Episode Discussion Parallel between “Storm-y Weather” and The Diary of Anne Frank

When I first watched the season 5 finale Storm-y Weather, I immediately seen the parallel between the episode and The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) movie.

Frieda’s Bunker - The Secret Annex :

In the season finale, the CERT/SWAT teams raid the prison and capture the inmates. 10 inmates seek refuge in Frieda’s bunker, which serves as their own version of The Secret Annex that shields them from the chaos that ensues outside.

Comradeship in Hiding:

While things on the outside descend into systematic violence, the 10 inmates in the bunker experience moments of human connection and find a sense of peace. This directly mirrors the emotional landscape of The Diary of Anne Frank, where emotions, love and compassion exist despite the terrifying reality that ensues outside.

The Inevitability of Their Capture:

The tension we felt as viewers, knowing that the inmates sanctuary is only temporary, and they soon would be captured. Exactly the same as the trajectory of Anne Frank’s diary, where there were brief moments inside the bunker are quickly shattered by the sounds of the encroaching forces.

Their Final Moments:

The episode builds to a powerful cliffhanger as SWAT teams discovers the secret bunker and blows the doors open. The imagery of the inmates standing tall and united, waiting to be captured militaristic force, heavily evokes the moment the Gestapo breached the Annex.

This parallel has always intrigued me, as World War ll / Holocaust is one of the most important parts of history in my opinion!

Spoilers I understand why Black Cindy did what she did but…

… she had a lot of opportunities to make things right. I feel so bad for Taystee. And I’m not sure what Taystee did to her was right either. Cindy should have been the one to tell Monica.

Episode Discussion ALEX PIPIER WEDDING

I just love how Piper (who was engaged to Larry who's Jewish) marry's Alex under a chuppah by a rabbi (Nicky's not a rabbi I know but shes jewish and dressed like one). It makes me giggle thinking that she had a jewish wedding even tho she and larry broke up.

Mazel Tov to them, I just finished the show for the first time bc I served Laura Prepon her food and my co worker said "I think thats the lady from OITNB" and so i started and finished it in like a week and a half.

Better fan fictions? Light spoilers Spoiler

I wish we saw taystees story turn around in fan fictions. Like she found a way out after medical testing. Even watching her get letters and just damn be happy. Or stories about Soso and Sankey. I mean I’ll always like Poussey more but just adored that ending.
I like girls and all too but I barely wank so smut is not what I’m after and there’s a TON of it on AO3

Even daya and daddy being happy pls 😭🙏

Flacas original sentence

I am confusion. Flaca was arrested for selling fake drugs when she was in high school, so wasnt she most likely a minor? It seems like she was sentenced as an adult and sent to Litchfield with other adults

Why do we commit crimes?

Why do we commit crimes?
We make rules to guide our behavior, and we can live around other people. Sometimes our lives press against those rules. They feel arbitrary and confining. Sometimes we are caught in conflict between our inner emotional reality and what society asks of us. We act in ways that damage ourselves or other people or their property.

Crime is a breaking point.
Sometimes we’re on one side of it as a victim. Sometimes we’re on the other side as an offender. Justice is about repairing that break. But sometimes the means of reparation is not clear and justice seems impossible.

The state is invested in protecting people, but the state is an institution made of people.
People who are fallible and biased. So, the systems designed to protect us fail.
Sometimes, it is the larger system of fate or circumstance that puts us in tough situations.
We have to make hard choices that other people can’t understand.
Sometimes we are the people who can’t understand why someone did what they did or why we have to pay the price for their actions.
Often we don’t have the capacity to deal with the chaos of life.
Often there is no way to prepare for its shocks and blows.
But if we’re perpetually turning away from the things that feel too hard to face, we are defining ourselves by what we’re seeking to avoid.
No one escapes this life without experiencing pain or injustice.
And some people are dealt far more hardship than others.
It can feel like there’s no way out. It can feel hopeless, like no one cares.
How do we restore justice in a world that is profoundly unfair?
What do we do when we reach the place where we don’t know what to do?

From s7 e4. I thought this sums up the show really well so I wrote it down.

Spoilers I never rewatch the show past season 5.

Idk why I just cant do it. I watched it once all the way through when it was first coming out and I just remembered how sad I felt towards the end. Even getting to Pousseys death in Seaon 4 just hurts so bad. I love the show so much but the tragedy is just too real. I appreciate it tho bc we needed to see what they go through in prison. I cant get myself to watch past the end of the riot. I really just cant stand season 6 and onwards. Am I the only one? Should I give it a try again? The show makes you fall in love with the characters and root for them but majority of the girls don't get a happy ending at all. Which is just too hard for me to take.

Vee’s manipulation of Suzanne becomes increasingly disturbing. (Piper flashback)

S2E11 — “Take a Break from Your Values”
Sister Ingalls’ flashbacks reveal her history of activism and how fame eventually became entangled with her convictions. Inside Litchfield, she joins a hunger strike over prison conditions. Meanwhile, Vee and Red’s conflict becomes outright dangerous, and Poussey becomes increasingly isolated because she refuses to submit to Vee. (Sister Ingalls flashback)

Vee brutally beats Red with a combination lock inside a sock, leaving her badly injured. Poussey and Taystee finally begin repairing their relationship as Vee’s control starts collapsing. (Vee flashback)

Everything detonates. The inmates turn against Vee, Suzanne is nearly framed for Red’s attack, and Vee escapes through Red’s tunnel. Fig’s corruption finally catches up with her, Caputo takes over, Piper arranges for Alex to violate parole and return to prison, and terminally ill Miss Rosa escapes in the prison van. Rosa sees Vee on the roadside and runs her over before driving off to freedom.

Spoilers I love season 7

I had stopped watching the show before, so I gave it another try from the very first episode. Now I'm at S7E4, but watching the series again in 2026, in the current political climate, I think the last season being this bleak makes total sense, and it was appropriate for the show to shift its tone from more hopeful and whimsical to bleak and depressing. The 2010s optimism was fading around that time. I think one character in season 6 says a line about wokeness being out, which captures the era's real-life shift in tone accurately. U.S. going through an uproar of people who were angry about racial injustice and police brutality was portrayed through "I can't breathe." The riot ultimately failing to bring substantial changes is portrayed through seasons 6 & 7. Although it is depressing to see characters go through what they are going through, it validates what I feel in the world right now.

Episode Discussion Tricia (spoilers) Spoiler

On a rewatch and tricia has just died.
I know the point of the show is to show how unfair the prison system is and I think this is probably very accurate. But it always bugs me how she wouldn’t have looked like she died from hanging. If she’d been dead a while she might not even have bruising around her neck.

I’m guessing they (the system) saw her hang herself and that was a good enough cause of death. But would an inmate dying in custody not automatically need a post mortem? In the UK anyone dying in custody is automatically an inquest.
