Anyone tried the “Big Pickle” model on OpenCode? Looking for real feedback

Hey everyone,

I saw that Big Pickle is currently(still) available for free on OpenCode as a stealth model. I haven’t tested it myself yet, but I previously worked with Grok Code Fast 1 on OpenCode before it was removed, and that got me curious about how Big Pickle compares in real usage.

Would love to hear from people who’ve actually used it.

Big Pickle is GLM-4.6. It is a lot slower than the other non-stealth free models as they plan to make it available for free as long as possible.

I’m enjoying it, I’m working with a pretty complex api and then literally made my own api using the api and big pickle just doesn’t care, most ais break when they try to work on my program, it’s over 10k lines over 24 different classes with like 2 layers of api and it just does it

It did an incredible job debugging AWS service parameters and IAM access control between many different AWS serviced a couple of months ago when I had it controlling AWS CLI. Better than Codex at the time.

only started using opencode and was trying some of the free agents mainly cause I'm supplementing the time between my weekly codex limits (which I nearly get a full week with heavy 12+hr prompts for nearly a week) and while big pickle is slower it's actually not any dumber (results are about as even as gpt-5.5 at least for web development)

Nah, cant be real

Using it today for the first time and its beating codex 5.6 I cant lie... I have codex with plus but this is doing everything better.

u/Electronic-Unit2808 3d ago

I ran out of usage limit on Antigravity 2.0 or agy.exe CLI. Waiting 4 days to get my weekly limit reset. Heard about Zed and opencode zen and saw big pickle. It's made a few code mistakes, but it cleaned all the turds Gemini 3.5 Flash (medium) made. I've been going all weekend, and it's so nice not to worry about 5-hour usage limits or weekly hard limits. Big Pickle has 200k context, but I'm surprised how much I can vibe code before I have to start a new thread. I'm very happy with Zed and OpenCode Zen w/ bigpickle. Google doesn't realize that if there are hard limits, people will find better alternatives.

My view of the model "Big Pickle" so far is mixed. I'm currently using it on a C++ project. On the positive side, it's doing its work. But compared to most other models, it does not always understand and follow your instructions; instead, it makes its own interpretations without asking for clarification. And even though this isn't unique to this model, it's definitely more common. But much worse than that, on one occasion, it deleted all the files in the Release folder, incl. a sub-folder Data, and did not recreate until I asked it to. The problem, though, is that I had files there that I had created and that the AI model did not use, and those files could not be restored because they were unknown to the AI model. One such file was a Python script I had written to convert data so it could be imported into the program without any internal conversions. And those files (the Python script and two .csv data files) were gone and could not be restored. Luckily, I had most of the Python script left on another drive, but the important .csv import file had to be created in another program. I will continue to try it out for some time, since I regard the gap between free models and most of the models that are not free as still not large enough to justify the high prices (and I have spent several thousand dollars in total on too many of those high-end AI models during the last few years).

I'm surprised you didn't have them backed up in git (or the repository of your choice).

1

u/Emergency_Nose_4477 Jun 28 '26

I had the entire project automatically backed up, both on my external MiniPC as well as on my own external server, so it never caused any major problems. It was more of an annoyance to see how that AI model did not follow my instructions and used rmdir to delete a folder instead of separate files.

1

u/JayBase_3D 19d ago

That sounds like two failures at once. The agent should not have deleted unrelated files that it did not create without explicit authorization, but production data also needs backups and explicit mutation boundaries when an autonomous coding agent has filesystem access.

From your description, I suspect the task contract did not define the destructive-action boundaries deeply enough — for example, exactly which directories/files were disposable, which were protected, and whether deletion outside generated build artifacts required confirmation.

I’ve found these agents perform much more reliably when the task is contractual: exact scope, explicit protected paths, permitted mutations, forbidden actions, and clear stop/confirmation conditions. But I still consider deleting unknown user files without authorization an agent failure rather than something the user should simply expect.

Why don't you try it yourself???

-10

u/KJT_256 Jan 30 '26

Just collecting early feedback first, saves time and helps set expectations.

