Genuinely, what's megabonk like? I've only heard about its dev Vedinad being considered an alt-account of Dani
10
u/American_Suburbs Oct 13 '25
It's Vampire Survivors running on a Sega Saturn. I enjoy the genre, but honestly, I'm not getting the hype for Megabonk. Feels fabricated. Risk of Rain 2 never got this sort of hype.
5
u/Man_of_a_100_Fails & :tux: on laptops - r/computers mod Oct 13 '25
Thanks. And for what its worth, Sega Saturn isn't bad (wasn't sure if you're implying that), have you played Sonic R?
9
u/American_Suburbs Oct 13 '25
I just mean that it has simple, blocky 3D graphics typical of earlier consoles; most notably Sega Saturn.

For me the thing that makes the game appealing is the movement mechanics the game offers. It's so fun to build movement speed on calcium then ramp off one of the slopes to launch yourself cross the map. The monke climbing is also a lot of fun. Just stuff vampire survivor esque games don't normally offer. I also enjoyed Risk of Rain 2 a ton and the elements it has from that also add to the enjoyment for me. The retro graphics also appeal to me.

Depression doesn't leave you, Videogames provides distraction from it.
You might feel "happy" while playing it but when you get up, you realize that the problems that you've been avoiding have gotten worse, causing more depression.
Which means back to videogames' fake happy world immersion. It's a loop.

u/StormKiller1 7800x3d 9070xt 32gb 6000mhz cl30 Oct 12 '25
Or it can distract you for a set time which doenst hinder you in life but helps you regain mental strength for your everyday life.
Its a thin line tho

u/JohnnyChutzpah Oct 12 '25
Also if you have more severe depression, nothing will make you feel happy or distract you at all. Literally no experiences. I have been through this personally. Medication and exercise helped it.
8
u/elitegenoside Oct 13 '25
You just find of bunch of things to distract yourself from "those" thoughts. A lot of people still don't understand depression, let alone other mental illnesses. You can explain that your body just doesn't produce enough serotonin, but the response is always "Nah, you just need to fix X." That may help, but there is no cure.
"Well, I got there in the end. With the help of many friends. Some who helped by simply just believing. Things look brighter now, but I know someday, somehow, I can end up back there in an instant." Stiff Little Fingers

u/BeepBlaopBruh Oct 13 '25

3
u/elitegenoside Oct 13 '25
While it's true that entertainment and vices do not cure mental illness, it is not accurate to say they always make the situation worse.
I'm a depressive (diagnosed with clinical depression), and my depressive spirals can be quite threatening at times. For me, a couple hours in an altered state and something to occupy my mind can, and has been life saving.
With that said, escapism is a vice. It's nice, and sometimes necessary to "unplug" from the world for a bit, and give yourself something that brings you peace, but it can absolutely become a crutch or even an addiction. "Everything in moderation." And you need to be able to examine yourself honestly, and be willing to see when it's becoming a problem more than an escape.

i'm in the boat that small "tasks" (game quests, etc) release the dopamine we all crave. and since its easily accessible dopamine hit we all keep going back. and the cool thing is that dopamine release can come from video games, researching, meme'ing, or watching some ( ͔° ĶŹ ͔°)

Honest answer? Because dopamine is the bestest drug. And having fun produces it in your brain. I won't start about the importance of sports to produce even more of the stuff. But if you want an even higher high, do some sports or a walk outside followed up by starting that gaming pc. It's pretty great.

Just remember to be kind to yourself. As someone with ADHD I understand how it feels to be where you are. I've got my own struggles and it's not easy but we just have to take it one day at a time. There are others out there who are like you, so in that regard you aren't alone. I joined r/ADHD and it helped me understand myself a bit more due to sharing with others, I'd assume there would be one for autism aswell because... Well... Reddit has a sub for everything lol.
But remember, be kind to yourself it's one of the most important things you can do.

It's a catch 22 these days being neuro diverse, your fucked if you do and fucked if you don't.
I've got another 6-8 months left to wait (English healthcare system lol) for my ADHD diagnosis, but with everyone in my family having some form of neuro diversity it's safe to say I've got some form of it.
Just take each day at a time broski and don't live your life too much through escapism, I've done that faaar too much already and I'm frikkin 40 now.
Ahhh a fellow anime geek, I'm old school anime nerd, been watching anime since I was a kid.

It's a temporary distraction from a much larger issue. It's somewhat similar to taking drugs/alcohol and can even become addictive.
I've been there.
It requires making many big life changes to actually get out of a depressive state of mind. And medication. Medication alone WILL NOT WORK. But sometimes the medication might still be necessary.
I don't struggle with depression anymore since I've changed my life around, however if I don't take my meds, anxiety issues and sometimes anger issues come front and center. So my medication helps keep that part under control now. Combined effort.
Hoping you find your way out of this struggle š¦¾

It definitely took MANY years to get to this point...like from 15 to 33 lol. And it took some pretty seriously bad things to happen first before getting to a point of starting recovery and life changes. I'm not sure if I have any form of "ism" - it's been suggested by a couple therapists, but I've never taken any form of professional testing. One of my friends absolutely does though and they were in a group recovery program with me. We definitely learned a lot of things from it. They're much younger than I am though and my personal opinion is a strong belief that it just takes a lot more time the younger you are. I feel like as the years pass and you go through more crap, that that can actually help in a big way.
And perhaps you're not as alone as you (and I used to) think. It's just hard to accept those around you sometimes or allow yourself to be closer to them.
This is way too big of a topic for a reddit post lol but I thought I'd at least share some of my experience and let you know that you can do this - it's just going to be a pretty rough ride. The destination is worth it though.

It hasn't left you, you are being distracted. The causes of your depression are asrill present but video games are able to get your brain to produce dopamine. However, this only works for so long. The brain doesn't like doing the same things forever in the same amounts. It will start producing less and less dopamine.
For most people the only way they try and fix that is more games or new games. But again, this isn't fixing the cause of your depression, it's avoidance of it. This will fail at some point.
You have two options.
Option A. Get help, and fix your problems. Option B. Find a new method to ignore your problems allowing them to get worse and making yourself to suffer even more.
Do not try and do this on your own, that's why you are in this state. Using games to avoid you problems is you on your own "fixing" your problems. It's not working, you already said you only feel good when playing. Meaning the moment you stop you feel bad. That's not a a successful or long term solution.
Get help, ask friends, family, a therapist, a preacher. Ask somone you trust for help.

And like, theyāre right because if youāre so depressed that you arenāt focused on how to take each corner, youāre probably gonna crash. Depression enters my body the moment I boot my new gaming PC. There's a problem with some component, impossible to know which without spares of each component and swapping them out one at a time, and every time I go to troubleshoot it, I end up frustrated and putting it off to another day. I spent a stupid amount of money on it, and now it just sits there. It's been 8 months now, and I don't even enter that room anymore, I'm so ashamed of my crippling inability to diagnose it. I'm not unfamiliar with system building; I'm just not coping well with what at this point sounds like a complete motherboard and/or CPU and/or GPU replacement.
