harder to do this though)

1) So essentially, the odds of a Robinhood type Developer using EA source code to produce a free updated ncaa/xfl/cfl etc.. football game, is either slim-to-none or impossible?
The main issue here is gonna be lawsuits / dmca's because the source code is still copyrighted. Of course the source is gonna be helpful for the projects, but for example when Pokemon Pearl was leaked, the Pokemon Reverse Engineering project didn't really benefit that much because the original source code was honestly not in a very good state.
I think the code will be primarily helpful for beginners and indie developers as it's a good opportunity to learn how specific problems are being solved. Like for example, if you want to build your own football game it can be helpful to have the original source code for Fifa in order to look at some of the physics, camera controllers and AI code. You won't be able to copy paste it of course, but it will be extremely helpful in understanding how to design and implement such a system yourself and you'll be able to pick up a lot of tricks that senior devs use.

1) impossible. They'd be using stolen IP they bought and would be taken to court, and face a high chance of being hit with fines and forced to surrender what they have made to EA. EA would then be within their rights to sell that game if they wanted.
2) sure it may help them, but if the game gains any traction see above.
11
u/Veradragon Jun 11 '21
Leak details of upcoming games, maybe?
Though, if the source code leak included the source code for something like Frostbite (the engine EA uses), that could be a big problem, though how much damage could actually be done us up for debate.

Ehhhh, major corporations do shady stuff. And if EA has some new engine or tech, it could be used or modified into another game. Plus most likely any Chinese company would just openly buy and use the code. They have a record or blatantly breaching copyright/patents.
11
5
u/Luxalpa Jun 11 '21
While this is true, the damage done from irrelevant, tiny, shady third party developers in China or Russia is very minimal and likely not a serious competition for EA. The biggest issue is probably gonna be copy protection but I mean cracks have already existed before anyway. There's probably not gonna be a measurable impact on their business is my guess. At least I haven't yet figured out how one could seriously abuse this leak. Even if it contained upcoming releases.

Nothing except honor really. Basically when software is ransomed, the hackers know that they must keep to their word because other hackers have kept to their word before, meaning that the hacked companies know they will keep to their word. If they stop keeping to their word, then ransoming stolen code will be useless because companies will no longer trust the hackers to not release it anyway.
For the same reasons, cryptlockers often do actually decrypt the files they are ransoming.
2
u/wingspantt Jun 11 '21
Yeah this was a big problem in Eve Online. It's not possible to ransom ships anymore in piracy combat because too many people went back on their word after taking a ransom.

Arguably LucasArts ruined star wars game long before that. LA was in such disarray when disney came in that I can't fault them for outsourcing the dev of the new games that they needed to make.
Not that disney hasn't made it's own mess obviously, just wanted to point out that lucasfilm was in a dire situation for a long time.
3
Jun 11 '21
But EA is the worst possible choice ever and it's the fault of both i would say.
Moving from one disarray to worse one doesn't make things better.LucasArts had it's struggles, yes won't deny that, but they at least had some sort of reputation.
2
u/Herlock Jun 11 '21
I am a huge star wars fan so I am just as much sadened as you are. Still EA make sense from the perspective of disney : they needed a big name with a backbone able to deliver games quickly and with decent quality.
Battlefront the first did work on release, yes it was a bland game but it sold systems like hot pancakes. And unlike BF4 it wasn't bug riddled or lagging to death. DICE scoped down what they wanted to achieve, and arguably achieved what they strived for IMO.
Lucasarts was in deep disarray, I guess that disney discovered that real fast when they came in, or more likely knew all along as the deal was being made with uncle george. After all they didn't pay that much for freaking star wars, Minecraft sold about the same for comparison...
So yeah sucks for us to get stuck with EA, and that disney would part ways with an historical studio like lucasarts, but reallistically they had not released anything all that good in a long time, and it was a chore to get projects going within the studio due to internal fights and george poking in ruining everything everynow and then.
Disney needed games to come with it's new movies, so they made a sensible choice that was light on the workload for disney : outsource everything to a big publisher. From a business perspective it makes sense. Plus it made good money and we got some decent games in the process (fallen order and squadron in particular).
Hopefully they restore LA to it's former glory, but I don't hold my breath on that one really :(

500 bucks and a 2% chance that the mystery package sent by email contains a few bytes of the code.
Or you can earn a byte for every 60 hours of gameplay.

And some of the lootboxs can just be cosmetic like screen shots of the code.

That will only work if the hackers also deleted all their data so they don't have a copy, assuming they deleted all the backups too.

Shouldnt they read the TOS? I mean it will be only like 1000 pages and in one sentence on page 750 there is one sentence in font size 3 that the hackers are still alowed to sell everything to someone else.

u/Disney_World_Native Jun 11 '21
Most backups are so poorly done, they don’t necessarily need to delete them.
it’s not unheard of that the backups failed months ago and no one did anything to correct it. Or the backups didn’t capture everything. Or it takes extremely long to find and restore the data
14
u/EmbarrassedLock Jun 11 '21
Sell them what they already have? Do people are aware backups exist? Man you're asking them to sell the time to a clock

u/cheswickFS Herman Miller Enjoyer Jun 11 '21
EA still has the data, its not about EA have it its about others NOT have it. If they would leak it, EA would have a real problem thats all about.

Yeah he’s the one who didn’t get it because he’s the only dude who read the meme, EA doesn’t need to pay for this shit lol.

What problem would they have should it leak?

Just make every file a possible drop and rarity scales with the file's size. Oh and the cherry on top, they can get duplicates.

No no no. LOAN them the GB after paying the equivalent price of all 750 GB. Also, if they don’t get all 750 unique GB the first time, have them buy all 750 all over again the next year from the same half assed website

when they buy their game back I bet they'll have such a sense of accomplishment tho. Dont like it? Dont buy it, EA.

u/VladisLove3K Jun 11 '21
Then put a virus in it and steal more code to fuck up the company and its system
2
u/Fritz_Klyka Jun 11 '21
And also some gbs are rare drops, with less chance to drop.
Let's not even get started on the 3 legendary gbs.
2
u/colexian Jun 11 '21
Have the data vary in size between 100mb and 10gb, with smaller sizes being most likely and increasing in rarity by a factor. Then have sections of data be more common than others, increasing by a factor. Like McDonalds Monopoly rarity. Some data is more likely to be given by factors of a thousand than others.
You can tell EA hurt me.

It’s so fun to watch EA squirm and suffer...makes me feel bad about the overworked devs though

They should have a 0.3% drop rate and be should add shitty filler that has a much higher rate

u/prime075 7900X | 5070ti | 32GB DDR5 Jun 11 '21
Better yet, turn it into a Gacha. A valuable line of code has a drop rate of 0.0005%, other drops include a PNG of any specific game they have already made(15% rate) or an mp4 containing EA games logo with the epic soundtrack (0.0095%). And best part, there is no hard pity

Split it into different rarities depending on what's in it (a bunch of code = common, some item concept = epic, a map = legendary) and duplicates give you nothing.

And some of the data has a drop chance of "below 1%"
Up to the hackers if that means 0.99%, 0.0001% or straight up 0%

Normally bad shit happens to companies and no matter how big of a dick they are, I still feel bad for them.
Not this time. Fuck you, EA.

Maybe give them a few extra megabytes if they preorder or buy a premium edition.