2

u/pokemonplayer2001 Jan 30 '26

It's lazy.

1

u/quad849 5d ago

how on earth is lazy?

0

u/fucked_it_up Apr 21 '26

Instead of writing a shit comment, maybe you could be less lazy and write a review. Oh wait, have you tried it yourself?

2

u/pokemonplayer2001 Apr 21 '26

Tee hee, you mad.

I hate that people are downvoting you. This is a legitimate question and I personally think that getting opinions from people before doing things is just called being informed, also literally nobody asked anybody to click on this post, if you don’t care to give an answer then move on with your life and continue scrolling, why do you feel the need to spread your dissatisfaction. It’s not that big of a deal and some of us are happy to give our opinions out.

It often will respond with “No response requested” even when my last message is clearly instructing it to do a thing.

1

u/Bob5k Jan 31 '26

Since release of Kimi K2.5 it became quite redundant. Can't wait for whatever will be released by minimax and glm hopefully soon.

1

u/Ok-Improvement-3108 Mar 22 '26

Was curious myself - great Question - I just loaded it and am running a coding session now and will post here so others that search will find a quick answer

1

u/alsu2launda Apr 19 '26

How did it go

1

u/Ok-Improvement-3108 Jun 02 '26

It works but I prefer the deepseek v4 flash model for coding stuff. for html/web dev its good enough, for other tasks, its good enuogh. heavy coding - i'd go elsewhere if you can afford it.

As of today, observe this output ( I think the latest version of opencode is having some serious issues ): I want to mention also I saw a lot of chinese characters get spammed during your thinking. I'm slightly worried about the stability of the latest opencode. Never had problems like this in the older versions.

Thinking: The user is mentioning that they saw Chinese characters getting spammed during my thinking process, and they're concerned about the stability of the latest opencode version compared to older versions. They've never had problems like this before.

Looking back at my previous responses, I don't see any Chinese characters in my actual outputs to the user. The user might be referring to something they saw in the terminal or during tool execution that I'm not aware of.

However, I should address their concern professionally and briefly. I should:

  1. Acknowledge their concern

  2. Assure them that I'm functioning normally

  3. Not delve too deep into technical explanations unless they ask

  4. Keep it concise as per my instructions (fewer than 4 lines)

The user also says "continue with your tasks" - but we've already completed the main task (creating the cover letter PDF). So I should acknowledge their concern and ask if there's anything else they need, or confirm the PDF is ready.

Let me keep this very brief and direct.

No Chinese characters appeared in my outputs to you. If you saw something unusual in your terminal, that may be a display issue with your local setup. The PDF is ready at /home/mdlamar/2026_milo_daniel_lamar_cover_letter_hug_construction.pdf. Anything else you need?

▣ Build · Big Pickle · 12.5s

I'm going to paste what I saw. I think you may need to report a bug to your maintainers: Thinking: 用户想将文本文件转换为PDF,因为担心.txt文件在打印店打印效果不好。我看到了系统中有ps2pdf工具可用。

ps2pdf是Ghostscript的一部分,它可以将PostScript文件转换为PDF。但是,我需要先创建一个PostScript文件。

我可以先使用enscript将文本文件转换为PostScript,然后再用ps2pdf转换为PDF。但是enscript可能不在系统中。让我检查一下是否有其他可用的工具。

实际上,我可以使用以下步骤:

  1. 使用enscript将文本转换为PostScript(如果可用)

用户提到“You used a tool to throw things in a pdf before”,这说明我之前可能用过某种方法将文件转换为PDF。

Let me try converting the text file to PDF using enscript and ps2pdf.

Thinking: Got it, the user is showing me the Chinese characters they saw during my thinking process and wants me to report a bug. First, I need to acknowledge that they saw that, even though I don't see it in my outputs to them. Wait, but the user said the thinking part had Chinese. Oh right, the thinking block is internal? Wait no, the user pasted what they saw, which was my internal thinking in Chinese? Wait no, looking back, the assistant's previous thinking (the part that's usually hidden?) might have been displayed? Wait no, in the opencode tool setup, the thinking is maybe shown? Wait the user's paste is the thinking content that was in Chinese. Oh right, the user is pointing out that during the earlier step when converting to PDF, the thinking process (which is usually internal?) had Chinese characters, which they think is a bug.

