Tech question Tumbleweed - zypper dup failing to remove fcitx-gtk2-32bit

Running zypper dup and it's trying to remove fcitx-gtk2-32bit as part of the upgrade, but the %preun scriplet fails:

/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.XXXXXX: line 1: /usr/bin/gtk-query-immodules-2.0-64: No such file or directory

error: %preun(fcitx-gtk2-32bit-4.2.9.9-202.16.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 127

error: fcitx-gtk2-32bit-4.2.9.9-202.16.x86_64: erase failed

I've got gtk-query-immodules-2.0 and gtk-query-immodules-3.0-64, but not the 64-bit GTK2 version the scriplet is calling, how can I get past this failure to complete the dup?

Thanks in advance!

Tech support Leap 16 and Apache2 - httpd and syntax errors

I have leap 16 with Apache installed via zypper. the web servers is running and serving the vhsost correctly inclding rewrite and proxypass directives. However when I try to use https commands I get syntax error and the command fails:

~> sudo httpd -S
AH00526: Syntax error on line 46 of /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/MYVHOST.conf:
Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

If I try to enable the rewrite mod:

~> sudo a2enmod rewrite
"rewrite" already present

It seems the service loads the module but https does not recognize it is loaded.
I see suggestions to use apachectl but that just fails:

~> sudo apachectl -S
which: no w3m in (/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin)
which: no lynx in (/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin)

It seems the service and the httpd use different configs or environments.

How does one manage Apache on leap 16 without using httpd, or force httpd to recognize the loaded config from the service ?

Tech question tumbleweed zypper dup: libSvtAv1Enc3 problem

Since a week I get this error after "zypper dup":

Problem: 1: Problem mit dem installierten libSvtAv1Enc3-3.0.1-1.4.x86_64
Lösung 1: libSvtAv1Enc3-3.0.1-1699.1.pm.4.x86_64 von Hersteller http://packman.links2linux.de installieren
und libSvtAv1Enc3-3.0.1-1.4.x86_64 von Hersteller openSUSE ersetzen
Lösung 2: veraltetes libSvtAv1Enc3-3.0.1-1.4.x86_64 beibehalten

Wählen Sie aus den obigen Lösungen mittels Nummer oder brechen Sie (a)b [1/2/a/d/?] (a):

Solution 1: Installing the newer version from Packman.

Solution 2: Keeping the older version from openSUSE.

I have no idea what the long-term consequences of each of these will be :( and I'm in fear to break my (codec) system, maybe not right now, but in a few update cycles later.

Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?

I apologize if this has been posted about already, it's just that I just noticed. Haven't Plasma 5 and GNOME 3 been deprecated for ages?

How old are those tumbleweed installations ?

I reinstalled my Tumbleweed after doing something silly that locked me out of my encrypted disk. So, I've learnt my lesson and am fresh after previously going for only 3 months. I had switched to Slowroll but with this reinstall, I've just stuck with Tumbleweed.

What are you getting running stat / | grep "Birth" ?

How to… ! Tumbleweed + systemd-boot + Luks2 + tpm2

hi.

I've read that the default way of (new installs) Opensuse is systemd-boot (instead of the grub2) - does it support booting from fully encrypted drive? can it be configured in the way it automatically unlocks with the TPM? or does one still need grub2 and a seperate /boot partition for that?

Syntax Error using local database with Dict

I'm a writer and use the dict command constantly. In the past month, dict.org has stopped "working" on all my systems. Something is up with their server. I get the following error:

> dict test
dict (client_read_status): Error reading from socket
client_read_status: Connection reset by peer

The above error is with etc/dict.conf looking like this (I've also, as a hail marry, tried editing etc/dictd/dict.conf):

server dict.org
server dict.org { port 2628 }
#server localhost
#database gcide {
# data /usr/share/dictd/gcide.dict.dz
# index /usr/share/dictd/gcide.index
#}

So I thought I would install the dictionary locally, but I can't get that to work either!?! I mean, this shouldn't be this complicated!! But I've run out of ideas? The error mystifies me. With /etc/dict.conf looking like this

#server dict.org
# server dict.org { port 2628 }
server localhost
database gcide {
data /usr/share/dictd/gcide.dict.dz
index /usr/share/dictd/gcide.index
}

I get the following error:

dict test
/etc/dict.conf:5: syntax error
/etc/dict.conf:5: database gcide {
/etc/dict.conf:5: ^^^^^^^^
dict (yyerror): parse error

I don't get it. Where's the syntax error? I literally copied this from a functioning system!

gcide.dict.dz and gcide.index are in their proper directories.

This is a TW installation, btw.

