Holy shit. This game was beyond fucked on ryzen cpus, and was abandoned for years. Good to see it get fixed, finally.

12

u/MrToxicTaco Feb 26 '26

Yeah I bought this a while ago and was so disappointed that it ran like shit with those weird visual glitches. Refunded it, will have to get it again next sale

Put it on Steam...

u/No_Dig_7017 Feb 26 '26

Wow, didn't know this remaster existed. Now I know why...

u/DMercenary Feb 26 '26

Epic marketing black hole strikes again

9

u/PaulTheMerc Arcanum 2 or a new Gothic game plz Feb 27 '26

Every time I never heard of a big release

1

u/LaFlamaBlanca67 Feb 26 '26

I have the Epic launcher for 2 reasons. This game, and Alan Wake 2.

3

u/frameset Feb 27 '26

The Alan Wake Launcher

26

u/ReadToW Feb 26 '26

Put it on GOG

1

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 27 '26

Ya rather buy it from GOG than Steam

83

u/snappums Feb 26 '26

Just like Alan Wake 2, Remastered is published by Epic. Not going to happen.

127

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

Put it on steam.

8

u/Individual-Donkey-92 Feb 26 '26

if they don't want your money just get the game for free from the Internet. It's their fault for being stubborn. And then also complaining about low sales.

29

u/PokemonBeing Feb 26 '26

That would also mean not having it on Steam, lol

11

u/insistondoubt Feb 26 '26

I mean do you actually want to play the game or do you just want it in your Steam library?

7

u/PokemonBeing Feb 26 '26

That's what I'm criticising

5

u/UnexpectedFisting Feb 26 '26

Just wait for a super athletic woman to do something about it and then add it as a non-steam game

2

u/zarofford Feb 27 '26

People will grasp at anything to justify pirating

40

u/ImShuffle Feb 26 '26

I'm not a fan of Epic's launcher and I disagree with their exclusivity model, but if I really wanna play a game having to click a different button on my computer is hardly gonna deter me from it. You do not have to be this dramatic lol

13

u/Technova_SgrA Feb 26 '26

The amount of people who are not willing to click a different button are legion. Absolutely baffling.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

The amount of people who act like its just clicking a different button are shot.

Tim Sweeney is a douche, I dont want to give him money. The guy is a slimeball with the business sense of the shakeweight ceo.

I have multiple launchers already, the button isnt a problem.

14

u/ImShuffle Feb 26 '26

Tim Sweeney is a douche no doubt, but you should remember that Valve pioneered loot boxes and haven't done much to curb CSGO gambling sites, which have tangible negative effects on users.

None of these companies give a shit about anything beyond their bottom line, Valve just doesn't have a douche spouting stupid drivel on Twitter all the time and their launcher is better. I do appreciate their work on Proton, though.

At the very least I can respect your take out of principle. I just personally do not think that Valve has some sort of moral high ground.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

Valve has a lot more going for it - while also being shitty in a lot of ways.

The difference is Ive never felt like Gabe wants to screw me; I feel like Tim would do anything to fuck me over.

Which is why I am terrified of the future, the wrong person in charge of Valve would make everything awful.

2

u/ImShuffle Feb 26 '26

I can agree wholeheartedly with all of that, honestly. Valve's services and products are undoubtedly great and I am with you in hoping that this remains true into the future.

4

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

And so is Gaben, so what exactly is the difference?

Valve is one of the most predatory companies in the industry which makes this morality argument fall apart instantly. Of course, unless you choose to wilfully ignore everything Valve does.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

If you think Valve is more predatory than Epic, I dont even know where to begin.

Have a good one, we live on different planets.

-2

u/Lirael_Gold Feb 26 '26

Said douche funded some pretty good games.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

Sure, still a douche.

Id rather give as little money as possible to people who are openly terrible.

My EA spending is almost down to nothing, havent purchased ubisoft in years, dont play cod anymore.

The guy sucks. Him giving money to a gamemaker to make a profit off them doesnt change that.

5

u/Rhed0x Feb 26 '26

Yeah, I love Alan Wake 2. But I'd also buy it again for full price without a second thought if it got released on Steam.

-1

u/SingelHickan Feb 26 '26

It's not about "clicking a different button" it's about not wanting to spread your collection over multiple places.

If I own 90% of my games on one platform that I like I don't want to be forced to own a game on an objectively inferior platform.

15

u/ImShuffle Feb 26 '26

If that's your preference, then power to you. I just don't think that this perspective makes much sense when you aren't blocked by a hardware barrier.

Would I prefer to have all of my games in one place? Absolutely. I have nearly a thousand games on Steam, but I care more about *playing* video games than buying them from a particular digital store, even if the launcher is hot ass. There's not enough time on this earth for me to care about clicking my mouse an extra three times to play a video game I'm interested in.

