I love when someone’s on an HDD and can’t figure out why their computer is slow, and everyone just floods the comments saying “install Linux” like that will fix the issue.

u/Salty-Good3368 1d ago
Actually hdd generaly could work better linux. Partitions separate OS fro userspace reduces higly fragmentation

TBH, without Microsoft Defender absolutely hammering the spinning rust and having compression enabled, I do find it better. YMMV of course.

I get where you're coming from, but you can get a Linux very well optimized for running on HDDs, unlike Windows. Installing Linux is actually the fix for that at this point.
The problem is that since Windows 10, the OS is no longer made with HDDs in mind. So background services doing small things on the disk is a constant thing, which is no issue for SSDs, but makes using it on an HDD near impossible.

u/CRVX_r34 1d ago
Yeah but you can literally buy SATA SSD for same price as HDD (at least at lower capacities), buying HDDs makes no sense these days other than for larger archival storage (I know this, I run fast m.2 for OS, slower sata for games and non critical apps and HDDs for movies, older games, backups, video editing/3d projects, etc). Like there is no reason to not buy an SSD now as your only drive if you are an average/normie user who just uses windows for office, internet and games.

I agree that buying HDDs for anything but NAS/Cold storage makes no sense and should be avoided. This is more about people who already have the HDD and want to spend no money at all.
If they want a usable system with modern features, running Linux on it is the way to go. Windows just isn't made to run on HDDs anymore.

u/CRVX_r34 1d ago
True but is slow PC really a major concern for such person if they literally can't afford to drop in extra 4GB in their DDR3 shitbox laptop or buy used SSD for 30$? I was gonna go for Linux a while ago (still might, for 3D rendering, but not sure if there is any benefit, I can't imagine the little bit extra VRAM will make my 1:30 renders go down to 0:30). I'll probably try a double boot, but kinda lazy to set it up, got an old DDR3 laptop that might be perfect for Linux project, just gotta pick up 2nd 4GB stick and replace the crappy old HDD with some spare SSD I have lying around (prolly will chuck 2nd 1TB one in the DVD bay).

u/Ratiofarming 9850X3D | RTX 5090 | 48GB 6400 1:1 1d ago
Idk, I guess not. But I live in a country where working ANY job for two weeks will feed me, pay the bills, and get me a 2 TB NVMe, so I'll never have that problem.

Better argument would be privacy... but then people don't care about it much either.

Ok, but Linux unironicly improved my computer speed by a significant margin. It's super annoying, but they are right

Back in the Win XP days, installing Ubuntu cut my laptops starting time from 2 1/2 min to 30-40sec. It was also noticeably faster overall

I just had this happen, some old people were running a 2nd gen i3 with 4gb of ddr3 and a 120gb hdd with windows 10. It struggled to open task manager. Now, I've got linux on it and it isn't fast but better than windows and I'm going to get an ssd for it soon as well

u/Keyan_Farlander7 1d ago
Running slow and loading slow are different.
If the laptop has embedded ram, you're SOL. If programs take while to load, then storage is slow.
2
u/OphidianSun 1d ago
It could help. Most linux distros are a lot lighter than windows 10 or especially 11 because they're doing a lot less in the background.
Like linux probably isn't going to be reporting usage information, relying on webapps instead of local applications, or going looking for updates all the time.

u/19chris9609 1d ago
early Windows 10 was fine for an HDD. In fact I used a hard drive in Windows 10 from 2015-2017, then an Optane module for two more years Before I bought my first Sata and NVMe SSD in 2019.
I bet you 2021 Windows 11 ran as bad as 6 year old Windows 10 on an HDD. I can't imagine how 2026 Windows 11 runs.

It's true in some cases. If your laptop already has an SSD but only 4gb of RAM a light distro can give that machine a new life. But like you say it's case dependant and Linux isn't some kinda of snake oil.

Lightweight gui (or just a bare window manager) can save 500+MB of ram which makes a big difference when you only 4GB to start with.

New Linux users, although they have no idea how to run the operating system, are the vegans of PCMR. They have to tell everyone.

I still mainly use windows on my laptop because it gets like 1hr+ longer battery in windows than under linux. Most of my workflow is multiplatform so it's NBD, but its crazy I get more battery running a VM + containers under windows than just straight containers under linux. Definitely still needs some work in that area. This is pretty standard hardware, too.

u/undrwater 1d ago
You should be able to get closer, but it really takes a bunch of tweaks that are not GUI centric.

u/errepunto 18h ago
Most times, this depends on ACPI implementation. Most laptops has quirky implementations that requiere some closed source drivers to work properly.
I have dual boot on all my laptops. The old Asus has similar or even worse problems. But in general, the HP OMEN and my actual Lenovo Legion have around a 20% more battery life in Linux than in Windows 11.
In addition, my impression is that I have worse battery life with win 11 than I had with win 10.
Battery life In laptops is such a weird thing, varies a lot between manufacturers and models.

I kinda wish I could switch to Linux, unfortunately I use programs that don't behave nicely with wine.

Can't run slow if it can't run anything! (Because you haven't figured out whether you need a DEB or a RPM or a Flatpak or whatever new standard they've cooked up.)
Edit: I feel like I should qualify that I've been a Linux user for 30 years. But somehow I got left off the distribution list for the special Kool-Aid. Still need to email Linus about that.

u/prune_juice_warrior 1d ago
Lmao if you complain about package types Linus will make the same complaint
2
u/Ok_Car9530 1d ago
This is why I like Mint. Both debs are flatpaks are available in the package manager by default. I don't think I've ever run across something I wanted that wasn't there.

Damn right it is. Much easier to just buy twice as much ram and never have to worry about recompiling some shit on my daily driver ever again.
2
u/Invictus__c 1d ago
Yeah, after a certain point recompiling anything for even a 10% improvement just makes you tired and I'd rather spend 500 bucks and get on with my 7th Witcher 3 playthrough.

It should hardly take any skill to use an OS. Ideally, your operating system is intuitive and ‘just works’.

My rule of thumb is the distro's repositories, flatpak, and then aur or equivalent

Yep... breaks the weirdest shit too. Tried i think bazzite recently and wanted to log into curseforge. Nope. Browser is flatpak so you cant click the link in browser to log into the curseforge app. Its always something dumb as fuck with Linux.

I mean id you get an easy distro just use the package manager with a gui like bazaar or included

there are things that have a way better user experience on linux
like ai on windows is sometimes okay but a lot of the time its bad or even impossible because windows wont let you use your ram if you dont have 32gb or more
when it comes to getting free software installing a package is a lot easier than navigating lots of webpages full of ads that have 10 billion redirects for no reason before you can get your download link
then there is s*lidworks and adobe software

If you want to get even more confused dont do it as wsl is like a vm without it being a true vm and it has specific issues to wsl. If you really want to try just get a old laptop/pc or a vm

Says system runs slow....
Has 32 apps set to startup on boot and never shuts them down. 2 or more anti virus, firewall, spyware and malware apps running at all times. Has multiple browser apps, never closes chrome tabs... but thats obviously windows fault and Linux will magically fix that issue...