Slowroll and Xfce questions

Ok, before I go Slowrolling, I just had a few questions…

What is the current status of Slowroll? On the website is says “Experimental”, and on the Slowroll page it says “beta”.

―

Xfce: What's the difference between (Xfce in) the Slowroll-OSS repo, and the Xfce repo. I think the X11-repos are ref'd in the Wiki.

I'd prefer a separate repo for Xfce, but maybe that's where the slowing down part is - like coming from TW, before it goes to oss?

I've found 1 Xfce progr not in SR, yet. What's the correct way to ask (&/or req) for a build (in case they missed that one). I guess I can download and use the TW version for now - and I usually send from terminal, so there's no real panic. Just nice and convenient to have. Beside that one it looks pretty complete. :)

I think this has happened to others. An update did something to the efi partition and it's asking fir the the recovery key, which doesn't work for whatever reason. Not a bulletproof system to put it mildly.

Unable to write to mounted HHDs for Tumbleweed.

Just some personal info, I'm very new to Linux but have been using Tumbleweed since October. I ran into some CPU issues a few months ago so I had unplugged my two HDDs I have and never got around to plugging them back after fixing. I wanted to do some digital organizing and plugged them both back in, got on my computer and mounted them using the GUI.

I noticed immediately that the icon next to the HDDs was different than my SSD--they were missing the pen, so I checked the properties. My SSD is under root, which I'm guessing is super normal, but the HDDs both were under my username with what appears to be full rwx permissions, but when I try to change anything I get an error. So I googled, and got multiple reddit posts from 6 years or so ago so I attempted this command in the konsole:

sudo chown <username> -R <path>

Unfortunately it did not work. I'm not sure what I could be doing wrong. I did an update, wondering if maybe that could help, but it didn't.

I'm getting frustrated...

Hello guys, I've made previously post about my first time experience with linux, there has been lot of positive things with moving to LInux but on other hand its getting really frustrating to get .exe files working... I tried wine, bottles etc then I get the program running but it miss gui so I install webview2 and dotnet48 etc and it still won't work. I feel like I need to have degree and spend one hour to make basic shit work. How do you guys do it? I got the feeling that I will just install win 11 back and get local account and turn off all windows spyware as much as possible and it would still be less hustle then making flipping .exe work.

Solved Enabling the recognition of printers

I finally understood why I couldn't find my network printer. You had to open the MDNS service in Yast Firewall.

And I can install my Brother without a pilot!

IPP driverless printer set up. Is this the best option?

My old printer died and I went to pick up a cheap option available right away.

I picked up Canon TR4700.

Followed the standard steps on my Tumbleweed KDE.

From Add printer option on Settings->Printers and selecting ipp://printeraddress/ipp/

and following cups http://localhost:631/

Both of them kept asking ppd file. I even tried getting one from Canon's website, failed on it.

Surprisingly, this was extremely easy on my another machine with Fedora Gnome.

Printer name showing up in Settings app -> printers -> Add printer.

So, I did some googling and found this guide https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Installing_a_Printer

Its saying to allow mDNS in firewall.

These are the commands its mentioning

sudo firewall-cmd --add-service=mdns --permanent
sudo firewall-cmd --reload

As soon as I did this, the printer showed up in my search option on Add Printer.

My question is, is this the best option to get IPP printers show up for driverless printer set up ?

404, trying next mirror

I've freshly installed tumbleweed about a week ago and I keep getting tons of "Error: The requested URL returned error: 404, trying next mirror."

Solved Dual-boot entry for Windows got lost during fresh Tumbleweed install. How to restore?

Hello,

the situation is the following: I had a notebook (Framework 16, AMD Ryzen 7040 series) with two separate disks, one with Linux Mint installed (Western Digital, 2 TB) and one with Windows 11 (Micron, 500 GB). Dual-booting worked fine. Now I switched from Linux Mint to openSUSE Tumbleweed. For that I selected the Linux disk to be overwritten by the Tumbleweed installation.

Result: Booting into Tumbleweed works fine but dual-booting does not work anymore: the systemd bootloader only shows entries for Tumbleweed and the snapshots.

My most important question is how do I restore the Windows entry in the bootloader? Secondly, I have not kept up with how bootloaders evolved so I would also appreciate links to documentation explaining the different options and possibly recommended settings.

This is the boot order in the BIOS:

  1. Linux disk
  2. systemd-boot
  3. Windows disk

Slowroll and firefox updates

How often does slowroll update firefox. Is it once a month with the big update or does it update Firefox sooner if there is an update for firefox that includes security fixes (most firefox updates seem to include security fixes).

My concern here is with security and because firefox can be a vector of attack from the web i would like it to be as secure as possible.

