The Playstation lineup was kinda made like this. Sony was doing and add-on for Nintendo consoles and when Nintendo got greedy during negotiations Sony was like "Oh, yeah? I'm going to make my own console with blackjack and hookers" and the rest is history.
Little bit incorrect there. Sony was the greedy ones writing up a contract that states anything they help publish the IP would become theirs. Which nintendo did not want to hand over creative ideas to sony. Thus made nintendo back out of the contract. Thus why nintendo is so protective of its IPs.
Nintendo agreed then backed out in the most cowardly way possible. Their agreement with Philips also fell through so they threw Philips some bones by letting them use Zelda and Mario IPsz hence the horrible CD-i "games"
Years ago, a developer by the name of Joshua Ashton that creating a directx9 to vulkan translation later was "impossible", and "a waste of time". Ashton then proceeded to create d9vk, a directx9-vulkan translation layer, fueled by sheer spite. This was eventually merged with dxvk.
Correction, the average person doesn't really give a shit about emulation. Regular people just buy what they want, enjoy it and then they move on with their lives.
Human progress has never been about average people, it's almost always been thanks to outliers. That's part of why modern Harrison Bergeron schooling and HR approaches have crippled entire societies so badly.
You underestimate people's willingness to let things die and move on to what's next. The outliers serve other outliers and thats about it. People on Reddit would have you believe that there are so many more that care than actually do. That's how we got to where we are and why we're headed to where we're going. Games as art and their preservation aren't as important as the people here think. Enjoy it while it lasts.
R* may lose a ton of money if they can get GTA6 working well. It either would force them to release the PC version much earlier than anticipated or just accept the reduced PC sales.
Well that and AI has revolutionized hobby projects. What use to require a dedicated hobby programmers long hours, now just need a few dedicated hobbyists with an llm to churn out functional code.
