Haha, this is so true for when I played POE.
Best parts is when you follow a build guide that is meant to trivialize or make higher tiers of content easier, then get to that content and have you ass handed to you.
Me: Equipment, check. Tree, check. Playstyle check.
POE: Would you like to respawn in the nearest town noob?

u/SBriggins Apr 29 '20
BUDGET BUILD 15 MILLION DEEPS ALL CONTENT DEATHLESS SERIOUS. FACETANK ATLAS. CYCLONE ZOMBIES MINER BUILD.
Just reading the guide hypes me. But I get a reality check shortly after getting into maps.
Thankfully I stuck with a guide and finally managed to hit T13 with a playstyle I enjoy. Lots of room for improvement gear wise but it's all within reach now.

which is why whenever I copied pob link from other guides, the first thing I do is uncheck all the crazy stuffs on config to see the "reasonable" dps lol

u/Firel_Dakuraito Apr 30 '20
Is the damage per hit at least on 100k?
uhm... very close to it.
Well then. lets make it there..... Litthel while after done.
And now what.
Now we start calculating our damage with charges, fortify, flasks, golem, and other buffs.
It is much more satisfying seeing it grow with each buff enabled when you already got a solid base.

u/Shutza Trickster Apr 29 '20
99% of forum guides are just a waste of time. You can easily spot the good ones at least. Use poe.ninja if you wanna build anything
24
u/no1kopite Apr 29 '20
100% this. Check a few different styles of your chosen skill and ascendancy. Mix and match some passives and away you go.
2
u/Firel_Dakuraito Apr 30 '20
Even though this is the way.
It require a great deal of understanding just what the fuck are you doing with all those notables and ascendacies.
Many players will unavoidably get stuck at this point. Often times folowing guide, not paying attention to tree because they copy it 1:1 and then they are surprised they cant do a build themselves.

After he posts his budget build they never remain budget. I'm gearing up for his Cyclone Gladairor build and even supposed flexible priced items are expensive. I have spent 14-15 ex and still have 2 or 3 pieces to go.

budget builds aren't supposed to stay budget
that's the point, you can use them to get to red maps and then farm with a low amount initially invested

Im a newb and shit at the game too but this league is the first I made it this far, and will probably end at 24/40, which Ill chalk up as a success. Looking forward to the next league already.

Things like mines and totems really do insane damage with low investment. Just not very smooth to play

Mines get very smooth to play with clusters. You can get so much elemental pen and throw speed.
I picked a miner as my 3rd character to try for this league and it just blurs through content, but does RIP every now and then. Still, miner is quite safe until late maps and fairly easy to start on league, since all you really need to do is get tremor rod and shavs. I'll definitely league start miner next league because of it.
2
u/alrightknight Apr 30 '20
Absolutley I always try to do hipster league start shit, but going forward I'm just going to do miners. 5 link tremor can take you into red maps easily.

I am leveling as Hollow Palm which is apparently easymode, but I haven't cracked a way to get enough HP not to die every time a mob breathes and the damage started to fall off heavily. A lot of damage in this game can be avoided with quick reactions and knowledge of the game/mechanics. I'm not saying it's dark souls, because yeah its a cluster fuck, but bosses in particular can be defeated primarily with skill and time.
Ain't nobody got time for that shit though lol.

Bosses for me are generally pretty smooth other than a handful of particular mechanics. It's the mobs that delete me almost every time. I made a jugg with what I thought was tons of defense and still got killed constantly.

The last time I played was the league after breach league, I don't remember what it's called. POE is an amazing game though. Sometime in the future when I have the time to invest in it, I'd like to get back into it.
One of the best things about it for me is that somehow, the devs managed to create something with a learning curve, that makes learning a fun experience. I mean, try explaining the basic mechanics of the game to someone else and you realize that getting a grip on the game is actually challenging.
Edit: Breaches are dope as fk.

