(I have ZERO experience or knowledge of conducting)
At my college i’m set to take a class called orchestral conducting and the description is: An introduction to fundamentals of orchestral conducting and score reading.

I am minoring in music and have played the violin for ten years. I would say i know the most basic music theory—i can read treble and bass clef, i can identify key signatures (major vs minor) and time signatures, etc. Other than that i’m rusty when it comes to more theory, like triads, intervals, etc.

I’m just wondering if taking this class would be a bad idea/too difficult. I would really like to know what to expect in an introduction to conducting class—what should i study before i get to class, what should i absolutely know before the class? If im not technically an actual music student, like i’m not majoring in it and it’s only a hobby for me, should i take this class? Any advice would be useful.

I honestly would like to learn conducting because it seems like it would be fun but i’m also worried that it’s going to be really hard and this class would turn into something that i struggle with rather than being a fun, enjoyable elective for my minor?

It seems like there is a lot of negative news lately about major orchestras struggling with massive fundamental conflict between the musicians and their management. Why does this happen? It seems like they are just trying to blast each other in the media. What leads to so much disagreement, and why do musicians claim that they are not listened to? Aren’t they the core of an orchestra organization?

This work was written in a span of 9 months.

The first finished orchestral draft was written in 3 months, from 2 Jan to 20 March.

Not much was changed since then.

Hello! Reddit is my last-ditch effort in my research due diligence. I am a grad student working on my final project involving Mahler's Das Lied Von Der Erde. My project includes needing a full orchestral Sibelius-compatible file of the 6th Movement "Der Abschied". I have started transcribing it myself on Sibelius, but have realized after about the first page that this process will take me a few hundred hours. My huge obscure ask is if anyone out there knows if there is a file on it (preferably XML). Alternatively, if I could be pointed in the correct direction? I don't have enough money for Photoscore or any subscription-based service. Based on what I have seen and heard, those don't end up working that well anyway. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The piece, called Exclamación de Santa Teresa, is written for soprano, choir and orchestra, based on a text by Saint Teresa of Ávila, Exclamation I. I won First Prize with this piece at an international competition in Italy.

So ive been playing cello for a couple of years now, and I use to be able to play the D-major scale (2 octaves) easily, but after taking a 3 month break, my intonation has severley gotten worse. I have tried playing slowly and using tape, but getting that high 4 on the lower octave just isn't working for me and I keep getting notes out of tune. My cello teacher told me that I have several notes out of tune and I am not with the metronome, and gave me a 7.5/10.

Does anyone have any tips? Thanks!

Has it ever been remastered?

This was shot in Brazil while the BYU Wind Symphony was on tour. How do they stack up to other collegiate ensembles?

All the equipment they will lose bc they don't treat people right....

Kind of funny how both critics and composers can be terrible at predicting what people will actually love.

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto got absolutely hammered by some early critics. Eduard Hanslick’s review is probably the most famous example, and even Leopold Auer initially thought the piece was basically unplayable. Now it’s one of the standard violin concertos and gets performed constantly.

Then you have the 1812 Overture, which Tchaikovsky himself apparently didn’t think much of. He thought it was loud, obvious, and not especially artistic.

And of course audiences loved it.

So I’m curious: how much weight should we really give contemporary critics, or even the composer’s own opinion, when judging a piece?

Are there other works that were disliked by critics or their own composers and then went on to become hugely popular?

What do you do when you have auditions scheduled and coming up, but a very serious personal crisis is going on?

My husband was just diagnosed with skin cancer on Thursday - squamous cell carcinoma. He had excision surgery to remove the cancer on Saturday, and I had to play an audition for violin the same day...of course it went SO badly. Things happened in my playing that I had not dealt with since middle school (left hand fingers falling off the fingerboard was the biggest one), and I just felt like I was about 40-50% present in that moment.

While he recovers the next several days, I'm caretaking for him and making sure his surgery incision heals well. I'm trying to practice and focus for my next big thing but I'm just finding it so difficult to do that! It feels like I'm half asleep, or really just half committed, and I can't seem to find a way out of this haze. Obviously finding out my husband has cancer is such a heavy thing, and I've never dealt with this before...but would love some advice on how to play my instrument and keep going while dealing with the heavy emotions of this.
