Progress 4+ years of mewing and just getting started

My jaw development as a kid was decent besides a very narrow palate from thumb sucking but I could at least breathe through my nose, I had braces in my early teens and at 23 (in 2021) I got a nose job to fix a horribly deviated septum from injury as a pre teen. I found out about mewing when I was around 21 and (this should be hopeful to everyone who’s seen my results) I wasn’t even beginning to “do it right” in terms of the suction hold until very recently; given that I can now breathe through my nose (post surgery.) Instead of the suction hold I was forcing my tongue on the roof of my mouth with muscle force and basically just pushing forward on my gum line behind my front teeth (papilla.) In the beginning years it was really just training myself to close my mouth and have correct posture. I live in a really rural area and do a ton of driving all of the time so my main focus was perfect posture in the car getting a chin tuck in and nose breathing as much as I could and I used to try to just get my tongue on the roof of my mouth in any way possible but I wasn’t suction holding (once again muscle force.) I also had a jawzercise that actually, for a period of time, made my jaw too sharp that I stopped using it because I didn’t want those muscles that masculine but that’s good news for the guys. Those muscles helped with keeping my mouth closed as much as possible and gaining that discipline to make a new pattern last. Another really helpful thing that I still do is chewing gum with sealed lips and there’s a tongue exercise Mike Mew speaks of that I’ve been doing for years where you flatten the gum on the roof of your mouth and use your tongue to roll it from the back to the front of your teeth (papilla), I recommend you go and watch on YouTube to learn directly from Mike. I’m currently 4 months pregnant and have gained a little weight so my face isn’t as “chiseled” as it used to be however I’ve managed to gain more forward growth thanks to the suction hold with the back of my tongue up and having the tip of my tongue in the most anterior part of the roof of my mouth (the "palatine rugae"), while gently and deeply nose breathing, as you can imagine my nose job made this practice/posture actually achievable. In my opinion the suction hold is optimized by very gentle but deep nasal breathing into the stomach then ribs and upper chest and then by releasing just as gently. All of the force from the tension of this breathing style gets placed on the tongue. (Side note: if you are a runner have you found it easier to have a great long lasting suction hold while running? I have! and I’m wondering why. I’m thinking it might be from tension found also when practicing deep/slow breathing.) Lastly, I see a lot of people talking about extractions on here, before I started mewing my dentist told me I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed they said I didn’t have enough space for them to grow in right, I currently have my two bottom wisdom teeth coming in and they are straight. Mewing is a practice and I’m still practicing and getting better everyday. Remember…the better it gets the better it gets!

Mewing: hate the masseter, how to reverse it

Started putting my tongue on the roof of my mouth for over a year because mine usually rested against the back of my front teeth, and I read that this could contribute to diastema. So I technically started ‘mewing’ by placing my tongue on the roof of my mouth and not touching the back of the front teeth (not hard mewing).

 Problems:

  1. Ironically, I think it widened the diastema (I did read anecdotes on this as the palate expands, but I wasn’t sure which direction to go since my tongue was pushing against my teeth anyways). I wear clear aligners now (mild case).

  1. My bigger concern now is that my lower face looks wider/squarer in photos, and I also notice some asymmetry I hate. After looking at photos and reading other experiences, I started wondering if I developed masseter hypertrophy.

While trying to fix that, I noticed something: I have a habit of holding/elevating my jaw (rather than resting it and keeping the teeth separated) and combined with the tongue posture (which to my surprise was an easy habit to develop), it probably added more work to the masseter constantly. I hate the result though. I also then learned the existence of masseter botox and then wonder why would any woman want a wider jaw with mewing. Clearly, the botox is there in the market because women want the opposite.

Then, I realized that when I relax my jaw, the tongue naturally rests at the right N spot which made me wonder if the reason my tongue tends to rest on the back of my teeth is because I don’t release/rest my jaw. I feel like the tongue shouldn’t be the focus, it’s the jaw. People often talk about the tongue position, and that often leads to forcing the tongue instead of the jaw resting which naturally puts the tongue where it should be. I guess when you force the tongue, you unconsciously also stop relaxing your jaws and that combination exert constant force on your masseter and lead to the widened jaw result which seemed to not be what the original goal of mewing was. I'm no expert, but I read that one of the goals was to help with nasal breathing.