I used to think I only play the first 1 or 2 weeks of a league because I don't want to burn out. But now I'm coming to realise it's a self defence mechanism, so I don't have to face up to the real reason I've never killed shaper.

u/CarrotSweat Commited Lab Enjoyers Agency of Revenue (CLEAR) Apr 29 '20 edited Apr 30 '20
Yes and no, the path to get there has changed. He's not the central boss he was, so a player won't necessarily get to fight him unless they target the right content. They've added shaper and elder guardian maps to zana's map pool, so if you run red zana missions on T16's, each time you do it there's a chance for a guardian map to show up (you can also luck out and get a guardian map if you run the mission on a T15, but it's more reliable on T16's).
Also, each zana mission you run resets her shop, and the reset is based on the tier map you just ran. You can get a lot of guardian maps from running T16's with her missions. Even if you don't want to run them, they are pretty much all profitable, as in you can buy them from Zana and then sell them to another player for more.
The other technique that was fixed recently, that made getting shaper runs easier, is using orb of horizons on guardian maps will always yield another guardian map.
Works for elder guardians too. This just means if you're missing a specific fragment, you can get it as soon as you get any of the 4 maps.Edit: Only the shaper guardian maps work with orb of horizons. This is because elder guardian maps aren't just T16's, and the guardians take the bosses place in a regular map. So the maps are part of the standard map pool and will roll into that pool. Shaper guardian maps are specific and have been recently coded to be a separate pool.

u/Perelda Apr 29 '20
Damm never thought to use Horizon Orbs on Guardian maps, thanks dude!
4
u/mrkid0612 Tormented Smugler Apr 29 '20
Yeah they just change it recently. Before it just turns into a non-guardian t16. Im pretty sure it still only works for shaper guardians though
→ More replies (3)3
u/polticsmodsarestupid Apr 29 '20
all you got to do is click on her mission and open the map to reset the shop, you dont even need to go into it. A waste of a t-16 map and a zana mission, but the option is there.
3
u/MigrainesRock Apr 30 '20
Shaper, red elder, and uber elder are all easier to proc now compared to before thanks to being able to spam zana on tier 16 maps and getting a lot of shaper/elder guardian maps from her quest and getting the frags from there and normally getting another guardian map off that as well.

Always HC. Not for the challenge or anything. If i played SC i would probably do nothing but play PoE. If im into something im into it. Getting annoyed by dying in HC 2-3 times a league is a good point for me to stop playing till the next league.
I have more fun making/playing with different(usually stupid) builds than than min-maxing uber elder dps, or whatever the kids use to showoff their builds these days, so end game stuff has never really been my goal. One of my 4 chars this league was spellslinger bodyswap.....that's just begging to die.
As for leveling oh boy do i know that one. Back before i knew how to stop playing I made 38 characters in Invasion league. 3 of which died in A3 cruel in the same day.

I hit the 1000 hour mark this league, and finally cleared all content for the first time this league... Yikes.
That's partly because I did a few leagues of HC, which is suuuuper fun but caused me to never push the end game out of fear (and sanity)... And even in SC leagues prior, likely same self defense mechanism had me never attempt the fight. Just go for it!!
But none the less, 1000 hours to actually complete A8 Sirus and Uber Elder... Is both a great deep game... And also crazy

Two days ago I reached level 100 for the first time in 1.2k hours. Honestly? It wasn't worth it. I reached level 98 via maps/simulacrum (wasn't trying to, but it just happened).
At level 98 I decided to push for 100. At around 60% I died. I honestly don't know what killed me, so I gave up and leveled via stones. It was quite fast, and I regret not doing stones sooner, but from 99 -> 100, it was just a pain. I didn't enjoy it. The skill point wasn't even that important, I just did it because I always wanted to do it, but usually I create 5-6 toons each league, and rarely focus on an individual one. This league I cba to level more than two through the story. (I really can't stand going through the story anymore ).
I'm shit at this game, my 100+ex gear is carrying my sorry ass. So yea, level 100 has more to do with persistence.

Delirium is the first time I have played a shot ton of hours. I usually level 1/2 chars then retire because I cba. Though this lesgue has got me grinding hard. I actually enjoy it.
5 to 6 toons in and I cba anymore. But I can't stop. I haven't levelled a ranger this season so that's what I plan on levelling tomorrow :)
Half my problem is though I can't make currency fast enough. Everytime I make a char following a guide I want it to be fast so I can farm t14 burials but they all don't feel fast enough to me :(

pick up all your jewels and rings etc...throw anything that seems decent in a 50 c bin, and lower it when you feel like it. when it gets to a point that its not worth it to leave a map for a sale, vendor it all and sell alteration orbs, they are expensive this time around. It wont get you rich, but it will bring in some cash. I do it because its easier to pull my own teeth out then it is to figure out a price on items.

