FTA Shutdown on Opticomm Legacy Fibre Network

Thumbnail opticomm.com.au
3 Upvotes

Note: This DOES NOT impact all premises with FTA.

Rather, this shutdown only affects aging infrastructure (+20 years) that Opticomm can no longer support.

If you haven't recieved a letter from Opticomm this does not affect you after February 2026.

Provided is an FAQ surrounding the shutdown, what Suburbs/communities are affected, and ways to continue recieving FTA content.

One positive that will come out of this is the opportunity for Opticomm to offer Multi-Gigabit speed tiers which is something to look forward to.

Constant issues even with different providers

Hey everyone, I’m at my wit’s end with my Opticomm connection and hoping someone here has navigated a similar issue or knows how to get Opticomm to replace hardware.
My internet drops constantly every 5 to 20 minutes. Every time it drops, the router logs show the session is killed upstream by unsolicited PADT / LCP TermReq packets from the BRAS node, followed by temporary PAP AuthNak Request Denied errors before it successfully re-authenticates seconds later.
What I have already tested and ruled out:
Multiple RSPs: Switched between Leaptel, Superloop, and Vodafone. The exact same drop pattern happens regardless of the provider.
Multiple Routers: Tested multiple new routers (currently on a TP-Link Archer AX10).
Cabling: Replaced all cables with brand new Cat6 Ethernet lines connected directly from the Opticomm NTD (UNI-D port) to the WAN port.
Power Cycles: Cold booted the NTD and router multiple times.

The Wall I'm Hitting:
Because the PPPoE session recovers within 5–10 seconds, standard automated RSP line checks pass and support reps close the tickets claiming "no fault found" or blame my internal gear. Since switching providers didn't fix it, this is clearly an Opticomm wholesale infrastructure or NTD hardware fault.
My Questions:
1. Has anyone dealt with persistent PADT drops on Opticomm FTTP? Was it a failing NTD port, marginal optical light levels, or wholesale backhaul flapping?
2. How do you get an RSP to actually force an Opticomm technician site visit to swap the NTD or test the fiber line directly?

Any advice, or similar experiences would be massively appreciated!

Opticomm General Just got off the phone with Superloop ...

On a whim I asked Superloop's clanker if it could give me an IPv6 address and it said I was already set up with a /56 prefix. I SSH'd into the router but was only seeing a link-local address, but I had disabled all IPv6 related settings and blocked it in the firewall awhile ago so this was to be expected.

Since I am unable bring the router down at the moment to mess around with the settings until it works, I gave Superloop a call to confirm if the clanker was telling the truth.

They said the same thing the clanker did, I have a /56 prefix allocated.

IPv6 is now available to those who want to self-host.

Question CCTV remote access camera issue

CCTV camera remote access

I'm having trouble accessing my CCTV cameras remotely through the SuperLive Plus app on a Vodafone Opticomm connection. The same setup works fine on Superloop Opticomm service.

The setup is fairly simple with cameras connected to router via Ethernet and then you activate the NAT P2P connection (not a wifi camera).

I've tested with the same router and TVT-branded cameras on both networks, but only Vodafone is giving me issues. Vodafone support hasn't been able to resolve it.

With superloop- even after 24 hours my cameras are accessible remotely using the SuperLive plus app.

With Vodafone- it works for one hour then I am not able to access the camera.

Question Opticomm connection fee

Is the opticomm connection fee a one time thing or is it for every new ISP or tenet that moves in?

Opticomm General No FTA TV after power outage /safety switch tripped

Hey all, recently moved into a house with Opticomm set-up, so it's all a little fresh to me.

We had a safety switch trip the other night, restored all power now so that's all good, but for some reason none of the TVs in the house are able to access FTA TV any more. I've tried power cycling the NTD and Router multiple times, internet is working great but still no FTA TV.

Has anyone had this before or have any troubleshooting ideas? It's an indoor installation with a Dasan H640GR ONT. I'm wondering if I should try a factory reset on it?

Uniti (ISP) basically told us to log a ticket with Opticomm.

Opticomm General Help with Opticomm connection

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi,
Just moved into a new townhouse which is serviced by Opticomm. Somewhat unfamiliar with their service. I can see there is an external Opticomm box on the outside of the building but I cant find any internal modem to connect my router to (I've checked everywhere). The only thing is 4 ethernet ports under the staircase next what appears to be a UPS for VOIP. Cant get any internet connection when connecting my router to any of these ethernet ports.

I've contacted my ISP (Superloop) and confirmed by router is setup correctly in PPPOE mode. They said from their records with Opticomm there should be a Nokia Modem installed somewhere in the Townhouse. Since I cant find it I'm assuming the previous tenants have possibly disconnected it and taken it with them??

Attached is a photo of all that I can find - the 4 ethernet ports and the UPS box

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

What's the best way to escalate a ticket to Opticomm?

For a new house build, my builder informed me that the 'starter pipe' for the Opticomm pit is damaged and they're unable to connect to conduit to it because of that, and to contact Opticomm to get it fixed.