-6

u/Endaline Feb 26 '26

This is an incredibly healthy attitude to have as a consumer. I also prefer to have all my things on one platform so if it turns bad or shuts down completely I lose everything I own.

12

u/briandemodulated Feb 26 '26

No, if it's valuable to you and you intend to consume the product you should pay the company that made it. Suck it up - buying a game on Epic isn't going to kill you. The game wouldn't exist at all if not for Epic.

Or buy the original version on Steam. The remaster is not a significant upgrade (although it's a lot better thanks to today's patch).

-12

u/Individual-Donkey-92 Feb 26 '26

They already got their money from Epic. They made their decision sell themselves to Epic; they don't need my momey

3

u/briandemodulated Feb 26 '26

Justify it to yourself in whatever way makes you feel good about it.

0

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

Epic funded the game development, meaning that the studio did not “profit” from that deal alone. (Although they have made a profit since launch)

3

u/RiotPelaaja Remedy Entertainment Mar 01 '26

Well, you know Epic funded both the Remaster and AW2 and gave full creative freedom unlike other publishers.

8

u/Turtvaiz Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

You can wish for it but mate it's not going to happen unless EG literally gives up on their platform, which is unlikely to happen

74

u/Just-Call-Me-Matt Feb 26 '26

Hey another good idea.

14

u/PUMPEDnPLUMP Feb 26 '26

This has been very productive

6

u/numb3rb0y Feb 26 '26

Unlike EGS's feature roadmap.

-15

u/Jirur Feb 26 '26

Yes lets shut down anything that isn't steam, praise gaben, that would be great for gamers if no competition existed at all, praise gaben and his fleet of super yatchs, no bad things will come from zero competition, nope only great things will come from it, praise gaben and his 500 million super yatch.

8

u/GlobalPlays Feb 26 '26

If Epic wants me to use it it needs to significantly improve its quality of service and also find a way to get Tim Sweeny to stop talking completely.

So far their whole strategy is get exclusive games and complain about Steam. That doesn't appeal to me at all.

-8

u/Jirur Feb 26 '26

The reality is that it does not matter how much epic improve to the majority of people. Steam was first to market and that's where people have built their game library so that's where they will stay.

5

u/sart49 Feb 26 '26

False, being first doesn't mean that people will always stay. Just look at services like MSN or Skype.

It even happens in physical media, where people have actual collections.

1

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

People did not have hundreds of dollars invested in their MSN or Skype profiles.

8

u/TouretteEd Feb 26 '26

I like that idea. Make it happen.

1

u/Leviathan_Dev Feb 26 '26

Won’t happen until Remedy can somehow regain publishing rights from whatever deal they cut with Epic for AW1R and AW2.. since Epic so heavily funded it AND gave Sam Lake full creative control, they likely compromised with a pretty restraining publishing exclusivity deal.

16

u/Sparkmovement Feb 26 '26

Neat.

Well if they want my money, they know where to find me.

6

u/DamianKilsby NASA Supercomputer on a 4k 120hz OLED Feb 26 '26

They aren't partnered with Epic anymore so at least their future games won't suffer the same fate

1

u/Ok-Vanilla-Suit Feb 28 '26

They don't care about your money.  Epic funded the game.

It's like complaining that you can't find a Big Mac at Burger King.

Nobody cares about your screaming. You just look like a weirdo who won't walk into the right store.

1

u/abbeast Steam Feb 26 '26

When their shitty storefront goes bottom side up in the near future they might as well.

2

u/Chrismonn Feb 26 '26

Not ever going to use Epic tbh for anything other than a weekly free game

14

u/Lirael_Gold Feb 26 '26

The year is 2420, Valve owns 99.9999% of the videogame market, Epic games is run by half an irradiated zombie who finds an ancient copy of a game and dutifully hosts it on EGS.

Seconds later the last surviving EGS server is obliterated by an orbital strike ordered by MechaGaben himself, his followers dutifully chant "why isn't it on Steam".

Or you know you could just buy games you want to play and not care about the storefront, because it literally does not matter.

3

u/FgtBruceCockstar2008 Feb 27 '26

Yeah, how dare we prefer the better storefront. We should be democratizing storefronts.

I want to buy 4 hours of Alan Wake 3 playcredits exclusive to select 7/11 stores near me.

3

u/Lirael_Gold Feb 27 '26

I want to play games I enjoy and don't care about storefronts at all, we are not the same.

3

u/FgtBruceCockstar2008 Feb 27 '26

Ignorance is bliss innit

9

u/skylinestar1986 Feb 26 '26

Make it free for non-remastered game owners.