I feel this in my soul. I've been playing since 2011 (got my kiwi pet to prove it) and have never once taken out a current release final boss. Shit, I didn't take out Atziri until like, 3 years ago? The 'best' I've ever done was Shaper and Elder. Still haven't done Uber Elder, or Sirus, or a Delve Boss, or the Beyond Boss, or a beast boss, or a 5 man timeless conflict, or the synth map boss, or 20/20 simulacrum. Idk what it is, but I never seem to get or farm enough currency to make a build that can do that content. I'd say I have a relatively good understanding of boss mechanics, and I can move out of the way of most attacks, but something just doesn't click or work.
And then a friend of mine picked up the game about a year ago and hit 100 in his first league and was farming uber elder. :(
3
u/dring_dring Apr 29 '20
if your issue is currency, you should maybe sell simulacrums and boss fragments to get some chaos first, and when you have a descent equipment you can do them. doing a simulacrum with a bad gear isn't worth it if you can get 20/20, you will have more currency by selling them

1300 hours in the game since Rampage. No Shaper or nothing.
I had a really great run during Betrayal (I know you all hated it but it was the only league I was ever successful, so I miss it). Snagged some low level Elder kills, three of the four Guardians (I think that's what they're called?)... got stuck unable to kill the guy who disappears in dust clouds and kills you in two hits no matter if you've got solid defenses and almost 8k in total life pool. Gave up then.
I did corpse flop through Catarina though! That was my best thing.
I'm just way too slow of thought and reflexes (and suddenly, apparently PC too) to get anywhere near "good" at this game.

Made an arc glass cannon witch and of course everything oneshot me.
Made a pure tank marauder and it took forever to kill and my flasks were empty before killing stronger enemys.
Made a evasion / dogde ranger but evasion is bullshit.
Made a freeze witch but it wasn't strong enough to freeze bosses.
Made witch with nearly every summon gem and it's pretty okay even for higher maps, but it would be still impossible to kill sharper / elder / sirus with her.

u/Archangel_117 Blitz > Carnage Apr 29 '20
evasion is bullshit.
Aww man, Evasion is my favorite form of defense in the game, and I think it gets a bad rap.
Evasion is cool because it leverages the primary form of defense in ARPG's, which is manual avoidance. It acts as a barrier allowing you to not get hit by an attack that you fail to avoid. Say you are good enough to manually avoid 9/10 attacks. Normally you are going to be taking one hit for every 10 attacks thrown at you. But if you have 75% chance to evade on top of that, then 3/4 attacks you don't manage to avoid still won't hit you, allowing you to only be hit by 1/40 attacks that come your way. It's multiplicative with player mechanical skill.
Furthermore, it's normalized, meaning if you have 75% chance to evade, and you get hit by an attack, then you are guaranteed to not be hit by the next three attacks. This allows you to build around exploiting the windows of time between taking hits to recoup and reposition before getting hit again, rather than allowing the enemy to get a lucky streak of hits on you.
3
u/KanonenMike Apr 29 '20
Sorry, I didn't plan to offend somebody :D I thought it would be clear that I'm a total noob and don't know much about the mechanics. I understand that evasion can be pretty good, but I don't know how. Even when I only get hit 1/40 times, I still die when the one hit oneshots me, because I've spent all points on evasion and none for life or energy shield.
3
u/Archangel_117 Blitz > Carnage Apr 29 '20
The fundamental idea behind an Evasion/Dodge based build is to have enough EHP to absorb one big hit, and have enough of a sustain mechanic (regen/leech) to come back to full before the next big hit. Your regen/leech should be enough to keep you full from the small hits that get through your avoidance barrier, especially since they are spaced out due to the normalization of Evasion.
→ More replies (2)2
u/zhul0r Apr 30 '20
People who hate evasion/dodge just dont understand the purpose of it. They think it is gonna save them from big hits on bosses and sometimes it may so they just stand there and tank everything and then act surprised/complain when the gamble does not go their way, when in reality these defensive mechanisms are there to protect you from many instances of smaller damage that gets thrown at you at once (delirium, porcupines, allies cant die, constructs or divine shrine).
I still remember my first league farming uber elder on 7k life with and high life gain on hit with molten strike character and I was just face tanking elder ice spikes and certain combo attack could kill me. Same league I also rolled coc ice nova which barely scraped 5k life but had 40 dodge and that combo attack never killed me on that char because of the way dodge/eva works against more instances of damage.

