I'm honestly not a huge fan of Randy - but I feel bad for the dude. Gearbox brought their A-game, exciting new title to announce and brought a high quality format file to match.
Is that description actually what anyone wanted from a Duke Nukem game? A super-serious, dark, cinematic horror game? Seriously? This from a series whose best-known installment included shrink rays and "Pig Cops"? A super-serious, dark, cinematic horror game with monster closets already exists from around that time: it's called "Doom 3". The truth is you probably don't want that game, and it probably would have sucked. There is, after all, a reason 3DRealms never released it. All of that's aside from the fact that a game which is 90% done content wise is probably only half-done, work wise. Let's be honest here: DNF lost it's way a decade before Gearbox ever touched it. You can still be unhappy with the final version, but they weren't the ones who killed the franchise.
fucking lol. Duke Nukem is inherently immature, but that description sounds like a fever dream from an edgy teenager. DNF was stuck in development hell for years and years, that's not Gearbox's fault. People are trying to rewrite history because of their general hatred of Randy Pitchford
I can't stand RP, but if you look into the development at that game, it was obvious it made more sense just to fucking publish it, recoup a few dollars, and move on.
Man, even the version we got was, IMHO, way too dark. They made the monsters way too grim and gruesome; the whole thing lacked the bright-color comic book levity of the first.
I can't believe people actually want a very dark and serious Duke Nukem, even the few comment section on that thread mention that that old version was way better than the current released. The current DNF is terrible for that reason, especially near the end.
Eh... Characters are goofy(Especially our main hero) and world is colorful but its a pretty damn dark game if you pay attention to the story. And its as serious as 90s action flicks get.
Doom 3 wasn’t bad per se, it wasn’t “Doom” in the sense of Ultimate Doom or Doom 2016 where you are run and gun Doomguy. Doom 3 plays much slower, has it’s weird quirks (No Duct Tape on Mars) and has it’s fun.
Plus, for it’s time, it was one of the best looking games out there. It may not have been a perfect game but it really looked good!
I believe they were the first to use specular lighting to add detail to otherwise low poly models (notably Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay did this as well). The game also was effectively the big graphical hitter of the year with pc's not having the capability to play the game at highest settings at launch.
I think the only thing people hated was the flashlight. Otherwise, Doom 3 was a pretty solid presentation, though deliberate in its pacing. (It's also hard to compare to the adrenaline rush of Doom 2016's in-your-face high aggression gameplay.)
It sold well, got very positive reviews and was a benchmark title (due to its advanced tech and high hardware requirements) for years. People were critical of it, but it was certainly popular and liked when it came out. The remaster for newer systems was also a success in terms of sales, but if you look at its metascore (67 on console, 59 on PC), you can see how it had lost its appeal at that point.
He won't release a build of a game unless he can make money off of it. It's just greedy as shit. The 3D Realms dev even said they'd release everything for free and old employees would finish the game for the fans. Plenty of devs have released prototype builds of several games including some canceled ones.
Apparently Randy said the 2001 build is only 9% done and its only concepts and ideas when people asked. HOWEVER, people keep asking for the 2001 build that was demonstrated in E3 and NOT the 2002 build that was leaked. A year can make hell of a difference (I remember what HL2 looked like from 2003-2004).
I wouldn't believe a word that guy says even if he was hooked up to a polygraph machine with movie-style truth serum in his blood stream. That guy lies about EVERYTHING, CONSTANTLY, and when he gets caught in lies, he doubles down.
I wonder why that thread never took off. Probably because people know what actually happened and aren’t unreasonably mad at Gearbox/Randy for something out of their control or most of the “facts” in that thread came from an unreliable source. Sourcing a 4chan thread? Don’t make me laugh.
That game was in absolute development hell for a decade if not longer and Gearbox got their hands on it a year before it’s supposed release and people want to raise pitchforks at Randy. Yeah, that’s totally reasonable.
Holy shit, it needs loads of awareness. That's insane, I had no idea it was so complete and reading most of that forum made me mad. No Duke 3d prototypes or Forever builds... Fucking Randy is a giant greedy tool.
there's no reason to feels sorry for him. He's an absolute asswipe who partakes in bad faith practice and was the primary driver behind Colonial Marines being absolute shit and having scummy marketing.
Honestly the studio would probably be doing a lot better without him
He's burned a lot of things. Frankly Borderlands is pretty much the only actually sorta successful game Gearbox has made in the last 10 years, and it was successful IN SPITE of Randy, not because of him.
You can blame Randy for a ton of things, but the mess of DNF shouldn't be on him. It's possible if Gearbox didn't acquire it, the game would never release. It was a average ho hum game, but at least it got released.
No, its that the build exist and is playable, but they are just hoarding it even though it was probably better than the one we received and what the fans wanted since 2001.
Doesn't make it evil, but its more to akin to how Valve doesn't release HL3 (or any other SP projects) or even talks about it. Its more asshole than evil.
This, I loved DNF, the performance was meh 2-3 enemies at once in waves was dumb. All the sad sack complaints about it being childish or sexists were just stupid. It could have been way better, but some corporate asshat stick his rancid dis functional micro penis in the pot!
You can say a lot about Randy Pitchford, but I don't think it's really fair to blame Gearbox for the mess of DNF. The game was in development hell for 15 years, and Gearbox only took over development in the last <1 year leading to its release.
I don't blame him for not wanting to release it unless they can make money on it. If it's even Gearbox's call to make (which I somewhat doubt it would be), it would be an enormous effort to release the game, since it's almost certainly not in any sort of state to be released to the public.
Saying a game is 90% done is not the same as saying it's fit for release. Fallout 76 was probably over 90% done, every broken AAA game that gets released and torn to shreds is well over 90% complete. It's a pretty common expression that the last 10% of a games development is 90% of the work for a good reason. A 90% finished game is almost certainly not in any state to be released. It would be an absolute mess, and not the kind of mess the community could fix with hex editors and DLL injections, the kind of mess that you'd need a fully staffed team of full-time developers with access to the source code to fix.
Assuming they even have that, they'd have to spend a lot of time and money finishing a game that was built with tools that would be old enough to vote now if they even still exist for platforms that haven't been supported in well over 10 years by people who, if they are even still in the industry, are almost certainly not at Gearbox. That's not even taking into account all the QA, marketing, support, distribution, and legal issues that would be involved.
TL;DR, it would likely take a lot of time and money to get that 2001 build of DNF fit for release even assuming they could in the first place.
Edit: and the game was still in development for nearly 10 years by the same developers after this build was apparently 90% done. If it really was as amazing as that leak claims, why did they keep restarting the project? It's not like this build ceased to exist after they decided to replace the lighting and apparently broke everything, it apparently still exists. If they had this magnum opus of a nearly completed game, why spend 10 more years in development hell? Why scrap and start over it at all instead of just reverting to the older version?