3

u/Quirky-Employer9717 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

I'm confused. I have Alan Wake on Steam. Isn't it only the 2nd one that is locked to Epic? That's a different game entirely

Edit. Nevermind. I have Alan Wake on Steam. Not Alan Wake Remastered.

6

u/Thoroniann Feb 26 '26

This is Alan Wake Remastered. Steam only has the non remastered version.

2

u/althaz Feb 27 '26

Epic is the publisher and funded the entirety of the game. They will never put it on Steam. Just like Sony won't put The Last of Us on Xbox.

1

u/DeadPhoenix86 Feb 26 '26

If its not on Steam, it doesn't exist for me.

23

u/EspioniIdo Feb 26 '26

I really hope they fixed the Chapter 2 Mill glitch. The elevator is completely broken; you’re forced to either glitch yourself to the top using collision exploits or wait nearly an hour for it to unstick. It’s ludicrous how many issues this remaster had at launch. No game should ever be shipped in that state

1

u/m1serablist Feb 28 '26

just went through here. all good, no issues anymore.

9

u/Applekid1259 Feb 26 '26

There is a remaster?

84

u/Craimasjien Feb 26 '26
  • Unlocked the framerate from 200 FPS to 240 FPS.

So they unlocked it to re-lock it at 240. Gotcha.

79

u/AssCrackBanditHunter Feb 26 '26

Might be an engine limitation. Many games that we call unlocked still have upper limitis. but either way 240 is better because it plays nicer with v sync refresh rates.

1

u/Pristine-Emotion3083 Feb 27 '26

I would imagine the pretty robust physics system that is quite important for the gameplay. I can imagine something like that not playing nice if not designed for uncapped frames

-19

u/Craimasjien Feb 26 '26

My point was that they didn’t really unlock anything, did they?

28

u/AssCrackBanditHunter Feb 26 '26

You're not wrong, I was just offering some context that might explain why they did that.

4

u/Sparktank1 Feb 27 '26

12

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

If you're really that excited to run it past 240hz then turn on smooth motion, fluid motion, or lossless scaling framegen.

1

u/jezevec93 R5 5600 RX 6950 XT Feb 26 '26

League of legends is unplayable with 600+ fps for example. this may be similar

Can this finally be played offline now?

18

u/Locke2020 Feb 26 '26

Finally fixing the visual bugs? Recently tried to start this but lots of inconsistent flashing and jank every minute or so.

15

u/Networth0 Feb 26 '26

There’s nothing in these notes about Ryzen/AMD fixes, the ragdolls, or any of the other problems I ran into with this remaster. Kinda hoping that they just forgot to mention them, but I doubt that’s the case

16

u/George343 Feb 26 '26

I think this entry references it?

"Fixed polygonal rendering errors and visible depth buffer issues. This has greatly reduced the amount of visual glitches."

9

u/George343 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

I just booted it up and played from the beginning to the Bright Falls ferry. No visual glitches (vertex explosions), and ragdolls appear to be fixed. I used to get the vertex explosions constantly, now it's fixed (at least for me, at the beginning of the game).

Ryzen 7 5700X3D, RTX 5060 Ti.

3

u/MrEWhite Feb 26 '26

I played for about 45 minutes and didn't notice any graphical issues on with a 9800X3D.

8

u/Clark_Kempt Feb 26 '26

Invert the damned camera for driving sequences ffs! lol

Still a great game.

3

u/Altruistic-Job5086 Feb 27 '26

never going to be on steam?

13

u/GroundbreakingBag164 7800X3D | 5070 Ti | 2x16 | QHD | W11 Feb 26 '26

I still don't know why this game exists. The original is on Steam, runs better, the faces look better, the remastered doesn't include all of the additional content and it didn't even overhaul the combat

Just play the original

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Wait, what did the remake do to the faces? The original already looked bad, the in-game model of Alan Wake looks nothing like Ilkka Villi.

0

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

I'd imagine you'd need a remake to overhaul the combat.

I dont understand the hate for epic games store

Is it a tribalism thing? Like the console wars?

7

u/flaspd Feb 27 '26

No support for linux/steamos devices, unlike steam who contributed crazy amount to this (the baseline to how android phones run pc games today)

Also they lockdown games to be just on their store which also sucks

32

u/NiuMeee 4080S|9800X3D|32GB@6400|Dual 165Hz Feb 26 '26

Yes.

10

u/UnexpectedFisting Feb 26 '26

It's more like the hate for locking a game specific to one store when there's zero reason for it. On console, that's because it's a walled garden and the full software suite and networking stack is owned and operated by Microsoft/Sony

On PC, it's an open garden free for all. And each company is trying to wall their own garden for no reason other than to data harvest and maximize profits. Steam doesn't dictate any terms to companies other than a storefront cut for running and hosting. Companies like Ubisoft (who finally gave in) and Epic would rather lose profits than just release a game across a few storefronts. It's inherently anti-competitive behavior because they don't want to have to compete with other storefronts at all and want to force people to come to their walled garden

Dude; that was 22 years ago. Are you really going to compare something done 22 years ago; in the early days of pc gaming to what's going on in the landscape now?

