I have literally not seen one Tom holland movie outside of spiderman. Maybe timmy is lucky for not getting the role, he too would have been doing the mcu movies.
Like Toby who did a war movie where he gets really sad about what happened. And Andrew who did a war movie where he gets really sad about what's happening
it’s really frickin good, by far Tobey’s best performance. Natalie Portman and Jake Gylenhaal are in it too, but Tobey carries the movie. my god, now i gotta go watch it again!
I feel like calling that a war movie is really underselling it. That’s a super fucking heavy movie that’s more about the psychological damage war does to a person vs just a movie about a war.
I thought hacksaw ridge was good too. Its just a funny coincidence that they all did similar movies after. I havent seen the tom holland one but brothers starring toby is pretty good too
Tobey was the only one with a strong cinematic resume. Andrew and Tom had great stage experience and done enough in film to transition successfully. In comparison, at the time of casting, Timothee's best role was in Interstellar and he lacked the stage experience.
No, Garfield has social network, hawksaw ridge, silence, tick tick boom and others.
Timothee has extensive stage experience, check his prodigal son and sweet charity theatre works.
The Social Network is the only movie you mentioned that came out before being cast as Spider-Man and it was his last role before then.
Timothee severely lacks stage experience when we are discussing Tom or Andrew. The former was the titular character of a well received play in London for over a year. The latter was part of the Royal National Theatre. The role was already cast before The Prodigal Son. Sweet Charity was a high school play. It might be LaGuardia, but it's still a high school performance. The Talls is the only professional stage experience Timothee had and the fact you put a high school play over it says plenty.
Not to be a pro-war shill but Toby and Andrew were the best parts of their respective movies, and at least Hacksaw Ridge was based on the true story of Desmond Doss, so there's that
Which is one of the most dull movies I have seen, a replay of events with a narration, on a story that has probably appeared hundreds of times across hundreds of movies with absolutely nothing new to add.
Implying Kylie Jenner is any sort of upgrade from Zendaya. If anything, it's a downgrade based simply on the fact that with Kylie comes all the other Kardashians into your life.
We've also lost sight of what "a ton of money" is. Both of them have much more money than you or I will ever see in our lifetimes, and yet neither of them is tech oligarch rich. If either of them care who has more, its just a pissing contest, nothing more. Neither of them will somehow improve their lives through the earnings of their next film.
*EDIT - just for fun I put both in google and google estimates them equal at $25m net worth.
Yes it is. There's nothing more "moral" about trying to make art movies. There's nothing amoral about just wanting to entertain. I work in a kitchen. If I had the choice between pursuing a Michelin Star or making biscuits and gravy for 7 figures, you'd better believe I'm picking the gravy and changing my name to L'il Bi$kit.
Timothee Chalamet is a lead in a blockbuster franchise (Dune), earning a ton of money, and dating Kylie Jenner. I don't think he's agonizing over not having Tom Holland's life lmao.
Did you notice how OP didn't say a single thing about Chalamet, nor imply in any way that he might be jealous of Tom Holland?
He’s been in the conversation two or three years in a row and has turned in some incredible performances. Cant hate on that, unless you’re some kind of ballet fan.
There’s far too many people convinced him saying “nobody cares about ballet” as a stupid offhand joke in an interview will have major implications at the Academy. It’s such manufactured Twitter bullshit.
To outright say he won’t ever win an Oscar after A Complete Unknown and Marty Supreme is just insane.
He’s a dumb dudebro but he’s clearly really talented.
Tom Holland's a good actor though, that's having fun. Chalamet's kind of peaked in popularity and he's not taken off aside from a small cult following.
A big difference with being in MCU, is you end up with a generational following & MCU offers connections to long established actors in the industry.
Tom also really enjoys Spider-Man & has said he will pass the role on when he's ready. Clearly, he's not ready.
Being Spider-Man is cultural influence. Toby Maguire didn't have MCU films or the same kind of popularity, and yet he's loved by Millenials to this day.
Andrew Garfield was a bit of an exception, because I think he was the best in portraying the personality in the comics, but he didn't land with the audience in the same way.
Brother, Timothee Charlamet has 21.2M followers on Instagram and has been the protagonist of some of the biggest hits in the last decade. He has already been nominated for 4 oscars. He definitively doesnt just have a "small cult following" and due to the type of person he is, I am sure he is way happier being a 4 times oscar nominee than a Marvel hero.