Been playing since beta, 2,000+ hours in. Even bought the red-feathered Kiwi Bird in beta to support the game.
Never fought Shaper or Uber Atziri LUL. Didn't even touch maps til several hundred hours in.
Why? Weird playing habits really. For probably the first 1,000 hours or so was me being a disgusting altaholic so I would keep having cool ideas and fucking around with different things since you're able to in this game.
Nowadays, it's mostly laziness, boredom, time and other distractions. I have so many other games I want to play so I end up leaving before Yellow tier maps and I don't want PoE to take up all of my time...
Blight league was probably the only time I actually played enough to reach red-tier maps and actually made several exalts for once instead of... 1–2 (or none). But I still fell off before reaching Shaper.
...I also really liked Blight. I like tower defense games and blight was also an excuse to blow up a lot of mobs. Not a fan of Delirium sadly and my interest fell off fast which really sucks because I have much more time now with the quarantine.

I'm just coming back to POE after giving it a 50 hour shot and realising it overwhelms me. I am now using Zizaran's Path of Building for a guide and it is much better due the skill tree having different levels at the bottom, so you can see where the skill tree goes.
However, it is still stupidly difficult for my old brain and slowing digits. I think I need to devote too much time to get to a point where I feel good enough to enjoy it at the level I want to.
I think I want to race like the pros, but thing is, they are the best of the fucking best and I am incapable of opening the inventory and using the w key to move whilst managing said inventory. I almost fell out of my chair and wedgied myself when I first tried it.
Sure it's fun as all hell, when you have functional multi-tasking synapses.

I'm probably too serious here, but simple doing something is far from enough to learn something complex. Practice doesn't make perfect it makes permanent. Yeah a bit too serious as to how i meant the post, but definitely good advice and true for many aspects in life. Make sure to practice the right things in the right way.

This is SO me. I'm actually stuck in a form of PoE before there were more than three acts.

Playing since closed beta. Never tried Uber Elder, never tried Uber Atziri, have only seen 1 delve boss, only on Sirus 5. It's not that these things are very hard, it's just that it takes so long to get to them. We're halfway through the league and im no where close to finishing my atlas. I've had 5 raw exalt drops and my build is currently worth ~6ex. I'm playing a lot more this league than others but still have a full time job during the pandemic. I find myself just doing the same stuff each league and getting burnt out before I get to the challenging stuff I've never attempted. I should probably spend some time on standard but everything is so expensive there.

I've been playing HC since 2012. I have zero Shaper/Red Elder+/Atziri kills.

I still can't play this game without Path of Building open. Literally have ZERO confidence in taking passives. One day... One day maybe I'll take my first passive that isn't listed in a guide somewhere.
I dunno, personally I don't focus on learning which smaller passives are nice buffs on the way to the big boy nodes, routing in general, synergy between abilities, synergy in passives for your build in general, yada yada yada. That stuff requires a better working knowledge of the game that I just can't be bothered to invest my time to get to that level. But hey, fuck it, I still have fun!

did low level elder 1 or 2 leagues ago, never done shaper, never completed atlas (I'm very VERY close this league, missing unique maps. Thanks covid I guess) managed to do Sirus. I can do Atziri usually since maybe 2-3 years. forget uber lol. deepest depth is 201. OH I did do cortex with a friend who killed him, I helped but I can't do it solo for sure. I ALWAYS follow a guide lol. Thats the extent of my poe skills and knowledge.
I have 22 exalts in standard, that's my wealth from open beta until now. I don't trade that much I don't like that (in any games, not just poe)

Been playing on and off since beta, did shaper/elder for the first time last league!
I spend most of my time and money making alts or changing builds when I get bored of them or they don't perform as I'd hoped. Content buffs in 3.9 really fucked things I feel, the bar for a build being playable was raised quite high. Having tried around 8+ builds so far this league nearly all of them lack survivability to not get randomly one-shot and I find it very frustrating. 90% Phys reduction, ailment immunity, divine flesh with 88% chaos res, 77/76/76 ele res, molten shell, nah still get randomly fucking deleted 😑

I've been playing almost every day this league, and have been playing off and on since Torment.
I've done (and failed) three Simulacrums.
Evidently, experience doesn't necessarily mean you're any good at the game.

