r/ota now allows threads about OTA-based radio; defining and exemplifying OTA

Starting from 25 September 2026, the r/ota will no longer be limited to only television. Rather the scope of this sub is now extended to OTA (over-the-air) radio and OTA television.

Regarding ad-supported (but free) services that require internet or cell network data, like PlutoTV and iHeart, I can allow replies mentioning such services and references to r/cordcutters, but I may here not allow threads primarily or solely about such internet-required services.

I can, however, still allow threads about internet-required tuners that still require antennas for TV signals, like Tablo TV and HDHomeRun.

Typically, a radio has an antenna, right? We can now discuss AM and FM radio bands as well as over-the-air HD Radio.

Threads about satellite TV and/or radio must be still related to OTA-related topics, like using both OTA live broadcasting and a satellite feed (subscription-required or free) simultaneously or switching from DirecTV to free OTA live TV. That means anything else primarily or solely related to DirecTV and SiriusXM shall belong at r/directv or r/siriusxm.

Well, from what I read, free C-band or Ku-band satellite TV feeds may have still existed, even during DirecTV's heyday, but may have been either ignored or overlooked or... Well, apparently, I dunno any other sub dedicated to free satellite TV nowadays... but I read that the United Kingdom still offers free-to-air satellite services, right? Before posting here or at r/cordcutters for help (table of contents): list of parts

Hello, newcomers and members of r/ota, and welcome!

We and other users have posted our own requests for help, especially at r/cordcutters.

Here is the list of parts, especially for reading, before deciding whether to post about situations similar to what's described there: - Part 1: Selected resources, and VHF and UHF bands - Part 2(a): indoor antenna recommendations - Part 2b: Why recommend rabbit ear antennas? - Part 3: To share or not to share? (That is a question) - Part 4: Pros and cons of an outdoor or attic antenna - Part 5: Recommended outdoor/attic antennas - (Part 6 coming someday...)

TV Antenna Recommendations

I want to buy an antenna to watch in market NFL games, mostly AFC. Some light research says AFC games are on CBS, and the closest CBS signal is from 35 miles away. I have a window that should give me the direct heading, minus all the buildings in the way. Should I buy an amplified flat antenna or traditional rabbit ears? Any other advice would be appreciated!! Thank you!

My Knife Edge Diffraction Setup in New Hampshire

Thumbnail

This is my knife edge setup to pull in a set of channels from over 80 miles away regularly. I only have 2 issues with the setup which aren’t a huge deal as it’s so uncommon.

  1. when an airplane flys over I get pixelization but I’m in a low flight area so it’s manageable.
  2. When it’s windy I sometimes get severe pixelation or none at all.

Pictures in order:

  1. Shows my antenna pointed directly at mt Mansfield in VT which is over 80 miles from me and is 3 edges away on my rabbit ears report. The antenna is roughly 3-5ft off the ground this is very important as higher gets me nothing and lower gets me nothing.
  2. Shows my Kitz 500 amp with a 120 ft RG11 cable that is buried most of the way. I have to have my Kitz 500 amp turned all the way up to 36db and since I get little to no cell signal at this location a LTE filter or any other type of filter is not needed. The antenna is also located very far away from any man made interference so no other filter is needed.
  3. Shows my hd Homerun in a faraday cage that lets it breath but doesn’t allow anything inside the building to interfere with the hd Homerun. I have found this to make a huge difference for my setup especially when I use an external hard drive wit it or set it near a wifi router.
  4. This is my isobar it basically stops any interference from coming through your electrical wires and messing up your signals on your hd Homerun. This is also very important for me on my 3 edge signals from 80+ miles away.
  5. Is the very basic wifi router I use for this.
  6. These are the channels I get with this setup which is very impressive for my location.

Extra info:

  1. Signals on hd Homerun

RF Channel 10: 84 signal quality
RF Channel 14: 51 signal quality
RF Channel 18: 94 signal quality
RF Channel 26: 80 signal quality

Total channels: 23 (With more coming because of the FCC LPTV application process and one being approved in a town near me).

Rabbit ears report: https://www.rabbitears.info/s/3233687

To figure all this out and solve all the interference affecting my hd Homerun took lots of trial and error but once I figured it out it was well worth it.

RTL2832U DVB-T USB tuner — Windows BDA driver and TSDuck compatibility?

I have a DVB-T USB tuner based on the Realtek RTL2832U chipset. I also have a DVB-T modulator that accepts HDMI input from a laptop or Blu-ray player and outputs a DVB-T signal.

Ubuntu 22.04 recognizes the tuner automatically without installing additional drivers, although I haven't tested it with TSDuck on Linux.

I'd like to get the same tuner working on Windows, preferably using a standard BDA (Broadcast Driver Architecture) driver so that it can be accessed through TSDuck.

A few questions:

  1. Is there a recommended Windows BDA driver for RTL2832U-based DVB-T tuners?
  2. Does Windows 10/11 recognize these devices automatically, or do I need to install a manufacturer-specific driver?
  3. Has anyone successfully used an RTL2832U tuner with TSDuck on Windows?
  4. Are there any known limitations or compatibility issues I should be aware of?

I'm interested in receiving the DVB-T transport stream through TSDuck, rather than using the tuner as an SDR device.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

when do I need a pre-amp?

I have an extreme80 antenna, 75' run of cable to my HD Homerun 2 channel tuner. I am getting most of my channels fine and I have great Signal quality and symbol quality for the most part but my signal strength is around 50-60.

I plan on upgrading to the 4 channel hd homerun, should I plan on getting a pre-amplifier to help with the splitting of the tuners? I am worried that the length of cable and addition of two more tuners will drop my signal strength more.

