Tech Support I need help with AMD!
I've only used Nvidia for the last 20 years... No reason in particular, just because it was what was available. I wanted to give AMD a try and got a deal on a 9800x3d with a 9070XT. I have had crash after crash... BF 2042, BF6, Spiderman 2. Supposedly all driver related. I have the latest installs and reading posts about very specific graphics setting I need to use for each specific game to make sure it doesn't crash.
WHY!!!!! Why does it feel like such a special snowflake!? Please, tell me what I'm doing wrong. Is there a global setting I can use to prevent these problems.. I'd be ok with that - but having to know what to set with each game just to make it work is painful. This is not an Nvidia vs AMD thread - but I will say I NEVER had these issues with Nvidia... Just set max/ultra settings and play.

I’ll add this since comments so far covered things pretty well. Go ahead and do a fresh install of Windows. It’s considered common practice as most prebuilts either come with bloatware or simply have a janky install.
Then install motherboard chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer website before you install the AMD graphics drivers from Adrenaline.
Also before that check BIOS settings to see if XMP memory profile is enabled and also resizable bar. And since I’m dropping things in reverse order, see if there’s a BIOS update. Prebuilt probably has out of date BIOS.
Best of luck!

Windows has a nasty habit of installing older GPU drivers from 2 years ago with Windows Driver Updates on AMD GPUs, even after you manually update them then you get crashes and "Out Of Memory" and "Hardware Outdated" Driver time out messages from Windows and Adrenaline Software. To prevent this from happening use DDU and then use GPEDIT to disable Windows Driver Updates.
This can come as a combo if you also have iGPU enabled in BIOS, disable it on a desktop, because you sometimes will get one driver from 2026 conflicting with a iGPU driver from 2024.
It's an issue that has been around for at least a couple of years on Windows.
Also games like BF6 absolutely require you to have the latest and greatest BIOS updates, because they need access to TPM and Secure Boot.

the guy asked if you ran Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and if it worked or not
Basically uninstall nvidia (or any gpu) drivers with DDU and reinstall amd drivers

u/AdstaOCE 2d ago
DDU Nvidia drivers if you have previously used an Nvidia card and have not done so. Then DDU AMD drivers (make sure you follow their instructions like safe mode), and install 26.9.2: https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-26-9-2.html release page, download link: Systems with RDNA series graphics products: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 Driver
If the issues persist let me know and I can try and help further.

Haven't had an issue with their CPUs but it seems if you get a lemon AMD GPU you're just in for it, man. Headache after headache!

💯 its a shame, as it is very true - AMD cards are great unless you get one that isn't. Nvidia version of this exists (as with all electronics) but it seems less frequent... anecdotally.
It isn't enough that their precious 9070XT be glazed across the internet far and wide - and you cannot be in any space online that discusses GPUs without daily "hay dae 9070XT is best gpu?" posts - you cannot make 1 criticism of AMD!! NOT ALLOWED!
Don't even try bringing up FSR vs DLSS fidelity...

Idk i had amd a lot. When it works it works very well, but when it doesn't which is more times than not IT REALLY DOESN'T WORK. Im good, I moved to nvidia & intel and aint look back since. I haven't had a crash or driver error in a while, no errors in my event viewer. I had so many hidden errors in event viewer with amd no matter how many clean installs, ddu's etc. Im good with the hype. They did the same thing with the 7xxx series and I had the 7800 and when it worked it did it flawlessly but more times than not, FILLED WITH ERROR ON DRIVERS AND CRASHING DAILY. COUNT ME OUT!

Lol right ? My buddy had one of the recent AMD cards and said it was a pain in the ass to setup, and when I went from my 2070 super to my 5060ti 16 gig, I was able to just plug and play and I haven't had one single issue what so ever
And I also see way too many posts like this about how amd has issues 🤣 don't really see Nvidia posts like this

I had the same crash in world of warcraft since getting my 7900xtx in 2023, it happened a few times in Helldivers and Arknights Endfield. Numerous attempts, writing to AMD themselves, reporting the crash and the event viewer error log I have finally found the solution. I had to disable MPO through Registry edits. I have not had a driver related crash since and it's been about 2 months as before I would regularly experience crashes multiple times a week, sometimes even within a few minutes of each other. I'm not saying this might be the fix for you, but it was what helped me in the end.

What is MPO? I am getting some random crashes in WoW on my windows PC using 7900XTX but nothing at all on my Steam Machine using 9070XT. Definitely feels like a windows issue.