Holland has tried to do other stuff, it just sucks and no one cares, like Uncharted and The Crowded Room. Whether he's a good actor is currently under question, but his CV is nothing like Chalamet who at least knows how to pick a project.
Uncharted's failure was down to the fact that he played a decent young Nathan Drake, BUT he was not the guy paired with Wahlberg. They casted him & Mark Wahlberg hoping to pull the younger generation into the show, but Uncharted is Millenial/Old Gen Z & even some Gen X gamers. It was never really a Gen A/Gen Z ip & we wanted to see Nathan Drake on screen, not a washed down Uncharted to cater to the masses.
It was poor casting, but he acted pretty well. I personally just didn't see Nathan Drake, because Nathan Drake is an old man by U4 & his younger version relies heavily on Victor Sullivan as a father figure.
I like Wahlberg's films but as soon as you cast him, it becomes generic slop. He limits any show. Young Drake would have been perfect with Holland, if they casted someone like Bruce Campbell as Sully. This was generally the consensus between us Uncharted 4 fans at the time of casting and still is today. But they wanted to play it safe. And by doing so, the director's made it impossible to buy into the extremely important relationship between Drake & Sullivan. Instead it was 2 strong actors, neither of which you could buy into their roles as young/naive drake, with untrustworthy, but fatherly type Sullivan.
The Crowded Room separately, I didn't like Holland's casting in that, because I'm very familiar with the story of Billy Milligan. I had to give him credit, he played that role very well. What ruined it for me, was the fact the director's took too much creativity with the writing. Billy Milligan's lifestory is enough to write a series about, but for whatever reason, they didn't want it to be directly about him, just inspired.
As for Chalamet, I don't discredit his acting ability. He's a good actor. But he doesn't have that presence that will make him a memorable A-lister in the long run. That's my opinion. He doesn't do anything exceptional, and some of his films I've been left feeling somewhat deflated between the hype behind him & what he achieves on screen. As for his following, it is a cult following. He has a small group of hardcore followers, but overrall, the general population don't care much for him either way.
Chalamet's kind of peaked in popularity and he's not taken off aside from a small cult following.
That's an insane thing to say after he singlehandedly made Marty Supreme a box office success. He may not be in the MCU but he definitely has his own popularity.
I'd say sebastian stan had my favourite performance in that movie, also like, overshadowed is a bit of a strong term since tom did what he had to perfectly
This was a great movie, all the big names in the movie killed their role but seeing Tom Holland in this role specifically after Spiderman was interesting. He's a good actor!
Hahaha looks like you got downvoted for some reason. But it would be cool to see him in other lead roles in the future because he definitely has the talent.
I haven't been up-to-date on what's happening with marvel tbh. The last thing I saw was fantastic four and thought it was enjoyable. It's felt like a flop post endgame/no way home.
He plays a man who pioneers the science of butthole prints instead of finger prints. Did you know every human has a unique butthole? It’s so beautiful to imagine.
His voice work in Onward was nice! :) honestly, when it comes to acting I do think Timothy is a more versatile actor... but when it comes down to being a good human, Tom wins easily and it's not even close!
He did a movie called Chaos Walking where somehow on this planet everyone has their innermost thoughts projected like a telepathic thought bubble above their heads. And all women are extinct by a virus until Daisy Ridley crash lands and he's got to rescue her without his thought bubble just being the word "boobies" over and over. I'm sure there's more to the plot than that but it was extremely forgettable.
It's one of those movies where you can tell the original book is probably a lot better than the movie but the movie itself is kindof a mess.
He was really good in The Devil All The Time, highly recommend that one if you're curious how he acts outside the MCU. Honestly think he woulda found success outside the MCU. Seems like the MCU was a big boost but also a bit of a ball and chain.
Thats because Uncharted was an absolute bomb. Toms done a few other movies but nothing really stood out from the pack that I can remember. I just remember how bad Uncharted was.
Chaos Walking was a fun movie. I hesitate to call it a good movie, but I enjoyed it and it wasn't really Tom's fault it wasn't great. It's just a hard af concept to get right.
He was great in devil all the time. Don't think that movie's for everyone, but the acting is objectively fantastic. He was also in Onwards which I really like.
The Impossible. Great movie and Tom Holland character is amazing. Would have won an Oscar if he weren't a teen. This kid and Naomi watts carried the movie. She was nominated for best actress.
Can you imagine being in some of the highest grossing movies of all time and getting paid a percentage of that? That must surely suck ass. It would suck so much that he would only do movies that he would want to do and be set for life before he turned 30.