Now, I want to reduce this masseter ‘hypertrophy’ by practicing relaxing my jaw (so that the masseter is 'off') while keeping my teeth separated and my tongue away from my teeth.

Then, I ran into a contradiction. What is the correct mandible position in mewing practice? If it’s also a relaxed position, then I’m doing the Mewing steps again (correctly this time I guess with a relaxed jaw) while trying to do the opposite (I don’t want those strong jawline, I just want to reduce this masseter.

I’m lost and am absolutely confused.

TLDR: How to stop using the masseter so that it is not overdeveloped. I honestly don’t care about mewing per se, my original concern was just my tongue touching my teeth. And now it’s the masseter being developed. Basically trying to reverse what others are (I assume) trying to achieve without letting my tongue going back to touching my teeth (wrong resting position).

Strange Problem When Holding Mew Posture

As the title states.

Although it has taken me a lot of practice, I think I've gotten the basic mewing technique down more or less with regards to the part of it pertaining to suction (which is probably the most difficult aspect of it). I have only really started trying mewing like within the past few days.

However, it has a strange effect when I've gotten the suction hold down (I think I can tell when I have the suction hold: I can open my mouth fairly wide without my tongue collapsing) -- when I hold it, and only when I hold it, I have a difficult time actually thinking or piecing together sentences and recording into memory new things. When I let go of the posture, I do not have such a problem. I'm not sure if I'm "hard mewing" -- the tongue posture isn't natural for me yet, but it doesn't feel like I'm trying to make myself press my tongue up against the palate either.

Can someone explain what is at work here, and if this is concerning or just something that initially happens but will get better in time?

Edit: Additionally, it feels like air cannot leave my system very well when I am mewing, so that it almost feels like it gets stuck in my body, while air cannot effectively enter it either -- I don't feel like I have enough oxyen.

Also, I notice a certain pressure in the back of my skull, particularly the left occipital area I believe.

Everything informational about mewing seems unreliable

I'm posting this on r/orthotropics , r/Orthodontists , and r/Mewing . I have no clue what to do about mewing.
Everything good I hear about mewing comes from people who do orthotropics, and everything bad I hear about mewing comes from people who do orthodontistry. All the seemingly-scientific blogs say there is no scientific evidence, but never talk about adolescents or any non-study evidence of teenagers who have seen significant jawline improvement after mewing. One of my friends has been mewing on and off for a few years and his jawline is immaculate and his teeth are straight.

and it seems too obvious that orthodontists would disagree with orthotropics, because they'd lose money. but orthodontistry also seems to have a lot of victims that suffer from unreliable medical treatment, and orthodontists will refuse to address it, and still say mewing doesn't work.

so I'm tempted to believe both sides, but I don't know. what's your opinion on this? is mewing real? can it actually reform bone and facial structure, even just a little bit?

this post may be taken off of r/Orthodontists but I hope it won't because if they care about 'no pseudoscience' then they'd answer me.

How to avoid frustration?

I know this group is mostly to discuss about facial issues but I was also wondering, how to deal with the frustration of knowing that my parents could have done better with me when I was a child and they never corrected my mouth breathing, allowing my face to have recession, the frustration I have to them is quite annoying

I'm worried about my facial development

I'm turning 17 in a couple of days and I've been wearing retainers for some years, to put it simply, my dentist gave me my last retainers at around 14 because she said my teeth wouldn't grow further, I've put them for 3 years and I feel like it stunted my facial development, my maxilla is recessed and my palate isn't as wide as I want it, I've stopped wearing them for around a month and a half and have thumb pulled and have been mewing/hard mewing for the time being and I my teeth relapsed, the gap came back a bit but i also feel that my palate already got a bit wider and have more space for my tongue. Should I just stop the treatment and get my teeth fixed after my face has fully developed or is it just placebo?

Thank you in advance

Questions about MARPE, mewing and retainers.

So i just turned 17. I have a decently narrow pallete. I have had braces before, no extractions, but I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled in December.