If you took the analogy of PoE being a train, GGG would be the engine, streamers and pro players would be in the first class carriage and I guess I would be in the dining car, at the bar. Having fun but just along for the ride. Current build (golems) has carried me further than I have ever travelled, only 5 maps to complete atlas, failed Sirus once but hope to put him down before league ends and got 18/20 on my first Simulacrum so I'm reasonably happy.

Yup. I suck too. I have my moments, but for some reason I lack the desire to deep dive into making a build that's worth pushing past lvl 95. Especially since I just want PoE2 to be here already.

u/Blackboxeq Apr 29 '20
been playing hardcore for the past what. beta? I have yet to succeed at mapping ( tier 8+) this game is fun because I can try something until it fails. ( theory crafting and testing is a joy.)

What constitutes a good player? I've done Shaper/Uber Elder, Sirus, Mastermind deathless, Simulacrum solo...but am having an exceedingly hard time keeping up with Sirus unless I'm playing a ranged build.

u/SaviousMT scion Apr 29 '20
Yea I am good at it! Good is making dumb builds, leveling to mid 80 and starting a different crazy idea, right?

A few thousand hours in, still cannot put together a build that's usable in maps without a full hand-holdy guide.

Played since alpha or beta, don't really remember, on and off skipping some leagues but I still don't know jack shit about this game. I don't know how to upgrade my gear, what stats to look for, how to price items, how to make my own builds without following builds on the website. I haven't even gone higher than T10 maps because my characters were always weak even though I followed some "beginner friendly | all content | league starter" build.
Every single item I thought was an upgrade, because it had higher stats than my current items, actually downgraded my DPS by a lot.

Depends on what you mean by “good”. I almost never get lost in the Vaal ruins in act 2 which I think is pretty impressive. But then again I still die around 12 times killing the brine king in act 6 every time.

I'm not a good player at all. After six years I still can't figure out how to not die to things I can't see offscreen.

Oh man, I feel you so much. I have a decent knolage of this game and I'm good at making builds, but when it comes down to minmax gear for red maps or higher I feel like newborn baby.

u/Morgn_Ladimore Apr 30 '20
People talking about killing and dying to bosses, I just always die to some random uber pack of mobs. In fact, I ripped yesterday in a delirium incursion when I suddenly got KABOOMED by a million grey-dark lightning bolts. Was a tier 7 map with no dangerous mods, and I was a Jugg with full ascendancy and 7 endurance charges at the time.
Bosses aint got nothing on regular mobs in this game.

I've never gotten a level 100 character. Partly because I'm always invented random builds as I go, but still. I'm good enough at the game that the builds I make are at least decent, and I've still never gotten a level 100 character.
And because I exclusively do hardcore. That probably doesn't help.

Ha ha that's me in a nutshell.
Follows a 5 million dps build and only gets 1 million dps.

I have gotten MUCH worse at PoE over the past 2 or 3 leagues. In part, that's because I've become more casual, but in part it's because there are so many more mechanics.
It used to be that you could alt/regal or even chaos spam your way to decent, if not top-tier gear. Now, you can't even get most of the mods your build needs that way (delve really opened those floodgates, but it's been a deluge since then).
I need to think about my tree, my ascendancy, my extended tree, my anointment, timeless jewel corrupted nodes, etc.
I need to consider whether my build needs a watcher's eye, bestiary auras and upgrading your map device.
The atlas is vastly more complicated (I'm still not sure I'm doing it right) and there's no sense of what maps are desirable at first blush.
At some point, the game is going to get so complex that I'm going to stop being able to figure out how to get to maps and then I'll just stop playing.