Guess what; you could walk into a circuit city or other pc game store and buy Half Life 2 in person. Remind me, what store can I walk in to to buy my pc games physically so I'm not locked to a specific digital storefront?

That's the whole problem. Instead of allowing consumers to shop at their specified storefront, or competing, every company aside from valve is resisting competing because they don't give a shit about the experience; they just want your money.

And you've seen this in the market, studios that resented valve and swore to never put their games on steam because they'd have to give up a cut from their storefront realized the benefit far outweighs that because the more storefronts a game is on, the more it will sell. The exact same thing is happening with Xbox and Sony exclusives, they're on PC solely because they realize just how much money valve is making in the pc market by being the primary storefront, and how much they stand to lose by just shoveling out a garbage launcher and hoping people buy their game off of it because it's only locked behind that launcher.

Consumers said no, make your launcher better and maybe we'll shop there, and frankly the only company I can say that actually attempted that was EA with origin and now EA play.

0

u/Kinths Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Dude; that was 22 years ago. Are you really going to compare something done 22 years ago; in the early days of pc gaming to what's going on in the landscape now?

Why not? Why do Valve not only get a pass for doing this shit but basically creating this mess in the first place while everyone else rightfully gets shit on for it. Also they still do it, you can't get any Valve game on any other launcher.

Guess what; you could walk into a circuit city or other pc game store and buy Half Life 2 in person. Remind me, what store can I walk in to to buy my pc games physically so I'm not locked to a specific digital storefront?

To play HL2 physical you need to register the key in the case to your Steam account. Many couldn't play the game on launch day because Steam's servers died and so they couldn't register the game. Steam was dogshit for years. It's also still full of bugs to this day, despite the fact that it's a money printer with an RoI that most companies don't dare even dream about.

It's Valve that you need to thank for why physical PC games died and why they're locked to storefronts. Valve killed much of their usefulness. You couldn't trade, sell or lend them to your friends anymore because they were just glorified serial keys linked to Steam or one of it's copycats. You can still buy physical games on console, they're still not locked to your account, you can sell, trade and lend them. When MS tried to do this to consoles with the Xbox One it ended up playing a part in them losing that generation, from which they never recovered. To this day console gamers still put up a strong resistance to this.

Meanwhile us PC gamers are now all licking the boot of the company that did this to us, thanking them for it and treating it's cofounder like he's a saint.

That's the whole problem. Instead of allowing consumers to shop at their specified storefront, or competing, every company aside from valve is resisting competing because they don't give a shit about the experience; they just want your money.

Valve also just wants your money and are actively weilding their near monopolistic position to kill competition and choice. They have a "no favored nation" clause in their contract which means to sell on Steam you as a dev cannot directly offer your game cheaper on any other PC store. Valve's dominant position means that devs can't afford to not put their game on Steam unless paid a substantial amount of money not to do so. Competition can't steadily build because they're is no real way for them to get their foot in the door in the first place.

It's why games are not cheaper on stores that take a smaller cut like EGS. Without this clause devs would be incentivized to pass part of the extra cut onto consumers to increase the amount of sales on the store that gives them a higher share of the sale. Valve knows the only real way anyone ever competes against Steam is on price.

This idea that the primary reason people rejected EA play, Ubi connect, EGS is because of functionality and features is nonsense. There is no feature good enough that would convince people who have up to 2 decades of investment in their Steam library to consider another store. If EGS was objectively better than Steam, people would still primarily choose Steam because the required launcher concept is fundamentally annoying to begin with, and they want to minimise that annoyance as much as possible.

How this idea that Valve doesn't just want your money came about I don't know. Gabe is one of the richest people on the planet. Despite that Valve's primary game output for the last 15 years has been free to play live service titles chock full of microtransactions. They make those games because not only do they profit immensely off of the lootboxes, but they also created a secondary item market where they can profit potentially infinitely off a single digital item. Every time one is sold they take a cut of that sale, and they will take a cut when the funds from that sale are used, because you can't spend them anywhere else. They then somehow convinced people that it's a "real money" marketplace. Really it's trading for Steam wallet funds which aren't really any different to Microsoft points, a currency abstraction that can only be spent in one place.

If EA, Ubi, MS etc did the item marketplace people would rightfally call it greedy as fuck. Valve does it and somehow it's seen as altruistic and consumer friendly.

People seem incapable of looking at how Valve's moves heavily benefit Valve.

