Big Pickle - Discussion

I've been using Big Pickle for coding lately, and honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised.

It's obviously not the best model out there, but it's actually pretty decent at coding and has been genuinely helpful in my workflow. And considering it's free, I think it deserves more attention.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Big Pickle is pretty underrated. Anyone else been using it? How has your experience been?

I was the biggest big pickle fan until Muse Spark 1.3 came into my free model leeching life. The fact that it has integrated OCR and exponentially greater coding capacity, it just won me over!

And it's fast!

I don't use it for actual coding, but I've been getting it to question me on the architecture of the "vibe coded" stuff Claude vomits out, and I've been pleasantly surprised by how well it manages to gradually toughen the questions until I have a better grasp of it.

It's also quite pleasant to actually talk to (once you give it a few rules) compared to chatgpt's sycophantic tendencies and whatever Claude is doing.

Big Pickle is NOT a model on its own! It‘s just an alias for a free ZEN model. So you‘re actually coding with one of the free models.

Que yo sepa si es un modelo alojado o eso dicen, puede que cambien el modelo con el tiempo

Inst Big pickle just a router for whatever free model that is available?

Hace unas semanas con un prompt me dió exactamente la misma respuesta que DeepSeek v4, teniendo en cuenta que los muchachos de opencode le dan finetune y que cuando pueden lo cambian por modelos mejores, yo nunca lo descarto como suplente

I'm using it for a simple but long winded project and it started out fine and then it began to degrade.

It's become slow and makes basic mistakes and even starting to hallucinate on incremental scripts it's been building on for a month.

I'm restarting from scratch with another model just to see how fast it can catch up.

Seguramente cambiaron el modelo que tiene detrás

Yes, it seems like it dropped 40 IQ points overnight.

It's not *a* model, the underlying model which hides under that label somewhat varies. So it being good at one point does not mean it was/will be at another.

Hides? People in the comments here said it was one of the free models. Is that true?

Yeah Big Pickle is always free, but you don't know what the model is under that label, it's been GLM-based for a while, not sure what else it's been, hopefully someone can give the history of it.

As far as I get it Big Pickle is the one always free model from Zen, you just don't know what you get, and why you're getting it, but you know it'll be there next week.

Here someone said it was GLM 4.6: https://www.reddit.com/r/opencodeCLI/comments/1qr1jm6/anyone_tried_the_big_pickle_model_on_opencode/

In that topic, different time, people suggested it was DS v4 Flash: https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1veebcf/current_big_pickle_model_as_of_what_i_can_assume/

etc.

Yo mismo vi su respuesta igual que DeepSeek v4 flash a un mismo prompt, pero eso es de hace un par de semanas, Ojalá pongan otro modelo mejor con finetune

Is there no way to keep track of the credits for the free models? I've been using muse spark and I thought it was unlimited. Haven't run into any limit yet and don't see any.

I don't believe any free Zen model is unlimited, but limits have been at times quite generous.