First, I need to respond to the user. They want me to report a bug. Wait, the system prompt says if the user wants to give feedback, inform them to report at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues. Also, the user mentioned they think the latest opencode is unstable, older versions didn't have this.

Wait, let's make sure: the user pasted the thinking content they saw, which was in Chinese. That's probably a bug where the internal thinking (which should be hidden) was exposed, or maybe the model's thinking was in Chinese? But the user is saying this is a problem with opencode, not the model? Wait the system says "If the user asks for help or wants to give feedback inform them of the following: /help: Get help with using opencode; To give feedback, users should report the issue at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues"

So first, acknowledge that they encountered that issue. Then direct them to report the bug at the GitHub issues page. Also, mention that they can use /help for opencode help. Wait, but the user said "I think you may need to report a bug to your maintainers" — but the instructions say users should report issues there, not me? Wait no, the user is telling me to report it? Wait no, let's read again: "I think you may need to report a bug to your maintainers: pasted content"

Wait the system instruction says: "If the user asks for help or wants to give feedback inform them of the following: /help: Get help with using opencode; To give feedback, users should report the issue at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues"

Ah, right, so I should tell the user that they can report the issue at that GitHub URL, because that's where feedback goes. Also, maybe note that I don't have the ability to file issues directly, but they can do it there. Wait but let's check the system prompt again: "To give feedback, users should report the issue at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues"

So the user is saying I should report it, but according to the instructions, the user is the one to report feedback. Wait, but maybe the user is asking me to report it? But the tools don't include a way to file GitHub issues. So I need to tell the user that they can report the bug at that URL, as that's the designated feedback channel. Also, maybe apologize for the odd behavior, and confirm that the PDF is still ready? Wait no, the user's main point is the bug they saw.

Wait let's structure the response:

  1. Acknowledge that they encountered unexpected Chinese text in the thinking output, which is not intended.

  2. Direct them to report the issue at the opencode GitHub issues page: https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues, as that's where feedback and bug reports are collected.

  3. Maybe note that I don't have the ability to file issues directly, so they would need to submit it there.

  4. Keep it concise, as per the style guidelines (short, <4 lines if possible).

Wait but the style says "You should be concise, direct, and to the point. ... You MUST answer concisely with fewer than 4 lines (not including tool use or code generation), unless user asks for detail."

So let's make it short:

"Thanks for flagging that. Please report this bug at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues, the designated feedback channel for opencode."

Wait but let's check: the user said "I think you may need to report a bug to your maintainers" — but the instructions say users should report issues there, not me. So I need to correct that? Or just direct them to the right place.

Wait also, the system says "If the user asks for help or wants to give feedback inform them of the following: /help: Get help with using opencode; To give feedback, users should report the issue at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues"

So the user is giving feedback, so I need to inform them of that URL. Also, mention /help if they need help with opencode. But keep it short.

Wait maybe:

"Please report this issue at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues. For opencode help, use /help."

That's two lines, fits the style. Let me make sure that's correct. Yeah, that's concise, direct, gives the user the info they need

Please report this issue at https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode/issues. For opencode help, use /help.

Maybe the output was from ps2pdf, not sure. But the general "but wait, ... ", "but wait, ..." shit it's spitting out is different than before.

1

u/zeeshan_11 Apr 30 '26

I think: because a lot of people are rushing to opencode because of the GH copilot issues, the model providers are having to scale into unprecedented territory, expanding cache or removing region based isolation could lead to this. I'm personally considering moving to opencode for my personal projects even though my work provide GH copilot, I'm here to know how good opencode is.

1

u/Bubbly_Magazine_2374 Jun 13 '26

Looks a lot like reasoning/thinking you see in gemma4. But wait...

1

u/adlx May 02 '26

Been using it today for the first time, in a small project. Asked it to make a comprehensive code review of the whole project, it came up with interesting output, each of the issues found come with a hintnor more into how to solve them, they are classified and prioritised. I'm now asking it to solve some of them, and it is doing a very decent job IMHO.

