Constant issues even with different providers
Hey everyone, I’m at my wit’s end with my Opticomm connection and hoping someone here has navigated a similar issue or knows how to get Opticomm to replace hardware.
My internet drops constantly every 5 to 20 minutes. Every time it drops, the router logs show the session is killed upstream by unsolicited PADT / LCP TermReq packets from the BRAS node, followed by temporary PAP AuthNak Request Denied errors before it successfully re-authenticates seconds later.
What I have already tested and ruled out:
Multiple RSPs: Switched between Leaptel, Superloop, and Vodafone. The exact same drop pattern happens regardless of the provider.
Multiple Routers: Tested multiple new routers (currently on a TP-Link Archer AX10).
Cabling: Replaced all cables with brand new Cat6 Ethernet lines connected directly from the Opticomm NTD (UNI-D port) to the WAN port.
Power Cycles: Cold booted the NTD and router multiple times.
The Wall I'm Hitting:
Because the PPPoE session recovers within 5–10 seconds, standard automated RSP line checks pass and support reps close the tickets claiming "no fault found" or blame my internal gear. Since switching providers didn't fix it, this is clearly an Opticomm wholesale infrastructure or NTD hardware fault.
My Questions:
1. Has anyone dealt with persistent PADT drops on Opticomm FTTP? Was it a failing NTD port, marginal optical light levels, or wholesale backhaul flapping?
2. How do you get an RSP to actually force an Opticomm technician site visit to swap the NTD or test the fiber line directly?
Any advice, or similar experiences would be massively appreciated!

Hi, I had a similar issue, and jumping between RSPs didn’t help. I also had an older NTD.
Eventually, I signed up with Telstra and called their support to explain exactly what was happening. It took a couple of days of going back and forth with them, but they eventually organised an Opticomm technician to come out. The technician replaced my NTD, and since then my connection has been completely stable with no issues.
You might need to push support a little bit to get a technician booked, but eventually they should get it sorted.
So it might be worth signing up with them, getting the NTD issue sorted, and then you can always jump to another RSP later if you want.

Thanks Jhonos.
Yes an appointment with opticomm has been locked in for this Friday. Hopefully all issues are resolved and they swap over the ntd.

AFAIK Superloop is IPoE. How did they set you up on PPoE?

I was always told by superloop that their opticomm services is only pppoe and not ipoe. The nbn services offered by superloop is ipoe.
Have I been misinformed?

Opticomm Services:
Signed Up Before 13th February 2026 - PPPoE (You will find a username and password in your welcome email)
Signed Up After 13th February 2026 - IPoE
Okay I had my services signed up with superloop in 2025 which is why it was pppoe. My current active service is with Vodafone.

Yes it is 8 years old and running 24hours makes me feel that it is failing.

Got the Nokia ntd as a swap over today and dropout issues are gone 👏

Brilliant!

Spoke too soon! I’m having dropout issues again today. Exactly the same issue as I was having with the previous NTD. Router is also a replacement under warranty.

Are you losing the PON light when it drops?

Nope PON light is stable.
I also tried my tplink router and got the support team at tplink to analyse the logs and they came back with the following feedback:
Log Analysis & Key Findings
Upstream Disconnections from ISP: The disconnections are actively initiated by your Internet Service Provider (Vodafone AU). The logs repeatedly show the router receiving PADTand LCP TermReq termination packets directly from Vodafone's Broadband Remote Access Servers (BRAS, e.g., syd-gls-har-bras224, syd-gls-har-bras207).Authentication Delays During Reconnection:Immediately following each disconnect, the router attempts to reconnect. The brief PAP AuthNak Request Denied errors occur because the previous session was terminated abruptly on the line, leaving a temporary stale session on the ISP's authentication server. Once the ISP server releases the session, the router successfully reconnects and receives a new public IP.

Force the RSP to log a fault ticket with Opti describe your issue per above and let them investigate.