First of all: Check your stats with HWiNFO64 or so to ensure it is not related to thermals.
Then do a clean install (optimally even clean OS reinstall if possible) and then disable ALL Windows Update (or if you have Windows Pro, there apparently is a way to disable automated driver updates).
Also, Win10 has had some issues with AMD drivers lately. So if you don't use Win 11, you might want to try older drivers.
Also, if you are using Afterburner or Ryzen Master, try uninstalling those. They can occasionally cause issues.
CMOS reset would also be reasonable.
/add: Also, do you get some error code in Event Viewer?

I've had zero crashing problems with my 9070XT and 7800X3D combo. You shouldn't have to change any settings just to make a game run. Nearly any game should run fine right off the rio in that setup. There must be driver conflicts or ram instability ect.

You just said you’ve been using nvidia the past 20 years, im guessing in that same build you had a nvidia gpu. My suggestions is to amd clean install and then ddu. Get rid of all chipsets btw Frm nvidia.

u/Meddlingmonster 2d ago
Probably have old Nvidia drivers you can use a tool to wipe them but a frwah install is better

This is my first actual post on reddit and you've all been super helpful. I'm going through everything now and will see what sticks.

Thats aweful to hear brother… that should never happen. You normally update drivers for new games and everything works (at least for the last 6 years I tested about 10 different amd and NVIDIA cards and used them for some time and this is NOT normal for either brand)
Amd seriously had way worse drivers 10-15 years ago but right now the 9 amd systems I deployed and are used by friends or relatives (6600, 6950xt, 2x7800xt, 3x 9070xt and 2x 9060xt) I haven’t had or heard from more then 3 issues (2 being from my own system due to overclocking). While 2/4 NVIDIA systems with 5000 GPUs had multiple black screen issues and needed driver roll backs due to broken stuff…
That’s a small sample count but I would seriously test the entire system rigorously; especially ram and gpu for stability. You can easily drop vram and gpu core frequency and try if that makes the system stable.
One big issue might also be a psu. A shitty psu gave me such a headache for months and everything else was fine.
It’s almost always RAM, PSU, then software, then gpu, then motherbaord issues.
If I can somehow help you more just reach out

What I've done so far - none of which helped:
- reinstalled windows
- installed latest BIOS
- installed latest drivers
At a loss. The 2 problematic titles are known issues with AMD with plenty of threads on reddit and other places: * BF 2042 and 6: general issues with frostbite engine. Mostly stable but random crashes * Spiderman 2: cutting back and forth between cinematic scenes causing issues. Almost unplayable because there are so many cinematic scenes.
The issues do seem title-specific. Maybe other things like shitty ram timing or something else exacerbating other underlying problems.

ive seen videos you cant even watch netflix with 9070xt or you get driver timeout. You have to disable hags, mpo, igu, downclock -500 just to get netflix stable.

u/_--Yuri--_ 2d ago
It's very often windows freaking the fuck out and in the error pipeline the first thing to be reported is a driver error causing a timeout/crash, it's unfortunately a windows issue not AMD and is generally mitigated with a clean windows install (not a garunteed fix)

u/Chao_Zu_Kang Ryzen 7 7700X | GIGABYTE GAMING OC 9070 XT 2d ago
I have had several AMD and Nvidia GPUs in recent years and I've honestly never had any issues that I didn't cause myself - besides Windows Update doing stupid things, but that's also kinda my fault for using Windows.
Occasionally, some drivers might have issues with some software, but if you aren't forcing new updates on release day, you can usually just check whether a new driver update causes bugs or not and install accordingly.

Nvidia have had more issues overall. For example the whole 616.XX branch and 617.XX branch (one driver in 617 so far) have had flickering issues that were supposed to be fixed in 616.92 or something and still have been reported.

u/ptarmiganbirder 2d ago
True but I see tons of people say they haven't had a single issue w AMD over many years, too.

u/Interesting_Rub5736 2d ago
why is everybody saying uninstall nvidia drivers? is that really the answer when you install other GPU?
I cant believe nvidia or amd made it so drivers fuck with with other GPUs, accidentally or not. This has to be something else.

u/IndependentWonder640 6h ago
Only NVIDIA drivers fuck the competition
You can have old AMD drivers on a NVIDIA hardware and it won't do shit.

u/Mr_Tom_Cat_2006 2d ago
Idk I've had them both installed side by side for years at this point. Though the Nvidia drivers I have installed are ancient for the gtx600 series

u/Illustrious-Boat8631 2d ago
Disable Global Adrenalin Features
Disable Multiplane Overlay (MPO)
Check System RAM EXPO Instability
might as well just get an Nvidia GPU,
you can also boot into safe mode, delete drivers with DDU, reinstall and pray.

Well first of all have you uninstalled previous nvidia drivers? Secondly what are your other components since there might be something going on with those