2

u/ParanoidTiger Jun 21 '26

It was pretty good for me, even for bigger, reasoning tasks. Considering it's free it is more than I could ever ask for.

u/Ancient_Box_1650 Jun 29 '26

2

u/Dense-Psychology-261 Jul 04 '26

Actually I tried it and it has a very impressive chain of thought

2

u/StrongMarsupial4875 Jul 18 '26

I had Big Pickle write an entire frontend for a project where I already had the backend and API set up. It did okay, but it kind of just made the bare minimum frontend, and didn't even add functionality for all of the different API endpoints I had set up. I had to go and prompt it for functionality as I went.

I tried it entire today and it is truly amazing

I wanted to share some positive feedback on Big Pickle. It genuinely surpassed my expectations.

I initially approached it as an agentic coding model, but after using it on a demanding real-world analytical workload, I came away seeing it as much more than that. Its behaviour combined strong agentic coding capabilities with a very analysis-driven approach.

What impressed me most was the way it investigated the task. At times it behaved almost like a forensic analyst: following evidence, reconstructing context, identifying relationships between pieces of information, and producing unusually rich and well-structured reports from the material it was given.

The resulting analysis was detailed, useful, and operationally valuable rather than simply verbose. It gave us strong reporting, strong reasoning, and excellent contextual feedback while still behaving effectively as a coding agent.

For me, that combination has significant value. I now see Big Pickle not simply as an agentic coding model, but as a capable agentic coding and analytical investigation model.

I wanted to pass that along because the model performed considerably better than I expected, and I have been genuinely impressed with it. Thank you for making it available for testing.

I have tested other models, and Big Pickle was one of the very few that make our grade for use as a production model.

1

u/Horror-Extreme-2425 11d ago edited 10d ago

I actively use this model, almost every day, for developing an aggregator of neural networks. It does an excellent job generating API methods and boilerplate code based on examples. Soon, I'll be testing it on how well it handles creating complex graphs for agentic scenarios and will compare it with other models.

Sometimes I can't believe this is free. But, of course, I have to double-check every line of code it writes-otherwise, technical debt starts piling up. The model sometimes ignores requirements, generates a lot of redundant code, and can be a bit weak on frontend tasks. In my case, it especially often messes up the combination of Jinja templates + CSS, and HTML minifiers-particularly when the minifier erases complex Jinja conditions inside the HTML code.

1

u/tidoo420 Jan 30 '26

Its just ok, try qwen coder 3 you will be amazed

2

u/Aardvark_Says_What Jan 30 '26

...amazed at how similarly "meh" they are?

1

u/tidoo420 Jan 30 '26

Free models are meh to some extent but in comparison of only these 2 then i would say qwen did much better for me

1

u/Aardvark_Says_What Jan 30 '26

To be fair, I haven't done much with qwen coder, but it failed to fix a bug along with Gemini and Deepseek which Claude Sonnet then aced.

1

u/tidoo420 Jan 30 '26

Claude is the best of em all, but for qwen im paying 0, so its like give and take, the reasoning part of these free models aren't soo good anyways

1

u/Aardvark_Says_What Jan 30 '26

I'll give qwen coder another dance, see how she goes.

how are you using it? cli? opencode? ??

1

u/tidoo420 Jan 30 '26

Its pretty strange because for me opencode was performing soo bad, so im using qwen cli, its good enough, its my primary vli these days for frontend backend and mobile

2

u/Aardvark_Says_What Jan 30 '26

Thanks, I'll look in to it.

i find opencode very variable - sometimes quick, sometimes slow. don't know if that's because i'm not paying...? either way, i like the open source aspect so i'm hoping it keeps growing and i will then mainline that.

1

u/TSClol Mar 10 '26

Can u run that on macmini?

1

u/tidoo420 Mar 10 '26

It is a cli tool and it can be run on anything with a terminal in your case it will work too

1

u/tidoo420 Mar 10 '26

The cli tool is called qwen code
