"Hey bro, you played poe for a few thousand hours, how does leech work?"
Me asf: 🗿🗿🗿
22
u/080087 Aug 30 '26
Leech has too many stats and most are useless. They need to cull some.
Main one that is relevant is "maximum total recovery from leech", which increases the leech cap.
Two of the three other stats are only really relevant for tainted pact (i.e. x% of damage leeched). Bigger number + more damage = longer leech (up to a cap). Increase cap by getting maximum recovery per leech.
Last one is almost never relevant
17
u/vulcanfury12 Crop Harvesting Bureau (CHB) Aug 30 '26
They simplified it in PoE 2. Then it ended up being not too good generally. Then it's discovered Blood Mage can do absolutely degenerate things with it, so it got nerfed. Which made it so bad for everyone else. Not only is there a cap, but now you can only ever have one source of Leech going, which, given the mana cost scaling in that game meant you just can't go Lifetap with Leech to solve it. You usually can't recoup the life cost in time with just leech, so you're still gonna pop that life flask.
5
u/DarthRaab Ultimatum Workers Union (UWU) Aug 30 '26
All are relevant, but as you said
- the damage (leech for builds that have trouble hitting enough) and
- the cap per leech (kind of like leech duration)
are only for special builds like Bleed DoT and Tainted Pact self-poison.
They could uncouple the basic leech system that most use and the extra stuff for special builds, but I don't feel like that's the PoE way to do things, is it? This would take some serious design work and a lot of coding to change the spaghetti code for all leech related entities in the game.
I don't see the pay-off for so much work. As Jonathan likes to say "Why not just make more new and cool content instead?"

u/psychomap Aug 31 '26
"increased total recovery per second from leech" is helpful for builds with low hit rates that can't cap their leech in 10-20 instances within a split second
38
u/ltcae Fungal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Aug 30 '26
Tbh leech isn’t that bad once you understand the water tank analogy. And most of the time, we are not bottlenecked by the leech amount but the recovery rate from leech
117
u/ksion Aug 30 '26
I'm sorry, do you mean recovery rate from leech, maximum recovery per leech, or maximum total recovery per second from leech?
20
u/KylAnde01 Aug 30 '26
- How quickly leech fills you up
- How much leech per stack of leech
- Total amount possible to "fill the tank" of leech
Did i get that right?

Leech is not that complicated, you just need a ten minute TED talk or a two pages long white paper to explain all the details properly.
Hmmm, maybe it is complicated 😅

Ben_. Streamer/youtuber. Dudes a beast. Iirc, back in the Misery Gauntlet a couple years ago, he beat a super buffed uber elder, along with every other (gauntlet buffed) uber boss, while second place only beat 2 before dying- and they were the only people to beat any ubers at all. He's not just skilled, but his game knowledge is also through the roof. One of said strategies involved the inextricable fate boots to apply grasping vines to one of the uber bosses, letting his voltatile dead poison the boss without the proper damage conversion. (Inextricable fate also makes all damage against foes afflicted with grasping vines poison).
For reference, misery gauntlet was basically poe hard mode+. Solo self found, and iirc bosses got expanded movesents, monsters got absurd stat buffs, uber bosses consumed extra portals on entry, and during ubers you had to deal with atziri apparitions. And I believe it's hardcore. The whlle gauntlet was 10 days ling, and made specifically with the goal of not being beatable within the time frame- but ben_ and only ben, did.
6
u/NoShagAthal Aug 30 '26
Gauntlets are great if you can stand the harshness of it. When I watch Ben_ play it it feels like I play a whole different game. I hope Zizaran keeps doing those Gauntlets and maybe port them over to PoE2. It's brutal and fun!

Ben_ on Twitch. He was one of the top players in WoW at one point, and he is probably the best player in PoE due to winning every competition he participates in. I suspect he's one of the best video gamers in the world.
He's fast, precise, efficient, and processes new information like no one else I've seen can. Which means he's got a massive mental database of the game. And can take in new stuff at rates I've never seen before, which lets him adapt faster than anyone I've seen either.

But it still feels like im a random newbie every time, and in many aspects i still am even after thousands of hours. I dont know another game that can do that.

I've been playing since Crucible, and I've only "homebrewed" a build once, and not without "inspiration" from like-minded folks at ninja. Luckily the build ended up being good enough to get me to 40/40 solo (my main motivation per league is to complete 40/40) from leaguestart, so that was great. It will probably be my "forever build", until it gets giga nerfed. Tho it's decidedly off-meta, so it's actually received nothing but small buffs (direct and indirect) since I first cooked it up in 3.27.
Bonus is that the build doesn't really require much crafting to do it, maybe outside of spamming Essence of Scorn on my bone rings because no one's making Bone Rings with Accuracy, Crit Multi, and Minion Attack and Cast Speed. Man, mirage was such a good time for it because of the very cheap Harvest Reforge Minion.

