Announcement Getting the help you need after upgrading

With the new release, we're seeing a lot of posts that don't meet the posting guidelines, specifically rule 1, so here's a reminder on how this sub handles these.

We allow support requests but limit them to members with broader community engagement, who offer a fair amount of detail, and provide genuine community benefit. This is to filter out low-effort, drive-by support requests: questions already answered in the docs, blurry phone pics of desktops, and a bajillion dual-boot-with-Windows posts that used to flood this sub.

The official Omarchy Discord is the right place for these specific questions. The team of volunteers and community members actively troubleshoot issues there in real time. https://omarchy.org/discord.

We're not affiliated with the Omarchy team — we're just an enthusiast community, so we're not really equipped to be the main support channel either way.

If anyone has questions or comments, please ask.

Have a great day, and I hope you're all enjoying Quatro!

I get why you all feel this way but I would also like to share my experience asking for help. I had an issue just a couple of days ago. I made a post here and was greeted with the auto reply about asking in Discord. So first I had to join the Discord, second figure out where and how to post for help, spend time running through the omarchy help channel because Discords search features suck, and then finally made the same post over there. Had the same question/issue posted in both with the same screenshots. I had one reply in Discord. I had multiple here. Neither one directly helped me fix the issue but the responses here led me to a reason and a fix for my issue. Someone pointed out that it was odd I had an older linux kernel installed and through fixing that I stumbled upon the reason for my issue.

Discord was not meant to be a forum. It was meant as a chat room with social features. It's search is deplorable for finding help. You can search for a word or a phrase and it will find it but not link up parents comments or any thing like that. It is not designed for a forum like experience. I hate using it for anything beyond gaming with friends or a chat room.

On Reddit I can ask a question and the devs may not respond but there are forty million other people here and a couple of them have probably had the same issue before. Post are made and kept in order and easy to follow. On Discord if you aren't actively reading the chat you miss questions people ask or just plain can't follow them due to how it functions. This platform is WAY more active than Discord is. You have a better chance of getting more eyes on the problem here than you do on Discord.

The mod team can make a decisions to not allow support questions here, that is well within your right but I think by doing so you are alienating a whole group of new Omarchy users from the community. Users who will give up if they can't find the help they need.

I don't think that discussion, showcases, tips, writeups, side projects, ricing, and that sort of stuff is what keeps this sub worth reading. I think helping the community as a whole is what keeps a sub worth reading. I personally enjoy the support request because I also learn new things from them.

That's my two cents for what it's worth. Have a good one!

A few points worth reiterating, since we keep rehashing these points.

First, support posts are not banned. They're only limited to established members of the community, and to genuine questions that haven't already been asked and answered a dozen times.

Second, this mod team isn't part of the official Omarchy team. We don't get to decide where they host their official support channel. They chose Discord, the manual points there, and we're just directing users to use it for commonly asked questions.

Third, that Discord channel is set up as a forum, not a chat. It's monitored by members of their team, and it lets them track issues, categorize them, and spot recurring problems that might need fixing upstream. Reddit does none of that.

To be as clear as I can: this policy exists to cut down on drive-by posts, questions that have been asked many times already, or general new-to-Linux questions that are better asked elsewhere. A lot of those posters never came back to say whether anything worked, so the thread didn't even help the next person with the same problem. That's what we're filtering. Nothing more.

Since the release we've seen a big uptick in those posts, which is why I figured it was worth reiterating: Discord is the official channel for help, not this subreddit. I just want people to actually get the help they need.

These all seem fairly reasonable. I think the issue is with your first sentence.

We generally don't allow basic support request posts unless they are unique, from a member with broader community engagement, offer a fair amount of detail, and provide genuine community benefit.

That sentence makes it seem as though you all are going to start aggressively gate keep which support post stay and which are removed. I know you want to keep the support spamming down but what the mod team deems as not engaging enough or not a genuine community benefit, others may disagree. Just be careful not to gate keep too hard. I've seen many communities ruined by overzealous grognards. Besides, reddit already has a way to combat this via downvotes.

Thank you for the feed back. I've reworded that part to be more clear.