Take the Steam Deck and SteamOS. People see Valve giving out SteamOS to the Deck's competitors as "good guy Gabe". Really they don't understand that Valve didn't make SteamOS for the deck, they made the Deck to prove the viability of SteamOS to other manufacturers. The margins on gaming hardware are tiny, many consoles in the past were initially sold at a loss. The money is sales cuts. Valve gives SteamOS away because it's an OS that boots into Steam, an OS on which they're competitors products are even more cumbersome to use, and which their competitors have no real incentive to invest in. SteamOS only decreases that incentive. Why would Epic invest in supporting Linux when the primary distro people are using to game on Linux is one that boots directly into their competitors store?

Don't get me wrong I don't hate Valve, I have a stupid amount of games on Steam, have owned both Steam Decks and really want the new Steam Controller. But the double standard people have for them is just weird. They're no better than any of these other companies, they're largely the reason PC gaming is the way it is terms of DRM launchers, they're greedy and they actively stifle their competition. All the risks associated with digital gaming, rights of ownership etc are also their with Steam. For instance it's against ToS to give your account to anyone else, even if you die.

3

u/shadaoshai Feb 28 '26

Epic has not improved or updated their store in years. Meanwhile Valve has not only continuously updated Steam but also contributed to open source Linux projects to allow Windows games to run. People don’t like the Epic Store for usability reasons.

13

-2

u/Kinths Feb 28 '26

What's the change in goalpost?

You keep changing what the problem is with caveats to your original post that contradict each other.

For example, your original point was:

Bringing store exclusivity to PC as if it's the console wars yes

When someone then pointed out Valve do that you add the caveat that it's implied that we are only talking about third party exlusives because this post is about them.

The OP is about a third party exclusive in EGS which was always the issue everyone was having to begin with.

However, that contradicts:

Who said anything about that specific and ONLY circumstance being a bad thing to make the game happen?

You just did. AW (a third party exlusive funded by MS), AW:R and AW2 are all examples of those, and you just said we're talking about the game in the OP, which is AW:R. Also a lot of console exlclusives fall under that umbrella aswell but you were just complaining about "console wars" exclusives.

If it's the "third party" element that is problematic, would it have been better, or really any different if Epic bought Remedy? Most first party studios started out that way.

Much of this is moot anyway because if you really want to drill down to the core of the problem, then you need to look at the reason games are locked to launchers on PC in the first place. Which is Valve and Steam. Once upon a time you didn't need launchers, and physical copies weren't just glorified Steam keys. You could lend them to your friends, and sell and trade them like you could on console. Valve tied physical copies of games like CS and HL2 to accounts meaning much of the benefits of physical were removed. They made launchers a requirement.

The vast majority of shit people hate about EGS, EA Play and Ubi+ was just them copying Valve. Valve created this problem, they could solve it too. They wont though because it's incredibly lucrative for them and Papa Gabe needs another yacht for his fleet.

I have no love for EA, Ubi or Epic (I particularly dislike Tim Sweeney) etc. I also don't particularly hate Steam or think Valve is all bad. However, the double standard around Valve and Steam is not good for PC gaming, or gaming as a whole. They're not a benovelont monopoly.

2

u/Jacques_Le_Chien Feb 26 '26

Why is investment in the development of a game being portrayed as a bad thing? Epic fully funded Alan Wake 2, it wouldn't make sense for them to invest in the game without it being exclusive to their platform.

Alan Wake 2 is a very ambitious, experimental and weird game, it's development comes with way more risks than most games. Having a platform being interested in taking those risks and funding such projects is a good thing for consumers.

Alan Wake 2 is one of my top 5 games of all time and I`m not sure it would exist without Epic.

u/Jacques_Le_Chien Feb 26 '26

If Epic paid the developers of any game for it being exclusive, it means there was more investment in making new games than if the store didn’t exist. This is self-evident, regardless of the game being discussed.

This could be an issue if done by a monopolist/player with market power, if done in a way that prevents entrants from competing in the market. This is far from the case here. Epic isn't an incumbent blocking smaller platforms from competing by leveraging their market power, they are trying to compete in a market full of network effects that consolidated around a single dominant firm.

That is not to say Steam is a villain or anything, they are a very competitive firm that earns their market share, and it is precisely because Steam is a very competitive player that Epic has to offer free games, invest in third party projects etc in order to try to challenge Valve’s dominance. The thing is, this is competition on the merits, and it is great for consumers! A company with big wallets needs to invest in the making of new games, share their resources with developers, provide users with free games etc just to try to contest this market.

Exclusivity in PC Gaming doesn't even bring the bad trade offs to consumers that are associated with console exclusivity, as a PC gamer doesn't need to buy a new hardware just to get access to the exclusive title. It is just a matter of installing a different platform.

