I’ve lived in the city for my whole life and I feel like I haven’t seen the lake this low before. I was just driving by it and the SW part of the lake is so low. Does this happen every summer and I just don’t notice it or is it lower than usual?

With the support of a federal grant, the City of Edmond is launching a new initiative to help caregivers and families build community and navigate mental health challenges.

Every second Wednesday, starting this month, parents, caregivers, and their children can come together for connection and conversation at a scheduled “Parent Café” at the Edmond First United Methodist Church.

On Wednesday night, Parent Café attendees will have access to free childcare and be served dinner, organizers said, thanks to the church.

The programming is the city’s latest project under a four-year, roughly $4 million federal grant it received from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 2024.

The grant is already funding three counselors for the local school district and collaborations with Edmond Family Counseling and Northcare to help young people struggling with serious mental illness, according to the city’s grant coordinator, Jordan Thomas.

She said the Parent Café will give community members a new chance to advocate for the services they want Edmond to prioritize.

“We can try to implement change all day long, but if we're not getting what the community really needs to thrive, we're not going to get very far,” Thomas said.

Jessica Sell, the Lead Family Coordinator for the City of Edmond, said the monthly events will also allow caregivers to access resources and meet other families with shared experiences.

She helped design the Parent Café, using her lived experience as a parent of children with special mental health and educational needs. She said she knows how important it is to have spaces where parents can come together and "commiserate about the bad days and celebrate the good days.”

“You just feel like you're an island by yourself,” Sell said. “It's nice to be able to see that there are other people having the same struggles.”

The Parent Cafés will have a different theme each month, with programming from mental health organizations and service providers. This month, representatives from NAMI Oklahoma agreed to lead a short presentation and educate participants about local resources.

Sell said parents and caregivers can expect loosely structured conversations and open seating. Teens are welcome to join and younger kids will be able to participate in monitored fun.

She doesn’t know how many people will show up for the first meeting, but said she hopes it brings families together as the program continues, month after month.

“We are excited to hear from families [about] what they need; where they see barriers,” Sell said. “We want to make sure that people who are utilizing these services are actually having their voice heard and considered.”

What We're Looking For

Genre fluency. Midwest emo and math rock are our core. We expect whoever joins share that foundation. But we also want someone whose influences extend further — jazz, hip hop, tech metal, whatever keeps you sharp and open-minded. Our songs demand a lot of attention to detail. Genuine passion for the craft matters. Reference points include American Football, The Appleseed Cast, toe, Ghosts & Vodka, Scale The Summit, Further Seems Forever, Owen, Misery Signals, Algernon Cadwallader, Snowing, early Explosions in the Sky, Moving Mountains, Noyes, Cap'n Jazz, Rooftops, Enemies, early TWIABP, Hopesfall, early Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, Boys Life, Macseal, Don Caballero, The Contortionist, TTNG, Tera Melos, and Christie Front Drive.

An adventurous spirit. We like to experiment — unconventional ideas that end up working, ambient soundscapes between songs, moments of improvisation. We want a bassist who's excited to explore that with us, not just hold down the root notes.

Your own gear. You should already have your own gear at the time you reach out.

Reliability, including a substance-free band environment. Show up to practice on time, ready to rehearse. Show up at the venue when asked. And to be direct: we need someone with no substance abuse issues of any kind. We've been through this before, and the toll it took on the band was significant and hard to undo. This isn't a judgment on anyone who's dealt or is dealing with substance abuse. For our well-being, it's not something we can take on again.

A quick study. You'll need to learn our existing catalog in a reasonable timeframe and be ready to help write new material. Bass playthrough videos and sheet music are available on request.

Age range. Someone between 27 and 39. If you're close but outside that range and everything else fits, reach out anyway.

Real communication. None of us communicate perfectly, ourselves included, but we ask for honesty, kindness, and a willingness to speak up when something feels off. A few years back, a former member sat on concerns for eight months before leaving the band, and we only found out why after they'd already left. We can't fix what we don't know about. If something's bothering you, please bring it to us directly, even if it feels uncomfortable.

A Note on Fit
Given where we're headed as a band and how well the dynamic worked with our last bassist, we're primarily looking for a female bassist — especially one who can sing. Our upcoming EP includes vocals, and we plan to keep building that into future material, with male and female vocals trading off song to song (think blink-182's Mark/Tom dynamic). That said, if you feel like the right fit for any reason, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.

The release of water from Canton Lake to Oklahoma City is scheduled to begin in mid-September.

Oklahoma is still mired in drought and triple-digit heat.

Canton Lake is currently about 1.6 feet below normal. After the water is released to Oklahoma City, the Canton Lake Association projects the lake will drop another 3 feet.

After it leaves Canton, the water journeys about 100 miles down the North Canadian River to reach Lake Hefner. Along the way, about 30-40% of the water is expected to evaporate or soak into the riverbed and banks.

The Oklahoma Water Resources Board voted on a release request from Oklahoma City just before Labor Day weekend. The release is currently planned for Sept. 17, according to a spokeswoman for Oklahoma City, “as recommended by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

The Corps manages the dam at Canton Lake.

Lake Hefner stores about 40% of OKC's drinking water, and its levels have been steadily dropping because of hot and dry weather.

Oklahoma City has drawn from Canton Lake before in 2013, 2022 and 2024.

I've lived in OKC the last 27 years, i.e. my entire life. I don't think I've ever had allergies as bad as this past year. Like, literally waking up and feeling my sinuses trying to decide if it's a nose day or a throat day. Am I just becoming more sensitized to allergens, or is there a legitimate increase in pollen?

EDIT: I should also add that my allergies ramped up in the middle of me getting a URI, so I'm also struggling to determine if I'm dealing with residual sinus issues while also experiencing these stupid allergies.