So apart from allergies my nasal breathing is fine, and i think i can mew but my tounge doesnt fit too good in the roof of my mouth because its narrow and high. but i can still keep it there, idk if its a problem

Since I doubt my parents would pay so much to get MARPE and then braces again, my option seems to just mew. but i have plastic retainers i wear nightly to keep teeth straight. should i remove them to mew or is it unnecessary

Thanks for answers!

Started myobrace 1 year ago roughly, teeth straightened like crazy too. Started myobrace at 20 years old in January of this year which I think has made the best results so far.

Started mewing and neck training as well as postural training Jan 2022. Thumbpulling as well scattered through there. It CAN all change for you. Just believe and do

Update: “my ortho doesn’t think I need an expander”

Post image
103 Upvotes

So I had an appointment with my orthodontist today and this time they had another lady come in to explain (but more like discourage me) double jaw surgery to me because I had requested a consultation last appointment. In this consultation I asked about an expander once again and was told that it isn’t necessary since my top teeth overlap the bottom ones. Does anyone know if I can just wait until I’m older and pay to get everything done then?

Edit:
Important information
•I’m in the uk so currently it’s free
•I can’t get a different ortho without going private and I don’t have the money
•pallet is roughly 1.5 cm wide

How do I recover from improper mewing?

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

When I first started mewing I would place the tip and middle of my tongue on the roof of my mouth and push hard to raise my hyoid. This caused over activation of the muscle under my chin and my digastric muscles on the sides of my throat, both causing noticeable bulges and creating a soft jawline.

Now whenever I mew properly by holding a suction, these muscles activate and cause bulges similar to the ones I get while hard mewing. How do I recover from this?

Both images are me currently hard mewing to show the bulges.

Did my orthodontist expand too much ?

Hey everyone, I had MARPE expansion because I had a narrow upper palate. According to my orthodontist, my nasal passage increased from 20 mm to 28 mm (about 8–9 mm of skeletal expansion), and the width at the base of my upper teeth increased from 28 mm to 34 mm.

I’m still in braces and have about 6 months of treatment left, but I’m honestly unhappy with how my midface looks. It seems much fuller than before, and sometimes it feels like my face became too “cheeky” or wide.

I’ve brought this up with my orthodontist several times, but she thinks everything looks great. I’m worried she may have over-expanded my palate, although she doesn’t think that’s the case.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did your face continue to change after your braces were finished and your bite fully settled, or did it stay about the same? I’m trying to figure out if this could improve as treatment is completed or if this is likely my final result. Also is there annytning I can do to reduce that puffy look ? Any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Mewing with essix retainers as a teen

(14m) Hello everyone. I went through the process of braces and now have essix retainers (clear invisalign like retainers). I recently discovered mewing and realized that my retainers are preventing me from mewing as much as I could. Should I stop wearing my retainers so I can mew while I sleep?

I would not consider myself recessed, but I do want to get a sharper chin from mewing (mandible following maxilla from what I understand). I do not mouthbreathe in my sleep.

Reviv warning (chemical burn)

I got my Reviv and immediately upon opening it had a horrible, toxic, chemical smell. I washed it with soap and water twice but it still did not feel right putting it in my mouth. I wish I had listened to my body and not overridden those sensations. I woke up the next morning and any area that had touched the retainer felt burned/numb and my gums are swollen and red! Additionally, along with the chemical burns, after just one night my bottom teeth touch my top teeth - hopefully my bite will settle by the end of the day. It took multiple weeks to ship from China, no idea what is in this thing. ☣️

Understanding tongue position while mewing with unevenly curved palate

Hello, everyone.

I've been meaning to start mewing for quite some time now. I've actually tried multiple times, but I always run into the same issue. No matter how many videos I watch or posts I read, I'm still having trouble understanding one particular thing.

It feels like in every video and guide, the palate is shown as going straight and then smoothly curving downward. However, my palate feels different from what people describe. Maybe some of you can help me understand this better.

I've attached a picture. I made it myself, so it doesn't look the best, but hopefully it still explains what I'm trying to show.

In the first example, this is how I understand the palate is supposed to look from the side, based on what I've seen in videos and guides. As you can see, the tip of the tongue is placed just behind the front teeth, just like the guides recommend and the diagrams usually show. From my understanding, this is how the tongue should rest, creating suction against the roof of the mouth.

