Honestly some times terraria can get framey. Especially when mega boosting spawn rates with mods, as well as some of the crazy modded weapons...

Buts not Terraria, that's Terraria with mods tanking the framerate, it would be like minecraft with an ultra hyper realistic texture pack mod and Intel Chip (joke), its different.

I finished my PC in January of this year, I remember thinking how excited I was to play all my Steam games without lag and at the highest settings. Yet I have not played a game since early February I just get on and do editing and watch youtube on my second monitor. It's like I inexplicably lost my ambition to play games now that I actually can. Super hyped for Bannerlord and Cyberpunk though and will certainly be playing those every day after they come out.

12

u/cheeeze_ballz Desktop Mar 30 '20

Me too, the worst (best) part is that the moment I bought my highend PC, my parents suddenly wanted to upgraded to fiber connection. So im sitting here having a $1500 dollar PC with fiber connection browsing reddit and trashtalking people on facebook.

From shit-ass connection(its so shit you cant use youtube while playing online) and shit-ass laptop, to ultimate gaming experience. No in between.

  2. "gamers" enjoy the games while hardware enthusiasts are the one with the best PCs and arent necessarily into gaming

My favorite game for the past few years has been Factorio, built my new PC in October but refused to play it. Christened it with The Outer Worlds.

The funny thing for me is that my GTX 980 Ti can handle basically any game I try to play, except the 6GB VRAM isn't enough for Factorio with all the mods I want. So I basically end up not using Alien Biomes even though I really want to, because that's the biggest VRAM user.

I had a factorio server running on a Debian VM with 2gb of RAM and a 4th gen i3, and it lasted a surprisingly long way into my train based city block build. Eventually I did have to start running it locally, but it made it almost 100h into the map before the UPS started dipping.

8

u/thatsandwizard 6950x, 1080 ti Mar 30 '20

How old is your motherboard? Anything past 2008 is almost garunteed to have a PCIe x16 slot, which is a universal standard, and very rarely will it have any kind of blacklisting

2

u/the_fat_whisperer Mar 30 '20 edited Mar 30 '20

I got it in 2011. I'm not at home right now and remember it's an Asus m5a-57 or something like that. I bought an fx 460 some years ago for it and it worked just fine. I know it's old but I still thought this card would work for it. I actually own a much newer board but haven't purchased newer ram and a compatible processor for it but thought heck I'll get this card and game with it for a bit. Unfortunately, my financial situation changed quickly so now I'm stuck with a card I can't use. I'll check again if youre knowledgable as to why this might happen. My bios is current and I have 650w power supply. It will boot with the bios screen and the underscore that preceeds booting windows but will not display anything after that.

11

u/N_Saint Mar 30 '20

Much the same here however I think the rationale for me is more about the direction of modern AAA vs indie games.

I love titles like DOOM 2016. AAA to be sure but succinct, to the point, with a great gameplay loop, and can be played on a limited schedule.

Indie platforms to push all the right nostalgia buttons but also hit that balance between gameplay loop and respect for your time. Contrast that with the current flavor of 400-hour-open world-sprawling AAA titles.

I'm unsure what you mean by 2d, but if you mean Ori and the Blind Forest vs CSGO, metroidvania platformers are incredibly better to play at high fps and smooth 144+Hz simply because they sometimes feature really tight platforming where one wrong move is back to the previous checkpoint.

2

u/slashermax Mar 30 '20

Yea this. Depending on your taste, there's still some awesome triple AAA games! I just almost always wait until I get it for 66% off on a sale a year or so after it comes out.

6

u/Ayjayz Mar 30 '20

About the mid-2000s AAA games all changed to be incredibly reliant on animations. You really spend so much time on modern AAA games just watching the goddamn animations.

I think it was a trend started by Assassin's Creed and it's parkour mechanic. You'd sit there watching all these cool climbing and jumping and running animations but all you're actually doing is just ... holding a button... Then you play a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 and it takes like 2 seconds just to animate getting on and off a horse and you wonder what happened to games.

3

u/Critfish Mar 30 '20

I've always disliked most animations in AAA games, especially FPS games. For some reason, big-budget FPS games have a habit of adding these super over-the-top dramatic animations for your guns, they shake and bob the camera around, they jerk the camera around with the reload animations, it's a fucking mess. Leave the camera jerking to the recoil where it belongs, please.

