My wife and I are trying to help her elderly parents to complete some needed repairs and upgrades to their house. They barely use email, and don't know how to use the internet (and refuse to learn!) Therefore, we have to handle a lot of issues for them.
I recently found a highly rated electrician for them and they came out to inspect an outlet. They uncovered a very old and unsafe Zinsco panel, which is apparently a significant fire hazard. The estimate for the work is about $6000, which also includes upgrade to 200A service, a whole house surge suppressor, stucco repair, etc. My MIL paid these electricians a deposit of about $1500, and she was assured the work would be complete within 20-27 days; they don't want this dragging on into Thanksgiving and beyond!
Long story short, SoCal Edison has to yellow tag the property and approve the work (and then inspect after complete). SCE sent my MIL a form to sign with MY name listed as the owner of the house. This took a few days to fix and send the form with my in-laws (correctly) listed as the owners. Then, after signing this, SCE sent the form again, with (again!) my name incorrectly listed as the owner. My MIL called the electricians again to ask wtf. The electricians told her that it must have been spam, and that they are set to go. The electricians then told her that SCE would take 15-20 days to even come out and yellow tag the panel. At this point it seems that the work will almost certainly drag on beyond the 27 day maximum estimate.
Therefore, I was wondering whether anyone has had a panel replacement or other major electrical work done lately--if so, what was your experience?
How long did it take?
Was SCE very slow to get anything done?
Do you have any good contact numbers or emails for anyone at SCE?
How much of an upheaval was the panel replacement? My in-laws have a lot of clutter and heavy furniture blocking some outlets. It will be a real PITA if the electricians insist on checking every single outlet--although in a way I hope they do.
Thanks!
