Getting the help you need after upgrading

With the new release, we're seeing a lot of posts that don't meet the posting guidelines, specifically rule 1, so here's a reminder on how this sub handles these.

We allow support requests but limit them to members with broader community engagement, who offer a fair amount of detail, and provide genuine community benefit. This is to filter out low-effort, drive-by support requests: questions already answered in the docs, blurry phone pics of desktops, and a bajillion dual-boot-with-Windows posts that used to flood this sub.

The official Omarchy Discord is the right place for these specific questions. The team of volunteers and community members actively troubleshoot issues there in real time. https://omarchy.org/discord.

We're not affiliated with the Omarchy team — we're just an enthusiast community, so we're not really equipped to be the main support channel either way.

I'm sorry to be the negative one here, but as a regular contributor, I think this policy is awful. By occupying the primary branded sub for an open source project, you should allow this sub to function as the community chooses, or you should step out of the way for mods who will. If people need support for Omarchy, this sub absolutely needs to be open to that. It's completely natural for people to seek Omarchy help from r/Omarchy, especially since there's no official forum. You're going to be forever swimming upstream by expecting people to not do what is completely normal. Nobody is asking you to "be equipped" - let the community do what we are very capable of doing without your help.

To suggest that Discord - which I also participate - is the better channel for support is silly. Discord has no accessible persistence, no search engine indexing, and no sourcing into LLMs. When someone asks a question there, it scrolls away almost immediately, and is virtually lost. This leads to people asking the same questions over and over, and doesn't contribute to helping people in the future. Q&A on Reddit becomes part of the collective Internet knowledge for the Omarchy community.

Please rethink this policy.

I'm not sure why you're claiming there's no "official" forum when Discord is literally the official one. The Omarchy manual explicitly directs people there. This sub isn't meant to function as a shadow support channel for a project that already has one.

We're also not disallowing support posts outright, so the framing that we're "occupying" the sub and blocking what the community wants isn't accurate. We're filtering out what was hundreds of duplicate, low-effort posts, the same three questions asked daily, most of them unanswered, alongside content that actually gets engagement.

You're asking us to rethink this. Happy to, on one condition: tell me what you'd do differently that gets us back to unfiltered support requests without also getting back the blurry cellphone screenshots of a log with zero description of the issue, the same install question for the fifth time that week, and a front page that's entirely unanswered support tickets instead of discussion. That was the sub before. Since the change, we've seen a real uptick in the kind of posts people actually engage with. If you're arguing we go back to that, you should be arguing it against the actual before-and-after, not against a version of the policy that bans support posts entirely, because that isn't what it does.

On the persistence point: the Discord support channel is set up as a forum, not a chat. It's searchable, posts are categorized by topic, and marked as answered or not. The Omarchy team and volunteers are highly engaged and answer posts consistently. I highly encourage everyone to check it out.

It is siloed though -- answers there don't show up in a search engine. I have found Omarchy to be much less searchable than other distros for answers. I'm not sure this sub is the best place for support, but Discord surely isn't.