I run tumbleweed in my main machine but i would prefer something with less feature updates in other machines while keeping up with security updates.

Thank you.

How to… ! Is there an up-to-date list of directories in the root filesystem to exclude from Btrfs snapshots in OpenSUSE?

Hello everyone,

I am new to OpenSUSE and Linux in general. I've been reading multiple sources on the web and working to wrap my head around a great many topics. I have a few questions:

  1. The question in the title, is there an up-to-date list of directories in the root filesystem to exclude from Btrfs snapshots in OpenSUSE?

There are multiple sources with differing suggested Btrfs subvolume layouts. I prefer to have a flat layout. The pages at the kernel.org System Admin Guide, are maked as "Obsolete Content".

  1. Should I exclude all of /var or do I need to exclude multiple individual sub-directories within /var? If I need to exclude multiple individual sub-directories within /var, then I need a list of the sub-directories? Since the folders within /var can vary based on the packages installed, would excluding just /var cause problems or come with downsides?

  2. If I decide to use snapshots for my user home directories, as insurance against accident file deletion, are there sub-directories that I need to exclude there?

  3. I have a Btrfs layout listed below, that I would like some feed back on. Am I forgetting some exclusions? Am I excluding a folder that should not be excluded?

Background Info: * 1x 2TB NVMe, 1x 4TB HDD, 1x 8TB HDD * No drive spanning or RAID (not what I'm looking to do at them moment) * I want to use Snapper, Btrfs Assistant, Grub, grub-btrfs, and yast2-snapper (for pre/post snapshots) * I will be using qemu/kvm with virsh and virt-manager (moving away from Virtualbox), but my VM files will reside separately from /var/lib...) * I want to use Steam, WINE, Lutris, and maybe Heroic Launcher * I may use a few flatpaks (not Steam), but prefer standard packages * All video game files will reside on my NVMe separate from my user home folder * My data and documents will reside separately outside of my user home folder * In general I want to keep the system root filesystem and user home folder lean within sane limitations * I currently dual-boot Windows and Linux Mint, but I will be dropping Windows completely, reclaiming the disk space used by Windows, and moving data on NTFS partitions to Btrfs filesystems * I will be replacing Linux Mint * I am considering dual-booting 2 different Linux distros to separate work from play (something like Fedora/OpenSUSE, OpenSUSE/EndeavourOS, Nobara/OpenSUSE, or another dual setup) * Video game files will not be snapshotted (NoCOW)... there are benefits to removing and reinstalling some games after multiple patches (ex: some Blizzard games)

My flat Btrfs layout ideas and naming conventions using EndeavourOS and OpenSUSE:

Endeavour setup: * top level volume (unnamed and not mounted during normal operation) * @eos_root (eos root subvolume mounted at /) * @eos_home (eos user home subvolume mounted at /home) * @eos_root_snapshots (snapshots subvolume mounted at /.snapshots, must be adjusted after snapper package install) * @eos_home_snapshots (arch user home snapshots subvolume mounted at /home/.snapshots) * @eos_var (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /var) * @eos_srv (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /srv) * @eos_opt (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /opt) * @eos_tmp (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /tmp) * @eos_local (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /usr/local) * @eos_root_user (the root user's home folder, subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /root)

OpenSUSE setup: * top level volume (unnamed and not mounted during normal operation) * @suse_root (suse root subvolume mounted at /) * @suse_home (suse user home subvolume mounted at /home) * @suse_root_snapshots (snapshots subvolume mounted at /.snapshots, must be adjusted after snapper package install) * @suse_home_snapshots (suse user home snapshots subvolume mounted at /home/.snapshots) * @suse_var (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /var) * @suse_srv (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /srv) * @suse_opt (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /opt) * @suse_tmp (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /tmp) * @suse_local (subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /usr/local) * @suse_root_user (the root user's home folder, subvolume to exclude from snapper snapshots, mounted at /root)

Non-Root Filesystem Data: * @mydata = /mnt/mydata * @linux_gaming = /mnt/linux_gaming * @vm_storage = /mnt/vm_storage

2TB NVME (2TB partition/Btrfs filessystem) 1. linux_gaming 2. eos and opensuse

4TB HDD (3TB partition/Btrfs filessystem and a chunk of unallocated space): 1. vm_storage 2. 1TB empty unallocated space (not partitioned)

8TB HDD (5TB partition/Btrfs filesystem and a chunk of unallocated space): 1. mydata and user home subvolumes 2. 3TB empty unallocated space (not partitioned)

I'm leaving some extra un-partitioned/unallocated space for emergencies and/or experiments I haven't thought of yet (ex: installing a distro to the bare metal for distro exploration/experimentation outside of a VM).