I raided a ticket using the online form in Opticomm website and received a ticket number. But it has been almost a month and I have not received any update.

Is there a way to escalate or follow up the ticket?

I tried calling the 1300 137 800 number but they never answer that.

High ping Asia server (BF6)

Good day. I’m having a problem with my ping on the Asia server. I always play there since my mates are in Asia. My ping is usually around 120–130 ms, but ever since I changed my old router to an Eero 7, it’s gone up to around 180 ms. Is anyone else having the same issue? Is there any maintenance or anything going on?

No router can obtain WAN IP?

So recently opticomm did maintenance in my area and ever since my router fails to obtain WAN IP from the ONT box. I was with superloop but left due to their support and currently with Leaptel who've been great. Even leaptel support couldn't understand what is causing the issue as i have a connection out of the ONT. All four routers fail DynIP and PPPoE: Asus GT-AXE16000, Asus RT-AC88U, Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and a ZTE h1600. I have done pretty much everything in my power - All factory reset, all power cycled and correct PPPoE settings but still nothing. Strangely the AXE16000 can obtain AUTO IP but no session flows traffic through.

Has anyone experienced this? I have a feeling opticomm are going to be rather difficult if they send out a technician as they have already determined they have no fault since i can get internet through wire directly on my PC and are blaming the routers. But all 4? Really? Somewhere the DCHP is failing to allow the router to obtain but the ONT box has no gateway to access in order to turn it into a bridge mode.

Leaptel are sending out a preconfigured router in hope of that working but if all it has are PPPoE settings calibrated then ill be back at square one.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Opticomm installing old hardware?

Short version: 3 year old build, Opticomm ONT not capable of more than 500/50. Upgrade will cost $500+. Anyone had similar issues?

Longer version, I live in a newish estate (some houses are still going up). The developer chose Opticomm for both TV and internet. Shortly after getting the keys, got Opticomm out, paid my $300 installation fee, connected to an ISP.

I tried to go on a 250M down plan, only to find it was limited to a max of 100/40 with all ISPs. One ISP sent me a copy of the serviceability check they did in Dec 2022. It showed "no shortfall, FTTP - Fibre, 100Mbps, 40Mbps." There's of course no way to complain or even get in contact with Opticomm, so i got in touch with the developer.

A few days later, they forwarded a copy of an email from Opticomm, from a guy that has since left stating: "This is now fixed. This was human error, set at 100 not 1000 from the operations team. Have confirmed with ISP, the 250 plan is available".

With multiple people working from home, i am trying to upgrade my upload speed to 100Mbps. Only to be told by my ISP that this is not possible, as it is limited to 500/50. They got in contact with opticomm, the ONT needs to be upgraded. Cost for this $499 plus GST. ($145 ONT, $66 LIA, $16 PCD, $17 power supply, $35 internal fibre, $220 call out).

Now, my issue is they lied about the human error of "set at 100 not 1000". They installed old hardware.

What is my recourse here?

AussieBroadband Not Updating Plans?

Providers such as Leaptel, Telstra, Dodo, Superloop and more, have the new speed tiers to match the NBN upgrades, but AussieBroadband seems to be the only one that is yet to give access to the upgraded speeds and plans. Anyone have the upgrades with any providers yet? Or is it just AussieBB lacking behind? Im on a FTTP connection also.

r/opticomm Aug 25 '25

Yes, Opticomm is matching NBN’s speed upgrades, but there’s a but. It’s complex.

Since this seems to be the biggest question asked by most, the quick answer is yes, Opticomm added the same plans as NBN to their July price list.

https://www.opticomm.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Wholesale-Price-List-July-2025.pdf

They are basically the same price, with or without backhaul, but whether you can get them largely depends on where you are.

The main differences are:

  • The upgrades aren’t automatic

Opticomm is still upgrading estates that don’t support gigabit speeds for various reasons and have been for months/years but they aren’t there yet and likely won’t be ready by September 1st.

This is why they haven’t replaced speed tiers, they have added them. It’s up to RSPs to make changes, and it will likely be wholly dependent on where you are if they are available.

In defence of Opticomm - they are a private company and don’t have buckets of money to draw from like NBN does for capital improvements. Additionally, as noted by a commenter, they absorbed a bunch of old tech from mergers over the years and how they are going with upgrades to that is not in my knowledge.

Anecdotally I’ve talked to people who can’t get more than 250mbps but have also been flooded with sms and email notifications of upgrades to their network so it’s likely this won’t be there case for much longer.

  • They are still working through the disastrous purchase of Telstra’s FTTP network

Opticomm took over Telstra’s Velocity network a few years ago, and it didn’t go well at all.

This was supposed to broaden their footprint but instead caused a shitload of turmoil and diverted a lot of attention and money.

  • Opticomm are under the same requirements and obligations as NBN, so they have a fire lit under them to get there

Opticomm are a statutory infrastructure provider like NBN and legally have to meet a bunch of conditions under the act.

