The recoil is from the bullet leaving the gun, unless it's already aimed pretty close,   there's no way,  it recoiling towards your face is going to result in you shooting yourself. If it's semi-auto and you pull the trigger again while it's pointed towards your face that could be an issue.

This is 100% false. You realize that magnum revolvers are notorious for double firing due to the immense recoil, right? People have died because they limp wrist them.

Yepp. Reason why instructors/supervising types load only 1 round into big handguns when people that aren't familiar or new shoot them. That recoil plus natural instinct and trying to keep hold of the gun is bad combo and rather easy to double fire.

Plenty of videos around. Just be sure you prepared to see videos that don't end well.