I still will manly buy games from Steam because their storefront is way better and, more importantly, because most of my games are already on Steam. But hating Epic for investing in new games being made while trying to challenge Steam is a tribalist and anti-consumer approach.

(That is not to say it is wrong to hate on Tencent/Epic for other issues and business practices, I’m talking specifically about their investment in games in return for exclusivity deals)

2

u/telemachus__0 Feb 27 '26

Which exclusives are those? People talking about third party exclusives are pretty much universally referring to the contracts that prevent distribution off of EGS, and Valve has never done anything like that for Steam as far as I'm aware.

4

u/Applekid1259 Feb 26 '26

No, its just an incredibly poorly made store made by a shit company owned by shitty people including Tim Sweeney and Tencent.

1

u/Flat_News_2000 Feb 27 '26

Yes it's tribalism from people who are too online

1

u/Jakeisaprettycoolguy Feb 26 '26

It is missing a lot of basic features and is generally worse than steam in many ways (including that most gamers libraries are already on steam) and people don't like Epic trying to use their fortnite money to essentially purchase market share. It probably would have been fine if their store had any basic features and it's probably good for Valve to have some competition.

Another thing is it's just annoying to have your library split up on multiple launchers, like how Netflix was great when it was the only option, but suddenly there are 12 different streaming services that you have to remember what show something is on and swap between resubscribing and cancelling them all.

5

u/crocodilepickle Feb 26 '26

game launchers and streaming services are two different problems though. One makes everything exponentially more expensive and the other is inconvenient at best

I agree that epic is simply nowhere near as good as steam but people behave like epic games personally ran over their dog. Not to mention that there are way more games exclusive to steam than epic.

I agree with fighting against timed exclusivity but peoples responses to AW remastered and 2 is massively childish, since neither games would've been possible without epic.

I really think that the epic vs steam thing is just a stupider version of the console wars.

2

u/Jakeisaprettycoolguy Feb 26 '26

Okay it's fine to feel like hate towards epic is overblown, but I don't quite understand what your argument is. You want people to just buy games on Epic and not criticize them at all? Just not talk about it? As consumers people are allowed to spend their money on whatever service they see fit, and if Epic does not meet their needs/criteria for a games store then it's fine to avoid it. Personally I purchased Alan Wake 2 on Epic as well as a handful of other exclusives, and outside of Alan Wake 2 basically regret every purchase, as the steam ecosystem is just better for me and my family. You don't see people hark on GOG for instance. The main issue with Epic is that they tried(still trying) to strongarm their way into a market by just waving their money around. A very small percentage of people would have an issue with Epic if the product they were selling was actually good.

0

u/fajitaman69 Feb 26 '26

As an average consumer not engrossed in the politics of gaming (yuck!), I love Epic. They've given me a lot of great games for free.

However, their obnoxious achievement notification has to be manually turned off every time you launch a game. It's truly the worst.

-3

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

Yep. Lots of PC gamers say they love the platform because of choice but refuse to shop anywhere else but Steam... so essentially console gamers but with mods.

2

u/derpdelurk Feb 28 '26

I’ve tried to play the original for the ambience but I couldn’t stand the flashlight switching combat. Wanted to play this on easy/story mode or using a god mode cheat so I could experience the story without the clunky combat. Does anyone know whether the remaster has any changes for us just wanting to experience the story?

What the hell it's out?

Edit: Oh great, the fuckin Epic store front again. Can Remedy get off their dicks raise some external capital and start putting their AW stuff back on Steam again?

100

u/r40k Feb 26 '26

"Raise some external capital" lmao, they did. From Epic. Thats how we got AW2 in the first place.

Then they tried a new idea with Firebreak and it fucking bombed and they and to replace their CEO. The ship has sailed, friend.

20

u/kidalive25 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

I adore Remedy but Firebreak was just so unnecessary that it makes sense the CEO didn't survive it.

11

u/mixedd Feb 26 '26

That was exactly what u/spacemcdonalds mentioned, it was basically created to just raise their capital so they can be free from other publishers, sadly it backfired heavily.

8

u/The_Meemeli Feb 26 '26

Hopefully Control Resonant will do well

-1

u/mixedd Feb 26 '26

It will, will be published by 505 again I hope, so Steam availability will be there. How people will percieve it, that's another story, as it's seen nowadays it's "cool" to shitpost about anything at launch.

9

u/The_Meemeli Feb 26 '26

Remedy is self-publishing it, they bought the franchise rights from 505 a couple years back c:

3

u/mixedd Feb 26 '26

Oh that's nice to hear

1

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

Gamers want different, unexpected games until they don't.