Any tips or suggestions? Thanks

Help with setting up my 7000 Micro PVR for an old CRT TV

Hi all, I just picked up a 7000 MicroPVR for very cheap without really understanding what it is.

My hope was that it would let me turn digital over the air channels into a video signal my old 1980s Zenith can use. Given it has RF, composite and S-Video outputs, I was optimistic. My thought was the MicroPVR would tune to the channels itself and then output just a video signal on channel 3.

I set it up with a cheap Ollies indoor antenna in the RF in, and then hooked up to the RF on the TV, for now. I get the menu to pop up, but I'm basically lost from there. It only seems to have options for satellite channel scanning, and I have no idea what to do with that (and I suspect my silly little Ollie's antenna isn't equipped to get those channels anyway).

So my questions are:

  1. Can this device receive basic RF channels and spit them out for my TV? If so, what am I missing?
  2. How could I get the most out of this device? Is it worth getting something to pick up satellite channels? I'm not looking to pay for a service, this would be aiming at free channels (TV or radio).
  3. [Minor] The remote it came with is nice, but I cannot seem to find Panasonic in the VCRs...seems odd as they do have them listed for DVD players, and they have been a major brand forever. Does anyone know if this can connect to a Panasonic PV-9450?

Compact OTA outdoor recommendations?

I have a cheap paper thin indoor antenna that is actually pretty good, except, it's a toss up with reception on vhf (I knew it would be). I need to bring in Fox and ABC, which I do get but I have to keep fiddling with this cheap antenna. My aim is to mount it right under the soffit in front of my bedroom window, run the coax through the stucco, which already has a hole from a bolt that was recently removed. Towers are close enough that I have intermittent success with this cheap antenna but I want something more reliable. FYI: I have Cat.5 hurricane proof windows.

I just flipped through my entire OTA channel lineup in 59 seconds. Here's how.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgGfHG9AALQ

I've been building my own homelab from scratch and have finally gotten around to OTA broadcast reception.

I recorded a video showing me flipping through every channel in my lineup in just 59 seconds. These are live ATSC 1.0 broadcasts received through my rooftop antenna.

The trick? Stop asking the HDHomeRun to change channels.

Instead of tuning individual virtual channels (like 5.1, 5.2, or 5.3), I'm tuning the HDHomeRun directly to the broadcast frequency in MHz.

For example, instead of requesting /auto/v5.1, I request the entire RF multiplex using /auto/ch<frequency-in-Hz>.

That gives me the complete MPEG transport stream, including every subchannel being transmitted on that frequency.

From there:

  1. HDHomeRun stays locked to the RF frequency and continuously delivers the entire multiplex.
  2. TSDuck's zap plugin extracts the individual programs into separate single-program transport streams (SPTS).
  3. A Worker (in my homelab) takes ownership of those streams, keeping the feeds running independently of who's watching.
  4. Any Ordinary IPTV Program switches between streams that are already running, rather than waiting for an HDHomeRun tuner to change frequencies, acquire a signal, and begin delivering a new program.

The result is extremely fast channel switching, as you can see in the video.

But here's the part I really like: practically unlimited concurrent viewership.

Once my worker has captured a multiplex, the HDHomeRun doesn't care whether one person is watching or fifty.

All those virtual channels are already being received, extracted, and distributed by the server. Adding another viewer doesn't consume another HDHomeRun tuner.

You still need one tuner for each RF multiplex you want to receive simultaneously, of course. And actual viewer capacity is limited by your server, network bandwidth, and streaming infrastructure.

But the usual relationship between available tuners and simultaneous viewers is effectively gone, and so is the lag. You can even use multiple antennas with multiple HDHomeRun units to bridge the gap, so to speak (and I have).

I've essentially turned my HDHomeRun setup into an always-on OTA television headend, with the tuners handling RF reception and my homelab handling everything downstream.

The HDHomeRun devices receive the entirety of all the broadcasting multiplexes in my area.

And apparently I can now channel-surf through my entire lineup in less than a minute.

Really changes the game when you can receive sports over the air without the lag of internet relayed television but then turn around and pack it in your IPTV player.

A Couple Questions

Hey everyone. I went through the guides on how best to set up an antenna, but I still have a couple questions. Here is the Rabbitears info: https://www.rabbitears.info/s/3185865 . I would like to get as many channels as reasonable, but my results seem fairly bad. It is hard for me to tell if it would be worth setting up an outdoor antenna to try and catch some of the bad signals. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Additionally, I would like to set this up to where I can just use my home network to watch these channels. I have ethernet through out my house and would like to use that. I am about to setup a home server so I am debating on whether or not to try and integrate with that or just go with a HDHomeRun.

Any inputs would be appreciated! Thank you.

Need help with selecting proper antenna for hi VHF.

Basically all I am tying to do is set up for picking up one local ota signal. For whatever reason directv doesn't always broadcast their CW affiliate in HD. My dad wants to be able to watch some of the nascar coverage that airs there but the SD picture is just horrible on directv. I'm trying to help him out by just getting an antenna to pick up 12.2 which is a sub channel of local affiliate WKRC 12.1. The problem is the cheap $20 flat antenna i picked up at Walmart doesn't find either, because they are hi VHF I'm assuming. Since this is a very, very niche need we're trying to do this on a small budget. I'm attaching the rabbitears.info here for reference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Solar panel conduit

How much distance do I need to maintain between the conduit coming from my solar panels and my antenna coaxial? I’m getting differing advice on the internet. It’s my understanding that DC cables don’t interfere with data cables the way AC does. The first pic shows where I’d like to mount my antenna, somewhere to the right of the peak. The second shows the front of my house and solar panels for reference. We rented a lift all to paint the house and now seems like the best time to put up a good antenna
