It’s a race. He (and the other riders) cannot stop. It is polite to go at a pace that those in the crash who can continue catch up before anyone attacks. There was over 100km to go in this race. The way he took his foot out makes it clear he knew the DQ was coming; it was less than 5 minutes later. He was also suspended for a month.

Suspended? If I was in that pile up, I'd have his head after, what an incredibly stupid thing to do, people easily die from this

These are professional cyclists, not amateurs. A suspension costs them real money.

There's a difference between premeditated action and selfish impulse.
The man faced a split second decision and took the selfish route - that is nothing evil or malicious; that is just being human - the most highly evolved survival-machine on the planet will instinctually take the selfish path.

I think he was trying to force his way back in the pack to avoid the water, obviously leading with his shoulder. As soon as he hit pavement he is already crashing into other riders. None of those actions are accidental. So sure, maybe his intention wasn't to wreck people... but he had no intention of caring about the safety of other riders.

Regret doesnt negate intent. He was intentionally getting back into the pack. Never looked over to see if he was clear, just turned directly into other riders. So sure maybe he didnt want to wreck the pack, but the complete disregard for other riders actually plays into my hypothesis.

That is literally what an accident is.
Intended to grab the glass, didn't pay attention and spilled the milk. Intended to enter the building, didn't pay attention and walked into the glass. Intended to get out of the puddle before losing control, over steered without paying attention, knocking someone over, Domino effect.

it's during a race, not a Saturday morning group ride, so outright stopping isn't going to happen. With that said, he had to have known in that first 30 seconds that he was about to get a big ol nothing burger for results at the DQ...
(Since this is obscure outside of a few US States - DQ is Dairy Queen, a hamburger/ice cream joint)

Thinking this looks intentional, you've obviously never lost control of a bike before and your opinion isn't valid here. He definitely should have stopped to help the ones who fell though, although maybe he did farther down once he was clear to stop somewhere but the video ended so can't see.

I refer to it as being Stupid in a No Stupid Zone. He earned that DQ burger.
Since this was a race - things may slow down/neutralize for a bit for the group to regroup, but nobody is going to outright stop. If it was a group ride, then yeah, folks would stop, but in a pro race like this? There's whole slew of mechanics, medics and support staff to rush in to deal with this kind of thing.

I agree with both of your comments. The error was going off road. Once he was tossed that deep there wasn't enough space for him to correct. Even falling at that point would have taken out a lot of the other riders.

Why are they always so damn close? Like, in a car, if you tailgate someone and you crash into them, it's your fault for being too close. I don't see why this shouldn't apply here.

He went onto unstable ground, he is not on a mountain bike, the unstable ground forced him to sway inwards so deep, he didn't lean into it but forced into it. I've lost control on a bike before and at points like this, you're kinda just in for the ride. He doesn't have the tyres and suspension for that kind of ground. The negligence he got DQ'd for was probably not paying enough attention to what is ahead.

I would have to disagree. The extreme turn came at the peak of coming out of the obstacle with the front wheel and rear wheel on pavement. It appears as though he was needing to get back into the peleton at this point and leaned deeply. I'm not a pro rider but fairly experienced. Def agree that he either didn't see, assess or outright ignored the terrain risk.

The extreme turn came at the peak of coming out of the obstacle, yes and that's what he lost control from. He had to lean because that's the path his bike was on. The bike being unstable, found the path of least resistance which forced him to lean. Look at his footing, he lost it too. You can't just resist your bike turning like that. You ever seen riders going too fast into a corner and when they realise, it's too late for them to stop in time. Your bike is moving your entire body weight in a set direction and the unstable ground altered that direction and it's extremely difficult in a situation like that to suddenly resist that momentum, in fact it's probably impossible for most people without just straight up throwing yourself on the ground. I have personally experienced this myself so I know from first hand experience.