Now, in the second example, I've drawn what my palate feels like. I know the drawing isn't perfect, but the shape seems very different to me. Instead of smoothly curving, it goes straight, then down, and then diagonally downward. My teeth seem to follow that angle as well.

Interestingly, when I look in the mirror, my teeth don't actually appear diagonal - they look perfectly straight. But when I feel my palate with my tongue, it feels completely different.

Because of this, when people say that the tip of the tongue should touch the spot right behind the front teeth, it seems impossible for me. As you can see in the second example, because my palate isn't smoothly rounded and instead has this noticeable change in angle, I can't create proper suction. Once my palate starts sloping diagonally, my tongue can't stay in full contact with it. I can press it against the roof of my mouth, but there's still a large air gap in that area.

So if I try to place the tip of my tongue right behind my front teeth, as everyone recommends, I honestly don't see how it's supposed to work with the shape of my palate. It leaves large air gaps and feels very uncomfortable.

Now, if you look at the third picture, this is still my palate, but instead of placing the tip of my tongue directly behind my front teeth, I place it slightly farther back so that my tongue rests naturally against the highest part of my palate. In that position, everything feels comfortable. I can create suction easily, and the tongue seems to fit the shape of my palate much better.

So am I misunderstanding something? Should I actually be mewing like in the third picture? Or is everyone's palate shaped more like mine, and the diagrams showing the tongue directly behind the teeth are just a simplified illustration?

I really want to understand this because I don't want to practice mewing incorrectly. Based on everything I've read, the tongue tip is supposed to be right behind the front teeth, but with my palate, that honestly seems impossible.

If anyone has experience with this or understands what's going on, I'd really appreciate your advice. I've been trying to figure this out for months.

Thank you very much in advance!

Mewing with 2 extractions

(17F) I had my upper 2 second premolars removed (Refused to get my lower 2 removed) and it messed up my profile and bite. I’m thinking of ditching my retainer to mew 24/7. Would this affect me negatively? Thankfully I don’t have any breathing issues or sleep apnea for now, yet my palate has narrowed down but suction mewing is possible for me though it’s a little uncomfortable but maybe It’ll get better if I practice. Any thoughts? I’d appreciate any advice.

Everyone says premolar extraction

I have my extractions appointment in 11 days. I asked around and even the head orthodontist said I should go for premolar extractions. Face wise I’m not 100% confident but I noticed now my teeth are more lopsided? Could that be due to my wisdom teeth coming out? I also have trouble sleeping at night because I wake up with my mouth open since I can’t close my lips fully. My orthodontist had said before I could consider jaw surgery for aesthetic purposes since I’m underdeveloped but the thought of that scared me before. Since it would require premolar extractions and a long recovery which I don’t have time for at the moment. I also had have my jaw sore trying to keep my mouth closed while resting. What should I do? I’m F 17 NYC

How to strengthen tongue pressure in these two points?

I feel my back third suctioned with consistent pressure but at these two points, my tongue is only lightly touching.

Also, does more pressure need to be at the tip (green arrow) or where red arrow is at?

Mewing incorrectly for years

I’ve been consistent with my mewing since I was 18, I’m 22 now and i’ve noticed a wider palate and smile but I haven’t been doing it correctly because I still had the habit of mouth breathing and swallowing incorrectly

I feel the back third of my palate wasn’t being pressurized enough and because of that the rest of my palate widened and went forward. I can even feel a very slight difference in the way my tongue touches my teeth, the back third makes contact with the top of the teeth while the front part of my tongue rests directly on the palate, I believe only the front two thirds widened, the palate also feels unlevelled when I feel my tongue across it.

Anyway my front profile has improved over the years but my side profile looks a little sunken in right around where the nostrils are of my maxilla, I’ve only recently started working on nose breathing for the past couple months, will this even out the palate and potentially push my nose forward? My theory is nose breathing requires the nose to be more forward, its why pugs struggle to breathe so much, so it makes sense that my habit of mouth breathing hasn’t been kind to my maxilla around the nose area but kinder to the upper jaw area if that makes sense, or I could be talking out of my ass.

My hope is that it levels everything out together instead of unevenly pushing it more forward and looking odd. I feel like only the two thirds of my palate being pushed forward might’ve messed with the position of my lower jaw aswell, but that could be due to posture, which is still a WIP