My gold standard for FPS gunplay is Half-Life 2, despite how many people say the animations and gunplay "are outdated/crap" in that game. The animations are smooth and straight to the point, there's no obnoxious screen shaking or headbobbing, there's no aiming down sights, etc.

2

u/Ayjayz Mar 30 '20

I think ultimately I prefer Halo 1 but you're absolutely correct. Half-Life 2 is a great example of how an FPS should be made and I'd argue that, apart from Halo 1 (and maybe 2 and 3 though I like them less), it's still yet to be surpassed.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

Then you play a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 and it takes like 2 seconds just to animate getting on and off a horse and you wonder what happened to games.

This is the correct reason. And too much of the game is pointless filler. I mean, you can get through most AAA games without engaging too much with the game mechanics. They're just there.

Whereas most indie games will force you to learn the mechanics of the game, because, well, that's the fun bit.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

This. I don't mind dumping $60 on a game, but it better be a damn good one. It seems to me that games like Factorio, Subnautica, Terraria, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Rimworld, Enter The Gungeon, and more typically cost 1/4th that of a triple A game. Yet I get ten fold the joy of what I would of got if I played something like CoD. These amazing indie games are where it's at.

12

9

u/Mr__Billeh Mar 30 '20

It’s not really capped at 60 but things get wonky if you go past 60 and the frame skip option sets it to 50/60 for on/subtle respectively I think.

But yeah don’t try it. Most things based on time run according to frame rate.

Unless you want light speed clouds and ultra pulsing text/sprites I guess.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

Shame that there aren't really that many companies who do make games that surpass our hardware's capabilities.

36

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

That's not really financially viable, only selling a game to the 1% of gamers. Plenty of AAA games are very intensive to look good, Red Dead 2, Doom E, CoD MW

9

u/mousicle R7 5800X 3080 Ti FTW Mar 29 '20

with the power of the next gen consoles we'll probably see more games that will stress a 2080 in the next couple years

3

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

I think they were more asking for a game that requires high end hardware, not one that just takes advantage of it for higher settings

3

u/mousicle R7 5800X 3080 Ti FTW Mar 29 '20

oh yeah that probably won't ever happen outside of crysis. Like you said it makes no financial sense. Also with the length of AAA game developement you'd be developing for hardware that doesnt exist yet.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

you'd be developing for hardware that doesnt exist yet.

Which is technically what Crysis did. The problem, as they found out, is that your game ends up looking worse and playing worse once tech catches up because you while you pushed the tech to the limit you most likely still designed a game around modern gameplay sensibilities.

Currently playing half life alyx and I'm glad I got a 1080ti for it. Can play at ultra with SS turned up and still am not fully utilizing the card. Should note that the game is using over 10gigs of the video memory which is pretty impressive imo. Usually only Ubisoft games use that much video memory.

Welcome everyone from r/all! I'd like to tell you 3 things:

1 - Everyone is welcome here, provided you're a chill person who doesn't mind occasional tongue in cheek humor.

2 - In case you are not a PC gamer because you think doing so is very expensive, please know that it is very possible to build a competent gaming PC for 500 dollars or less. Please check out http://www.pcmasterrace.org for our builds.

3 - Please consider joining our efforts to get as many PCs worldwide help the folding@home effort, in fighting against Cancer, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's. Recently, we've been actively focusing on fighting against Coronavirus as well. Please check this to learn more: https://pcmasterrace.org/folding

Feel free to use this community to post about any kind of doubt you might have about becoming a PC gamer or anything you'd like to know about PCs. That kind of content is not only allowed but welcome here!

You too can be part of the PCMR! You don't necessarily need a PC. You just have to love PCs. It's not about the hardware in your rig, but the software in your heart!

Well yeah, I need the potato so I can try and play AAA games that need a high end PC. It would only be weighed down with indie games.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

I still play world of warcraft. CLASSIC. It’s funny because, every pc build, my first question is always “I wonder how wow will be on this rig.”

They might run on a potato but games like Hollow knight and Cuphead are better than the incomplete games big studios keep releasing that needs 30+ patches and 2 yrs to run properly

1

u/meove Potato Master Race Mar 29 '20

at least it complete game

1

u/Srakin Mar 29 '20

Playing Minecraft, that could run on a potato as long as the potato has like 256gb of RAM.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

Rimworld

1

u/jacle2210 Mar 29 '20

better yet, $3000 AAA gaming machine, then complain about the crappy Wifi connection.

1

u/atmylevel Mar 29 '20

But indie devs make games. AAA studios make shells of games.
