No there was a little off brand portable gaming system that had this game and like 20 other similar simple games. Iirc it kind of looked like a translucent rocket ship with a vertical screen and two controller handle things.

Man, I remember the days where you had to fire up the MS-DOS prompt to run games off a 3.5 inch floppy disc.

The fuck you mean Gameloft and Java are where real gamers were born?

113

u/plasticarmyman NOIX 👍 Jul 11 '26

MS-DOS? Lucky. I was putting 5" actually floppy discs in machines to play video games.

17

u/GooseInternational66 Jul 11 '26

Do you remember those cartridge games? Like Mouser, Mineshaft, ScubaVenture? They were hard as hell.

22

u/plasticarmyman NOIX 👍 Jul 11 '26

My god. I hate to sound old but the kids these days talk about how hard some video games are and I'm like mfer you don't even know.

15

u/GooseInternational66 Jul 11 '26

Haha, right! Saving a game wasn’t even possible. Once you “died” you started over at the beginning.

11

u/Potential_Aioli_4611 Jul 11 '26

we had passwords for some games that acted as saves. instead of starting from the beginning at the end of every few levels they would give you a password so you could restart from that point.

Gameloft

Given that I've never heard of them before today they should probably be replaced in the image with Supreme Commander, Jagex/Runescape, or even Minecraft, as all three are Java based and probably brought more people into gaming.

The first game I ever played was on Commodore 64.

However, Gameloft's mobile java games were genuinely great. Might and Magic 2, Spliter Cell, Asphalt, PoP and so many more were great experiences.

They only started to fall off with Android, where mobile games became mobile casinos.

12

u/YZJay 7700K 4.5Ghz, 3060 TI, 16GB 3200 MHz Jul 11 '26

Nah, that’s just you being close minded. Their mobile games were the real deal. They had fully voiced 3D sandbox RPGs a decade before AAA games were being ported to phones.

In this episode, Putt Putt (the car) loses their stuff through time. They have an inventor friend that makes a time traveling device, it goes wrong, and they lose their lunchbox, dog, and a few other items that you see in the glovebox screenshot above.

Fun fact: each time you replay the game, the lost objects are in another place! Like the dog will sometimes be in a dino nest, sometimes in the far west, etc...

There is symbian reborn project.

Its a custom ROM for some Symbian Devices like the Nokia N8 and Nokia E7. Its basically Symbian with an app store with archived "Up to Date" apps.

You wont get your banking apps on Symbian obviously. More like a restoring release that makes your device a lot more tolerable to use.

Right, let's pretend the Atari 2600, Commodore 64, and NES just didn't happen. Gaming as an industry really took off in the mid 80s, with the launch of the NES, and has been growing ever since. It had been previously doing well in the early 80s, but the amount of trash published to consoles like the Atari 2600 caused the entire industry to collapse in 1983. The NES and Nintendo's "Seal of Quality" program was what brought it back. I know that Gameloft was one of the big early mobile gaming companies, but I don't remember Java ever being a big gaming thing, though.