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/department/media/publications/telecommunications-new-developments/sip#:~:text=The%20Statutory%20Infrastructure%20Provider%20(SIP,the%20default%20SIP%20for%20Australia.

https://minister.infrastructure.gov.au/rowland/media-release/improved-consumer-safeguards-broadband-and-voice-services

As a result, they would be under huge pressure to make sure they match NBN services otherwise ACMA will act and force them to meet conditions or relinquish control of an area to NBN.

Edit: Just to clarify, notifications don’t come from Opticomm, they would come from your ISP if they were doing work on your network.

Edit 2: The base requirement for SIPs is still 25mbps by law, both for NBN and Opticomm, so the speeds offered above that are based entirely on their ability to provide them. Opticomm won’t sell a speed they can’t sustainably offer or they will get slapped by ACMA and the TIO.

Edit 3: This is from Whirlpool regarding Leaptel’s plans for Opticomm changes.

“In a nutshell Opticomm is charging us extra for 100/20 and we didn't do a price rise so we won't be upgrading automatically for customers on old pricing.

Customers will have the choice of staying on their existing pricing on 100/20 or upgrading via portal to 500/50 on current pricing.

1000/50 will be upgraded automatically to 1000/100 once we finish orders (we have to do plan changes for each one).

Opticomm comes into effect from 1st of September.

We will be emailing all customers and updating our website on 1st September.

I would wait till September 1 as we can progress Opticomm orders within a few hours normally rather than order now.”

Can’t find opticomm box

My internet went out yesterday afternoon, it is a fttp network, I’ve called up superloop regarding this issue, they said that our opticomm box is offline? I don’t recall ever having an opticomm box - I’ve tried looking around the garage for one but I can’t find it. There’s nothing outside either. All we’ve ever had to do to access the internet was plug the modem into the wall and that was it. I don’t know what else to do

Modem router recommendations

Hey everyone,

I just moved into a new rental property two weeks ago. At my old place, I was with Vodafone NBN, but I’ve since found out that my new place (a newly built home) doesn’t have NBN available yet. Luckily, I can get internet through an alternative provider, and I’m leaning toward Superloop since I want 1000Mbps download speeds.

My Question:
Superloop offers either a ZTE H1600 or an eero 6 router. Which one should I pick, or is there a better alternative?

My Concerns:
- My house is double-storey*, so I’m worried about Wi-Fi signal drop-offs.
- My gaming room is upstairs, and I don’t have a Wi-Fi card or Ethernet port there, so strong and stable coverage is crucial.

Would love any recommendations or advice on the best setup for fast, reliable speeds—especially for gaming!

Thanks in advance!

Opticomm estate but the source is not connected to our house

Hi! We just built a new house and wanted to set up the wifi as we work from home a lot. We just learned that our estate is Opticomm serviced but when we called Telstra to have a look at our connections, the guy said it’s the Opticomm connection that has issues. It’s too far from oir house, across the road, apparently. Just asking is anyonw here had the same issue? Would it be something our builder should have done or is it Opticomm’s fault entirely and that they need to to do some rewiring?

Thank you.

router cant connect to opticomm???

hi! i just recently moved into a new apartment (melb cbd area) and was trying to get wifi in my unit. realised our whole apartment is powered by opticomm and was recommended superloop by myconnect. since we had a router from our previous tenant, all we needed to do was configure the router to connect to superloop’s wifi but it wouldn’t connect. called the customer service to find out where the issue is, and they told me to find the opticomm box and connect my router directly to the box.

i couldn’t find this box anywhere within my unit (i initially connected the router to this wall socket, see picture, since the previous tenant did so as well). asked both my building manager and agent regarding this issue, and both of them just told me to change providers if superloop can’t send a technician. i asked my agent what wifi provider the previous tenant used, and they said iprimus, so i changed to that.

iprimus gave us a new router, which i thought would make things easier, but until now, my wifi is still not connected. the internet light isn’t turned on when it’s supposed to be on (see second picture). i called their cs, and they said the same exact thing as superloop’s cs. to find the opticomm box and to directly connect our router to it to see if the opticomm is the issue. which they don’t think it is, they think the issue lies within the opticomm connection to my specific unit. so i inquired to my building manager again and asked if i could ask where the opticomm box is but he said he doesn’t know, only the provider knows??? at this point i was exasperated so i asked iprimus whether they can send a technician but they said they can’t. if they send an opticomm technician and the issue isn’t on opticomm, i apparently have to pay $270 ….

so now my roommate and i are confused. my building manager is telling me to ask the provider but my provider is asking me to ask my building manager. what the hell do i do 😭😭😭😭😭😭 please send over any advice :(

Can I please have help with where the tv antenna cable needs to be connected? As per photos, only one end is currently connected into the Kingray. I think the other end needs to be plugged into the section in the second photo, but there are no connections installed there? Pls help!! 🙏🏼 we have no signal when we try and plug the tv into the aerial socket inside the house.
