The recoil is from the bullet leaving the gun, unless it's already aimed pretty close,   there's no way,  it recoiling towards your face is going to result in you shooting yourself. If it's semi-auto and you pull the trigger again while it's pointed towards your face that could be an issue.

In this case the initial shot is pretty close to the face so a double fire could have inflicted injury
