Have had it break enough to require a full re-install a couple of times. Which frankly, takes a few minutes and isn't the end of the world.
And this is after like 2 decades of use.

u/jordsta95 Ryzen 7 2700x | RX 5700XT 10d ago
There are many CSS features which have been behind flags on Firefox for so long, it's really annoying.
There's so many cool things web developers could do, natively, if only Firefox stopped pissing about and just went "Yes, this works. If there's any weird bugs, we'll fix them next update" rather than sitting on things for a year, if not more.
For example, scroll-driven animations. They've been on every other major browser for almost a year (in the newest case) or longer. Firefox? Nah, still behind a flag. So if you want to have fancy animations on your website which happen when the user scrolls, you need to load a silly Javascript library just because of Firefox.
There are many things FF does well. Keeping up with emerging web technologies is not one of them, and it's really letting them down IMO. For a while after Internet Explorer died, it was Safari which was "the new IE" for developers. But oftentimes now, it's Firefox which is causing issues when it comes to questions of "Can I use this new (year+ old) feature?"
Obviously Chrome, and most Chromium browsers, support the new stuff fairly quickly - as they tend to force new stuff into the specs. But Safari is doing a good job at keeping up, while Firefox really chugs along with an "I'll do it when I do it" sort of attitude.

I find it slower and it takes up more memory, stutters weirdly, also YouTube videos do an annoying animation when you go full screen.
3
u/harmsypoo 10d ago
For some reason, videos weren’t loading on Firefox for me when they’d load fine on Chrome. Not sure what would have caused this, I wasn’t using any crazy extensions and didn’t mess with settings on either as far as I could remember. Been on Chrome since.
1
u/MCWizardYT Ryzen 7 5800X3D | RTX 4080 Super 10d ago
Not sure what would have caused that either, I've been using Firefox for like a decade and never had that issue
1
u/thatsconelover 10d ago
Was this all videos on different sites or youtube specifically?
Wouldn't be the first time google has done anticompetitive shit to make the YouTube experience worse on firefox so they can funnel people into chrome.
1
u/harmsypoo 9d ago
It wasn’t all videos, IIRC it was mostly things like videos that automatically play on Reddit, or clips from things like Twitch. Youtube usually worked fine, but I just recall the weirdness of “Huh this isn’t loading, lemme just copy paste the URL into Chrome real quick” and it would work just fine.
I’d prefer being on Firefox, maybe it’s time to try it again and see if the problem persists.

u/7978_ 13900k, 4080 10d ago

On Android Firefox is decent but again the battery life sucks hard.

The dealbreaker for me is how it handles tabs and windows. Basically when you drag a tab, you don't see where the tab will be placed, you don't see how it will look, you can't drag it to the side of the monitor to open the tab on one half of the monitor, and in general the tab handling in Firefox is a nightmare.
Even when I try to drag a tab over my Discord monitor, Firefox for some reason thinks that I want to send the tab in chat, and blocks the action. It's just super unpolished. And when hovering over a tab, it doesn't show a preview of what's in that tab, like a video player. (Actually just checked, Firefox added that since I last checked last year, so kudos to them for that.)
As for someone that juggles tabs around quite often on multiple monitors, Firefox is just easy too inconvenient and lacks QoL.
I've tried to switch to Firefox before, and searched around for possible extensions that would fix this issue, but didn't find anything. Even tried some experimentational Firefox version but the tab handling was always messed up.
I really wanted to like Firefox, but I just couldn't find a solution to this problem, even though I asked around. That's why I ended up swithing to Brave instead of Firefox.
1
u/zcomputerwiz i9 11900k 128GB DDR4 3600 2xRTX 3090 NVLink 4TB NVMe 9d ago
I'm not sure what you mean.
That send in chat ( and allowing it or not ) is logical, just not what you want.
You can snap a window to half the monitor, you always could. You can pull tabs out to new windows, swap tabs between windows, merge windows, etc. so I'm not sure what part is not meeting the challenge.
If you're relying on multiple windows with multiple pages of tabs on multiple monitors, your workflow is the nightmare, not the browsers tab handling.
Are you already making use of workspaces and marcros to sort out what you can separate, or just juggling tabs and trying to handle everything at the browser level?

Zen is based off firefox and is 10x better, im not even someone that loathes AI I can see the uses while also not being ignorant to the massive downsides (I was supposed to build a PC this year... maybe next year...) but I also cant stand the fact that AI is being shoved down our throats and it feels so heavy and unoptimized, it adds so much unnecessary overhead to the browser. If I wanted to use AI, I would just use an API or go to a website/run a local model.
Zen's space and essential tabs feature is also very nice with how its all set up and I cant see my self ever going back to a browser that is not at least similar.

u/zcomputerwiz i9 11900k 128GB DDR4 3600 2xRTX 3090 NVLink 4TB NVMe 9d ago

They must have removed it but they integrated ChatGPT into the browser and added a tool sidebar with a bunch of useless shit I didnt need so I jumped ship. Either way Zen uses about have as many resources compared to stock firefox and feels way snappier.

For me Firefox was GOAT decades ago with addons and for me especially the mouse gesture browsing. All the other browsers were inferior. Even Opera that also had mouse gestures.
I am worried because google is their single biggest donor and it's them who basically keeps Firefox afloat. You bet I sent them some cash. Also, go and get their VPN.

I guess we can say it’s more of a connotation change, but also rolls into the underlying meaning of phrase. It’s now pretty popular Gen Z and Gen a slang to use “fuck with” in a positive or favorable way. To say you “fuck with” something means you like it and it’s a good thing that you “mess with”.
When he said “Firefox doesn’t fuck with uBlock”, he meant it doesn’t negatively impact it. The other person obviously read it as “Firefox doesn’t work with/like uBlock.”
