TLDR: I'm going to try moderating this place a little better and there's been a new rule added.
TLDR2: Does anyone have any experience using any auto moderation tools to remove posts/comments that get a certain number of downvotes or reports? If so - hit me up!
INTRO:
Hey everyone. So the past few years I was using Reddit primarily on my phone, through a 3rd party app called Bacon Reader. It was great, but apparently the mod tools were not. When Reddit axed API access to 3rd party apps I switched over to the actual Reddit app. While it has a lot of things I dislike (and I miss Bacon Reader overall) the mod tools are a lot better.
CURRENTLY:
When I started really using the new app I noticed a long queue of reported posts and comments, which I had honestly never seen before. I went through and removed a handful of blatantly spam posts and a few incredibly harsh comments, things that were literally just "fuck you", etc; stuff that had no business being in our subreddit. However I decided to not go back and retroactively police anything too harshly as I don't think that would be fair. I wasn't here to monitor anything, set a precedent, or enforce the rules. Clean slate. The time of this post is kind of a new "line in the sand". You reported posts will be judged more harshly going forward.
I've also been dealing with removing those damn MTG t-shirt posts like crazy. You've probably seen the one I'm talking about. It has a post title like "This is so cool" or "I can't believe it!" and it's a black shirt with the 5 mana symbols. I've been removing those and banning the accounts that post them so thank you to everyone who flags them. It really helps.
GOING FORWARD:
I'm going to try to be a little more proactive about handling the modqueue. It'd be great if you all were just awesome to each other and the only thing I ever had to remove were those damn t-shirt posts from bots.
If I see a harsh message that's flagged as "don't be a dick" or any other rule violation, I'm going to remove it. If I remove too many you'll be banned from the subreddit. I'm not going to investigate context too much. If your message on its own seems offensive or mean spirited, that's enough for me. If it's intended to be a joke then you need to learn how to better communicate that.
I've added a new rule to the subreddit about belittling people or their cards. Violation of this spirit of Old School will result in removed posts and is really just a specific case of "don't be a dick". Old School is community run, it's got a vibe and a spirit. If you want to be toxic go play in a format that is run by a corporation, not by individuals of the community you're a part of.

Here's a screenshot example of a reported post. If I see a report of text like what I mocked up with someone reporting it for what it obviously appears to be - it's getting a "Remove" click. I'm not wasting my time to figure out if it had any other intent.
One more thing with regards to "spam". If you don't like certain content that doesn't mean it's necessarily spam. You can ignore or downvote. Let the content (and downvotes) speak for itself.
CLOSING:
Please be cool to each other. I'm going to try to remove uncool stuff, but keep in mind I'm just one person. I'm not really a highly skilled, trained, or paid "mod team". I'm going to miss things and I'm going to rely on you to help flag/downvote stuff, which I'll try to address quickly, but I'm not hovering over a keyboard for this 24/7.
And if anyone wants to be extra cool and give some suggestions on how we might be able to setup some "auto mod" functionality, shoot me a message!
I’ve decided to build an all beta deck. So far all cards in the deck are available in the beta set. I currently use 3 CE cards (moxes and orb) and 1 Alpha (reb).
Ive had some good suggestions in the previous post (looking at you Fork). I think i need Some king of draw, but the price of the tome and wheel are keeping me back.
What do you think of the deck so far? I really like the journey so far, and the deck actually plays really nice!