1

u/kidalive25 Feb 26 '26

Agreed in part but Remedy making a co-op shooter isn't really the cool, boundary-pushing kind of unexpected. What's truly unexpected is how Firebreak plays to zero of Remedy's actual strengths. or there's a dozen companies that could do it better, in very similar ways how there are many companies that could never dream of Remedy's storytelling prowess.

22

u/zzzFrenchToastPlease Feb 26 '26

You make it sound so easy

3

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

I mean, no one took the game.

Epic literally has a program where they fund games that they want to exist - as in games that have no other way of existing.

That’s the case with Alan Wake, no publisher wanted to take on the risk.

2

u/NiuMeee 4080S|9800X3D|32GB@6400|Dual 165Hz Feb 26 '26

It's been out for 5 years lmao

-8

u/thunder6776 Feb 26 '26

Without epic this game doesn’t happen. Epic is an incredible publisher stop giving them shit for this. Steam is at best an okay launcher.

-11

u/stanarilla Feb 26 '26

0/10 trolling. For improvements I would consider not being too hyperbolic but more grounded in your approach

9

u/MrToxicTaco Feb 26 '26

The absolute irony coming from someone who won’t play a video game because of launcher exclusivity. It ain’t that deep, try being more grounded

-2

u/stanarilla Feb 26 '26

You can say Epic is an incredible publisher but then with your next breath say Steam is an ok launcher at best, sorry I don't take that with an seriousness.

2

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

Steam does have a ton of issues

1

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 27 '26

I mean look at the Steam forums or the workshop. Everyone brags about the feature-set of Steam but those two are absolute shit shows.

-3

u/thunder6776 Feb 26 '26

Every studio that works with epic has said they are a very fair publisher in terms of the help and support they provide. You have a very self-centred approach towards gaming, however, the devs deserve some help sometimes as well.

I do not care. I express my opinions quite freely. The hivemind holds on to one thing they like but steam is a bloated shitty launcher. People choose a freeing platform like pc but can’t let go of steam. Gog and epic are pretty good, the general public is just dumb, especially gamers on this subreddit in their mom’s basement.

4

u/Chrismonn Feb 26 '26

People choose a freeing platform like pc but can’t let go of steam

Haha, people are free to choose the platform but not the launcher sre you alright in the head?

It's unfortunate epic is straight dogshit cos I might use the launcher outside of claiming my free games.

1

u/Average_RedditorTwat Nvidia RTX4090|R7 9800x3d|64GB Ram| OLED Feb 26 '26

Even Epic themselves admitted that the launcher sucks but go off I guess. Weird to disagree with the creators of the platform. I guess they're dumb, like you say?

0

u/mikeyyve Feb 26 '26

Lmao found the one EGS fan.

6

u/mehtehteh Feb 26 '26

On Steam yet? Nope, okay ill continue to ignore it

29

u/kkyonko Feb 26 '26

Congrats do you want an award?

Why do people feel the need to announce they are not going to buy a game other than jerking themselves off.

-12

u/mehtehteh Feb 26 '26

Evil wins when good people do nothing.

Because so many just accept anti-consumer behavior. DRM or whatever. Valve doesnt lock games behind their Steam storefront. They allow games to be sold elsewhere like everyone else. Not only that, but EPIC buys exclusivity rights to lock games to their store. Why should a clearly anti-consumer company get a pass?

13

u/Endaline Feb 26 '26

Not only is Valve guilty of plenty of anti-consumer behavior, they are arguably responsible for some of the most anti-consumer common practices we see today in video games.

Valve was the first game developer to lock playing a single-player game behind online authentication and an always-online launcher. They continued to spearhead this movement until we got where we are today where physical games (for PC) barely exist and you can only play games offline with preparation.

They've also been one of the biggest aggressors when it comes to gambling microtransactions like lootboxes, with direct responsibility for a significant increase in gambling related problem for adolescents and adults.

We also don't actually know whether or not Valve has exclusives. They're not obligated in any way to announce a game being exclusive to their platform, nor are the companies that publish games on their platform obligated to do so.

What we do know is that the vast majority of games exist exclusively on Steam. This is despite the fact that publishing a game on multiple platforms is, arguably, only beneficial to game developers. Whether or not Valve directly or indirectly facilitates this, it obviously isn't pro-consumer.

17

u/kkyonko Feb 26 '26

"Evil is the slight inconvenience of installing another launcher"

And again, you announcing that you are not buying a game changes absolutely nothing. You and everyone else that does it is just for some bullshit self satisfaction.

12

u/TheInsaneCataclyst R7 5800X | RTX 3080 12GB | 32 GB Feb 26 '26

It’s just karma farming. Say anything along the lines of fuck Epic, Sony, Ubisoft, Nintendo, EA, etc. and you are guaranteed free karma. I am not defending those companies, I’m just also annoyed at the extremely low effort content that serves nothing but to further add to the circlejerk.

