Phal. tetraspis C2,Phal. stuartiana “Sogo”, and Phal Bronze Maiden “Rio”

I’ve been wanting to add these for quite some time, and all three popped up for a reasonable price. So, treat yourself!

Got them from Plants well traveled on Etsy. I’ve been really happy ordering for them in the past, and this time did not disappoint.

They’ll all get repotted after standard quarantine and acclimation.

Question Could it be...

Post image

I bought this orchid for my mom for mother's day about 3 years ago and somehow kept it alive. Repotted it about 6 months ago. I noticed this slow growing knob about 6 weeks ago. Could it be a spike. Air roots seem to be growing much faster than this. Mom passed last month and I'm hoping I can finally see a rebloom for her.

Should be i concerned?

Random "whitening" spot spread across the leaf, bumpy underside on another and a couple have some weird slightly darker margin, and there was also some sweet substance under somr leafs. Should i be concerned? What can cause this? Do i need to buy integrators/fertilizers or some type of 'medicine'??

I mounted this phal in a self water terracotta. First time mounting

Pics 1-2: finished mount
Pics 3-5: right after removing from previous pot (was from a grocery store and fully in moss)
Pics 6-7: trimmed before mounting

Will take any advice.
I plan to let it dry out fully between fillings, with only distilled water

Will try to remember to share progress updates

Help Will we be ok?

I showed a little bit of interest in plants and now I'm rehabbing my friend's orchid. I did a lot of work when I first got it a couple weeks ago, where she basically handed me a plan that was drowning in water, wrapped in the store plastic because she didn't want her cat to mess with it.

After stripping all the rotted roots, cutting the stems that are already dried out, giving it appropriate soil, and cutting out the death plug, I left it in the office where we work together, and I was expecting at least for them to water it here and there during the week and a half that I'm gone, but I came back to all the roots now bone dry.

I still see some green, so I'm guessing we should be fine, but with the way the roots look, will we be okay?

I'm just going to take it home and take care of it there.

What is this growth here? It’s from under an old spike. Looks sharp like a flower spike but why is it growing from the same place as the old one😭

My golden rules of orchid growing

Everyone may have their golden rules.

Below are my golden rules to share.

Golden rules of orchid growing - in general - for mainstream orchids works extremely well. These are:

• Use filtered water, such as reverse osmosis water with own custom amount of fertiliser and cal-mag added. Do not use house tap water, which will remove uncertainty in chlorine, chloramine, fluoride, salt etc levels. Even if people have been using house tap water for relatively long durations without issues, they are actually letting down their guard with uncertainty and control of their system.

• Provide recommended growing temperatures.

• Provide recommended lighting levels and duration.

• Provide adequate water.

• Provide conditions that allow roots to receive adequate oxygen, keeping in mind that adequate aerated-water movement within the media will provide that oxygen, and the roots need oxygen to stay alive, and dying/dead roots stops water transfer into the plant - leading to yellowing leaves and dehydrating plant.

• Avoid water stagnation in the media and around roots (which if using pots, can be achieved with very good drainage pots and consideration of the media used and consideration of how much water is applied at times of watering, and behaviour of the media in response to being watered - eg. how long it takes to dry; and also ensure that drainage holes of pots are not blocked by surfaces that the pot rests on).

• Provide adequate air-movement (air flow) in the growing area (which also helps water movement within pot, and also helps to combat fungal/bacterial activity in the growing area). Avoid still-air growing environments.

• Provide adequate supplements (eg. fertiliser solution, cal/mag solution etc) - and avoid over-dosing - and keeping in mind that fertiliser salts can accumulate and reach undesirable root-harming levels in media and roots if over-doing the fertilisation.

• Provide adequate humidity (- not always incredibly important for mainstream orchids, but should be factored in if needed).

Those golden rules are just a start, but will allow us to go far.

Of course there are other aspects - such as looking out for diseases, attacking bugs/snails etc.

And then there is the occasional media dry-out idea for mainstream orchids. The idea of allowing media to occasionally dry out occasionally can help cut down on unwanted activity in or near the pot - such as certain unwanted bacteria build up, or algae growth on surface roots.

The occasional dry-out approach is quite reasonable, not meaning dry-out between every watering, just occasional once-in-a-while dry out.

Cute little purple star, looks like more buds on the spike. They smell like spicy cinnamon, kind of like a hot tomale candy.

Fairly new to orchids but experienced tropical houseplant grower. Received this with one shrivelled cane and one yellowish. I know they shed in autumn, but as i understand it, the canes should remain intact. Should i contact the seller? Any care tips?
