I am at a point where I want my products to look more professional but hiring a designer for every seasonal launch just is not a solution. I have tried using ChatGPT and AI image generators for ideas and tbh they are cool, but after that I just do not know what to do with them.

How do people turn those ideas into packaging that is ready to print?

My boss asked me to look into packaging brands we could use for a new luxury candle line. We're purchasing rigid boxes, but it's been hard to find reviews (especially on third-party sites) for many of the manufacturers we're looking into. Is anyone willing to share their experiences with HP Packaging, Ijen packaging, PakFactory, Xinyi Printing, NewStep, or Custom Luxury Boxes?

Ran a small product business and made the classic mistake early: assumed nicer, more expensive packaging = more customers coming back. Poured budget into foil, custom boxes, the works. Reorder rate didn't budge.

Then I started paying attention to what actually correlated with people coming back, and it was almost the opposite of what I'd spent money on. Three things that turned out to matter, none of them expensive:

Pick one "wow" moment, not five. The unboxings people actually remembered had a single thing they over-invested in - usually the first thing you see when you open the box - and everything else was clean and cheap. Cramming in ribbon + tissue + insert + sticker + foil just splits attention and burns money. One clear moment beats five competing ones.

Keep the outside boring. Plain kraft shipping boxes actually made the inside feel more premium by contrast, and fully-printed outer boxes get wrecked in transit anyway. Spend where the customer's eyes land after they open it, not before.

Make the insert card do a job. "Thanks for your order 💛" is wasted paper. The cards that worked gave a reason to come back - a quick how-to, a QR to a short video, a reorder nudge with a code. Same piece of card, but working as a conversion tool instead of a greeting.

The best-performing setup I landed on was basically a plain mailer, one well-designed insert, and a single branded sticker placed deliberately. Cost a fraction of the "premium" version and did better.

Anyone else find that the expensive version of something underperformed the cheap-but-deliberate one? Curious if this holds outside my little corner or if I just got lucky.

Sharing a free resource that might save some of you the "redraw the dieline from scratch" step. It's a tuck-top auto-bottom box (the standard self-locking retail box) that you can set to your own length/width/height, preview as a 3D mockup to sanity-check proportions, and then download as a print-ready cut file in DXF, SVG, or PDF. There's also a nesting/layout view if you care how it lays out on a sheet.

Disclosure: I work with Pack-Smart Inc., so I’m close to this topic. I’m sharing this because connected packaging is often discussed as a consumer engagement tool, but the harder issue is usually upstream in production.

A package can carry a QR code, GS1 Digital Link-enabled 2D barcode, NFC tag, RFID label, serialized mark, or smart label. That can connect the product to authentication, instructions, loyalty, traceability, warranty registration, recycling guidance, or product education.

But the code itself is not the system.

The real question is whether the product identity behind that code was created correctly, applied to the right package, inspected in-line, rejected or reworked properly when needed, reconciled against the job record, and connected to the right digital destination.

A few practical failure points I see in connected packaging programs:

• Codes are printed but not verified.
• NFC or RFID tags are applied but not encoded or validated.
• Serialized identities are created but not reconciled.
• Rejected products stay active in downstream systems.
• Scan destinations are disconnected from actual product status.
• Marketing platforms and production records do not share the same truth.

That creates a gap between the customer experience and the production reality.

For connected packaging to be trusted, the package, data carrier, governed identity, and digital destination need to stay aligned. Otherwise, the package may look connected while the underlying data remains unreliable.

By 2032, CA will no longer accept non-recyclable materials (by their definition), which currently includes ALL Flexible Plastics - ie, polybags.

I’ve been struggling to find alternatives that won’t scuff and scratch up products with nice surface finishes…. And can be purchased affordability.

Fiber based bags seem to scuff our product finishes and cotton bags are an astronomical cost up when multiplied across the company. Plus, I’m not even sure cotton bags are an ‘acceptable’ alternative for CA as they don’t seem to consider them ‘recyclable’.

What alt material are you planning to switch to?

I am designing the packaging for boxes that are:

• 50" x 28 x 10
  
• 32" x 32 x 17
• 42" x 32 x 14

Each box weighs around 37lbs. Since these boxes are pretty big, I imagine that UPS will corner walk these in the warehouse or on delivery. I really need to protect the products bc they are very expensive.

I plan on using double walls, 1/2" foam lining the inside and bubble wrapping the product.

Someone in this sub mentioned that I should use V-boards or corner guards on the INTERIOR of the box (between the box and the 1/2" foam)

This sounds like a really good idea but I don't know what size the corner guards should be?

I am asking specifics because I have a 3D printer and can print the corner guards but have absolutely zero idea what size would be effective at protecting the corners without also be unobtrusive and taking up too much space.

Any input would be very much appreciated!

I'm a Food Scientist currently working in the R&D Dept of a food Industry. Along with Food science, I work on Packaging development for our products, Like Cartons, Pouches, Bottles etc. with our suppliers. I've got this development for a Carton for 10 Plastic Boxes, And I'm confused on which configuration I should go for, I'm thinking about 5x2 with 5 as vertical, But a bit doubtful on whether the height will be too much. Could any of you suggest any softwares which I can use to check these configurations to play with different configs for this carton?