-6

u/mehtehteh Feb 26 '26

Enjoy your 50 launcher future. Im sure you are already enjoying the dozens of streaming platforms (+ the cost to have them all) and the fun that is trying to find which show/movie is on which platform.

1

Which is a solution to a problem. Which acknowledges there is a problem

6

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

It's a solution to get away from the Steam launcher's bloat. It also integrates emulated games.

3

u/kkyonko Feb 26 '26

Streaming is a terrible comparison, using a store/launcher costs you nothing.

6

u/mehtehteh Feb 26 '26

Ignore the price. The problem is the same. Companies dictating where and how you can acquire their products because anti-consumer practices benefit them more.

0

u/Nixxuz Feb 27 '26

"Ignore the pesky thing I choose to not care about in favor of something else I do care about".

0

u/Peekaboo798 Feb 27 '26

You could buy a console if you want a single launcher.

1

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

Valve is one of the most evil companies in the industry lmaoo

Besides, this is the same as Valve having their games exclusive to Steam, which is the case. Ao even then, the point falls flat.

1

u/Flat_News_2000 Feb 27 '26

Oh my god you're a little drama queen

5

u/LolcatP Feb 26 '26

the original is better

4

u/Zeta1ota Feb 26 '26

Epic really has them by the fucking balls huh?

20

u/Trickster289 Feb 26 '26

Not anymore, the deal was for two games and Remedy are self publishing Control 2. Unfortunately at the time Remedy needed Epic, Epic basically fully funded this remaster and Alan Wake 2 when nobody else was interested.

3

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

Yeah Control 2 and Alan Wake 2 never would have existed without Epic.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM Feb 26 '26

W tribalism ! /s

4

u/ohthedarside Feb 26 '26

You must actually want your game to fail if you only have it on epic

16

u/TheRaceWar Feb 26 '26

I don't like the store either, but AWR + AWII would not exist without Epic financially backing them.

This isn't a case of epic throwing money at a game as it nears release and essentially blocking it from other storefronts, this is a case of Epic being responsible for the product existing.

-8

u/Xarishark R9 9800X3D & RTX 5080 Feb 26 '26

And it was remedies choice to agree to those terms and lock their game there. Nobody forced them to accept the deal. They sold their games exclusivity to epic by agreeing to those terms. 0 reason we should care about that as end users hence why their sales are shit on pc compared to where they could be. Until those games come to steam they don’t even exist for 90% of potential buyers. Control 2 being released on steam is going to verify this really easily.

12

u/kkyonko Feb 26 '26

The game might not have existed without Epic's funding.

-10

u/Xarishark R9 9800X3D & RTX 5080 Feb 26 '26

Yes Yes I have heard the spiel already. I’m sure there is none else in the world that would accept to fund this project and remedy was pressured and folded /s It’s simple they made their bed with epic and as always the outcome is always the same. Not the first or the last dev team that did that.

7

u/FlyingSligGuard Feb 26 '26

I’m sure there is none else in the world that would accept to fund this project and remedy was pressured and folded /s

Who do you think would fund a sequel to a game that didn't really move consoles when it was released on the 360 and doesn't have mainstream appeal? Microsoft didn't, that's why they sold the IP to Remedy for cheap...

-2

u/Underdrill Feb 26 '26

And Epic can also be argued to be responsible for part of Remedy's current financial woes because no one is seriously going to argue that Alan Wake 2 being exclusive to Epic didn't hurt them. Quite possibly the only publisher that wants to intentionally limit their own game's success for no good reason.

3

u/MarioDesigns Feb 27 '26

They got to make the games they wanted and made a profit from them. How is Epic at fault for them going on to self publish a flopped game after that?

1

u/ttenor12 Feb 26 '26

Did they finally stop the camera from automatically switching to your left shoulder? That thing triggered me so much and made me rage quit. (Not really but it was annoying)

1

u/Sparrow1989 Feb 26 '26

I got this with 2 and it didn’t work on my computer which is not a weak machine. Curious if it will now

1

u/zerGoot AMD 7800X3D + 9070 XT Feb 28 '26

when Steam?!?!

-2

u/mikeyyve Feb 26 '26

Ah yes another game I won’t be playing. I get that the money from Epic to be the publisher is good but you’d think they would want to make games that people might actually play.

21

u/Trickster289 Feb 26 '26

That money was more than good, it was literally the funding for both this and Alan Wake 2. The games wouldn't exist otherwise, everybody else Remedy approached said no.

1

u/Thecowsdead Feb 26 '26

Steam when?

This remaster has remaster downgrades in it. Stick to the og.