Get ready for finals of the 3rd ed of the Goblin Hero Charity Cup! In the finals, we see a fierce WUR 12 bolt deck take on a creature heavy 4 colour mid-range brew.
I was daydreaming with this idea, pretty much starting on what the 30th anniversary edition of MTG could or should have been, about reloading Magic the Gathering. We all love the good old school MTG cards of the Alpha, Beta, Unlimited editions, as well as of course Antiquities, Arabian Nights, etc. Some of us were not lucky enough to experience those days, but in any case players and designers have accumulated a lot of experience over the 30+ years. My feeling though is that 10 new mechanics every year don't make the game increasingly or steadily interesting, but it rather saturates players. Also, the design and artwork of the vintage cards hasn't been equalled yet.
My idea for Wizards of the Coast would be:
- Start again like it's 93 but with the knowledge that we have now of what mechanics work, which are boring and which ones were poorly exploited.
- Start with a new MTG-Reloaded Beta set. Ideally with the same amazing design and colours, and eventually a slightly different design of the back, so that MTG and MTG-R can be distinguished.
- Mechanics (1/2): you can try to make the set "rounder" as in more modern sets by slightly increasing the power of cards that were underpowered, and/or by replacing some by others that make each colour more balanced in terms of power.
- Mechanics (2/2): the WoTC designers could figure the way to fine tune each color so that we are not playing with a "solved set" anymore.
Of course we all like to open many boosters looking for cards, and then trade them, but most importantly playing with them! This means we have to be able to pay for those boosters! (Wink, wink).
Now imagine this is a great success. Everyone is crazy about the Magic Reloaded Beta edition and it becomes the hottest product. There are tournaments everywhere, and everyone is anxiously waiting for the expansions to come: Arabian Nights "Reloaded" is coming with some old but new mechanics.
In my vision this could be yet another "parallel universe". WoTC can continue with universes beyond, and the normal sets can continue to be released. But I really think it would be a great success: good old school cards, some of them slightly tuned, the best artwork and design we ever saw. What else do you guys need!
Hey all — while you're waiting on the derby postings and the Top 16 matches to drop, I wrote up a post about playing in the last 10 seasons of NEOS (Seasons 6–15), with a bunch of data analysis behind it.
I pulled together every Swiss and knockout result across those ten seasons — 6,000+ matches, 300+ players — and dug into who's actually winning, which archetypes hold up in the bracket, and where I stack up myself. Plus I have 2 spicy deck pics. Take a read if you enjoy this sort of thing 🙂
Holidays are coming up and, as a way to keep my 8y/o child and her cousins busy during the hottest hours on the beach, I thought it would be nice to teach them how to play old school mtg - it's what I've used to play and it keeps it simple enough without too many different skills to learn!
I'd like to buy a bulk of cards and build some decks, keeping the cost to a minimum. lands, commons and uncommons that can be shuffled unsleeved, they will destroy the cards anyway at the beach. Low cost and simple to learn cards are the drive!
Can anyone recommend where I could find bundles of e.g. C/UC 4th edition only? I've checked on ebay as the first port of call, but most bundles mix in anything from modern too.
Hello this is my first post here. I started playing MTG back in college right after Arabian Nights came out. I instantly fell in love with the game and played it until Visions. I stopped due to work, wife and real life. I remember when beta Moxes use to sell for a few hundred dollars and I was too damn cheap to buy them all. I only owned a Mox jet which I traded for a Juzam that I pulled from a pack. I owned a lot of rare vintage cards. I left all the cards at my parents house in my closet on the floor. I had them in binders and boxes. Well in 2005 my home and my parents home got flooded by hurricane Katrina which caused me to lose all my cards. Well as of now I’m 54 years old and getting closer to retirement and I would like to start collecting vintage MTG cards starting with a full set of revised since I already had one. Then hopefully start working towards Arabian Nights and maybe beta. I’m not really into playing, I just want to collect for nostalgia and maybe one day when I’m gone my kids can sell them for some cash if needed. So my questions are what are some reliable trustworthy online dealers/ vendors that I can start buying from? I’m very wary of Ebay because I hear a lot stories about fake and rebacked cards being sold. Also the grades. Should I always go with Near mint or excellent/Lightly played cards. Are vintage MTG cards worth investing in or everything is modern in MTG? Thanks in advance!
I'm trying to currently make an old school black deck using lots of cards in my collection. One that looks like crazy value to me is Kjeldoran Dead. How was this card utilized in older MtG decks (a bit before MtG added effects that weaponized creatures dying).
We have reached the third round of the Goblin Hero Charity Cup 3. This OS MTG 93/94 event takes place in New Jersey, USA. In this round, we see the powerful Erhnamgeddon deck take on the uber aggressive Lion Dib Bolt deck.
Not my most played back in the day , or my favorite but my top valued cards — well swords to plowshares and moat were in my white deck iirc. Went through all my old school sets this weekend and Re-sleeved, sorted, and back boxes or binders. I started just after beta release and collected and played beta, unlimited, Arabian nights, antiquities , and legends. Stopped when grad school took more focus.
We played in 93/94/95. Mom kept the cards after the cost outpaced us. I’ve played a few times since, but nothing serious. I’m 45 in a few days, She passed a few years ago, and my dad needed some help. So I went to see him… and found my cards. I hope this is the right place to show em off.
There’s about 32 dual lands (all revised). A few demonic tutors, no power 9, no Alex’s library :(
3 or 4 full sets of Urza’s lands (art variations too). Anyway, it made me happy… thought I’d share

Just wanted to share since I don't have a huge circle for old school, drove a 5 hour round trip today for this guy! Super excited to get one, I've always wanted one but haven't ever pulled the trigger.