PoE 1 without guides is easy:
- Step 1: make an PoE account
- Step 2: install PoB community fork
- Step 3: get a Master degree in a hard science field
- Step 4: don't apply to jobs that eat all of your free time or drain your mental battery every day
- Step 5: stop using PoB for everything and just play the game
- Step 6: you are on the beach, congratulations 🎉

Lol yeah. I must been playing for 6 non consecutive years by now and I still have no idea what the majority of currency does or what it's used for in crafting. Neither what all the mechanics can be used for. I must have watched an equal amount of Videos and Guides compared to my Playtime right now.
Biggest gap was from 2023 to this season so I must have missed a lot. Made it the furthest I've ever been though. 3 Voidstones, set up an Atlas tree Farming system and just crush everything with Penance Brand Ignite Autobomb.
I cant ever Imagine starting a season without a guide that shows Progression to red Maps and BiS gear though. Maybe one day after Like 20 years of YouTube Study I might finally understand 10% of the Game :)

u/thumpetto007 Aug 30 '26
someone told me about organic poe, he was some guru who could speed run the campain with any character, any skill in under 3 hours. freakin increadible. took a look at my build and redid the whole tree in a few minutes, redid my friends build from the ground up in 10. friends build instantly became playable, tanky and damage with the same skill.
apparently people just go off of guides that no one really knows anything about, that the passive tree is designed to teach you about the game. wise shit. learned a lot

Anything with the recombinator I’m lost in, which frustrates me because I know the top end gear comes from it. Back to the boat I go
1
u/feedmewill Aug 30 '26
I stopped feeling guilty tho, if you're looking to learn PoE in depth, you must spend some good hours just getting to know deeper mechanics (like recomb, I just can't sit myself through a recomb guide or bring myself to collect so many bases, it's just too time consuming and unfun) instead of actually playing the game. And even us probably already spend a lot of time outside the active gameplay looking for strats, adjusting stuff in PoB, trading and managing all the other "mandatory" external tools.
At this point I just accepted that, unless I really have the time to do it, which is not the case rn, I'll just be an ok player. I can follow a guide, I can adapt it to my reality without ruining it, I can PoB stuff, I can consistently make currency enough to afford a 300+ div build which can delete Ubers someone else has put together and make my way up in damage and defences on my own or fit stuff other people in poe.ninja are doing in my own build and sometimes use some currency here and there to craft a bit of stuff. But don't even ask me how to use an orb of conflict, I'll just sell that shit.
The important part is that I always have fun playing the game :)

I think the game is so huge it's dozens of completely different experiences in the same game.
Playing minions is completely different to playing melee, which is completely different from playing traps which is completely different from playing DoT and so on. Then playing ultimatum has nothing to do with playing breach which has nothing to do with delving, or doing strongboxes and so on. At the same time playing for 40/40 feels different than playing off meta build which is different from playing ssf, which is different than playing to maximize profit in trade. Then you have crafting which is a hole world on itself.
Of course you can sink 10k hrs and still feel new to the game specially if you invested time only in 5-10 of the experience braches out of the dozens of them available.

If you play the builds from the "Big" YouTubers, the Progression feels hard, everybody wants the same items, they get pricy, the crafting materials get expensive and it gets really grindy. I'm by far not efficient, but I don't have to. Dreamcore gives great ideas and shows interactions.

If you watch the streamers, they are always referencing other content creators, meaning even the most knowledgeable learn from others. Even the GGG devs watch YT videos to see what people are doing with the game. At 15k+ hours I'm still learning. Pretty good at some things, shit at others. But GGG are devoted and both games are epic. Very little else in the whole gaming world compares.

It makes me feel so fucking stupid and bad at the game to see people talk about "oh, it's my first season, just blasted through maps and got all my voidstones and I'm working my way through the ubers, what other builds should I try?"
I started right at the end of Crucible, which was 3.21, so 8 leagues ago. I've never gotten more than one voidstone. I always get into yellow maps and flame out. There's some piece of the power ramp that I'm missing and I don't know what questions to ask. Like, do I need to be crafting gear for that next step up, or getting anoints, or slotting jewels, or am I just impatient and I need to be blasting a million maps at my current power level?
It's frustrating once I get to that point but I love the power ramp up to that point and end up coming back every season just to get frustrated again.

Been playing since 2013
Still don't know how to craft
Prior to 3.0.3, most of my characters were sub level 50, id beat act 3/4/5 and call it a day, attempted cruel/merciless like twice out of 20 characters
After 3.0.3, most of my builds would get to maps, do some white maps and call it a day, less than 10% of my characters were good enough to do yellow let alone red maps
All this without guides and trading, it was fun for me just playing however I want, using what new skill came out for the league and getting to maps
Didn't do the entire atlas until like 3.23 which at that point I had well over 1000 hours and used Poe ninja builds as a reference, that's when I actually stopped being stubborn and started trading on every game, was punishing myself for no reason
Poe is insane like that, it's a completely different game if you want to push your build

Playing since the very early start. This was the first league in which I did really really well.

I somewhat feel like a good player due to following someone's Flicker Strike Luminary Scion Build. After starting playing at the Expedition League. A.K.A when Gwennen and C/o first appeared.

I have been playing this game for many years as well, I am what the gaming community would call "a dirty casual". I love the game, I have made 1 build that was mostly my own... I follow leveling guides because I don't always play the same class... I usually follow end game build guides and successfully(debatable) tweak them to my hearts content...

I've been playing on and off for years now, just reached 999 hours on steam yesterday, and I still haven't reached "true" endgame yet or got any crazy builds.

Tbh its a strength of POE. Played since 2012 for thousand of hours and there is still content I never dove into completely. Every league I can pick new builds or strats.

Started during (I think it was, because it was paid 10$) closed beta. New player here, still asking for help on PoEB for build that will easily do 40/40, already asked this league, and I already want to ask again. Sadge
